Much respect for May for doing all of her homework, you found a real gem in her, it's rare for us car loving guys to find a partner who shares and supports our passion, I mean she even wore red for the occasion.
Interesting lol @@joz1751
Sam the plywood under the F cars were basically the skid plates because of how much they would bottom out. It was cheaper and it helped with the rigidity of the shell and chassis.
FIA also only allowed it to be a certain thickness of plywood
F1 still uses it
They are also favored even today, because as @DISNUM said, they are a specific thickness and by checking the thickness after a race, it's possible to see if the car's ground effect caused the car to sit lower than it was allowed according to the rules.
Controlled reduction limit. If you scraped to much would get penalties.
@africanotaku5453 They don't use Wood anymore. Its a different material today, with a bit of titanium at the bottom so the cars spark, when they bottom out.
The ae92 Corolla is the most underrated car there. Glad that car is still in their archive.
Thank you Mei for getting us all that information . Made the tour that much better. Great job learning about all the cars.
As a long time Yokohama fan, seeing the historical Advan race cars is absolutely amazing! I'm really into '80s cars, so I gotta go with the #24 F2000 car as my favorite.
23:20
TL;DR: PENNZOIL, Martini, Rothmans, John Player Special, Marlboro, RENOWN and I liked the Supra and Chaser most!
In terms of JGTC, the black and yellow 'PENNZOIL' livery is also legendary. 2 other examples are the 'Martini' liveries, best known for sponsoring Lancia in Group B and also 'Rothmans' who sponsored Porsche in every kind of motorsport in the 80's. Also iconic was 'John Player Special' sponsoring the Lotus F1 Team in the beautiful black with golden outlines and another F1 related one is McLaren being sponsored by 'Marlboro' in red and white. There also is the green-orange Mazda 787B livery by 'RENOWN' but that is more of a niche livery. A modern day example would be the liveries from 'Falken Tires' in my opinion.
My favourite car definitely was the Supra as I'm an absolute sucker for JGTC/GT500 cars, but I also lile touring cars a lot and the Chaser was very clean.
Maybe throw a Toyota Castrol rally livery in there too. And don't forget the Subaru 555!
@@michaelrowse4217 Oh absolutely! The Castrol liveries I definitely should've mentioned. Subaru 555 is also a bit more of a niche livery I feel.
And gulf oil
Sam, they still use wood today under the F1 cars (just a strip). They measure their wear after a race so they can tell if they have too much downforce, there is a limit to the wear depths of the wood. Supercars and hyper cars today have wood on some of them to help with the scrapping, it is a special laminated wood and resin. So that wood is original on the cars.
18:24 These Buttons and the blue knob are for the car Electrics. Knob is for Electric Power Steering adjust (EPS Effect) so you can select how hard it is to turn the wheel . WIP is for wiper. The FP Buttons are for Fuel pumps (1-5). HL and TL are for headlight and taillight.
Hey Sammit and May! Just by the thumbnail I know this is going to be good! Thankyou for all the content this year and Merry Christmas to you guys, Yugo, Daiki and all the gang!
Inside the Advan supra with all of the interior switches and panel items you were looking at, those are lifter fuses. So you'd lift them and it's as if you've removed the fuse or vise versa. FP1 would be fuel pump 1 for instance. You'd do this to build oil pressure without starting the engine.
omg sooo cool to see history being preserved considering all the abandon cars that seems to be the norm in the japan. The storage racking is soooo scketchy.nice day out with the wife..
Yes, need more race car content! Great content as always Sam 👍
The electric car is a Tesla based on a Lotus Elise.
And the colours on F1 tyres "usually" tell you what compound teams are running (hard, medium, soft, etc)
Awesome to see the old race cars. Definitely a highlight for me was seeing the old AE101.
I believe F1 cars today still use a length of wood underneath as a skid plate, the sparks usually come from metal bricks that are mounted underneath.
So many cars in the that reminded me of Gran Turismo 1 & 2 ❤
Great content. Really cool to see those cars. Wifey kicked some ass in this video. Her little tidbits of information really brought it to life.
Thank you very much for showing that collection of cars guys, you do a great job. Congratulations on the sponsorship, well deserved.
Like others mentioned. Even in current F1 they use Jabroc skid blocks on the underside of the cars.
Love this type of video its awesome to see these old cars from my childhood being looked after and kept so that future generations can see just how far cars and racing have come over the yrs out of the all id have to go with the corolla touring car purely because back in the day playing toca touring cars was either the corolla or the trx pintara as my car of choice
Thanks for sharing the visit to see these cars. As to iconic liveries, First one I thought of was Marboro as I was a fan of mortorcycle racing back in the 80's. Kenny Roberts was riding on Marboro Sponsored bikes. Simple design but easy to spot your rider in a crowd of bikes. They were sponsors on a lot of motorsports back then. Rothmans and Gulf are a couple others that have stood the test of time. My favorite car was the Supra.
such a great video guys. thank you for sharing this amazing history with us!
The wood is called Jabroc and has been in use in racing since early 1990's because it's cheap, light, and durable.
Secret stuff. Great to see ya back home and chilling with May. May you are becoming a Japanese Motoring expert. Advan Red. 👊 You bring so much background about Japanese culture and cars. Sam, Mark Weber, like yourself, are too tall and wide for F1. F1 drivers are now jockeys. 👊 Baka Sugoi. Your neighbour is a jealous Karen. My neighbours here in Australia luv my Skyline and always wave. Hi. Keep up living your life. Arigato Aussie, bro 🙏🇦🇺🇯🇵
The Gulf liveries are pretty iconic. Zeal had some =good ones over the years, Tech Arts for the OEM+..
Those Gulf liveries are absolute classics
To me, there is no other iconic livery that sticks out in my mind like the beginning days of RS-R (RS-R ICHIBAN!!☝️)
I was 20 years younger watching Manabu "Max" Orido and Alex Pfeifer back then in their RS-R sport service cars smoking the whole track. The Team Orange livery was one that I can remember only because I have the same car that Nobushige Kumakubo drove (GD chassis STi).
Awesome video as always Sammit. This was a awesome look into racing history. Keep up the great work saving all the history you can.
This has been super exciting to view inside Advan! 🔥 Sam...thankyou very much! I ALWAYS appreciate these inside/tours of legend's 👍 I'm so happy you shared this with us 😊 also May... your racing history knowledge throughout this vid and others is just amazing!! Thankyou guys ❤
The man himself Dori Drift King use to do a lot of touring car racing. He competed JTCC ( Japanese Touring Car Championship ) for 2yrs in the Toyota Chaser. There's one raced that he didn't compete in Group A in AE86's in the 80's. Now he brought back Group A racing series to the race car scene because there's a lot of AE86 enthuse out there in Japan competing numerous competition D1 Grand prix, GT300 series and time attack. I don't know how. Keiichi still races Group A, GT500, GT300, Time Attack and Touge battle for Hot Version videos. That's how far I did my research. There's video on CZcams of him he did a documentary about him all of his racing career in decades.
Definitely my favorite was the Supra! Which is my favorite one of all JDMs other than the GTR! The plywood was and still is used on cars today as a replaceable layer to protect the body from damage from being so low to the ground. Idk that it’s used in any F1 cars but I see it on a lot of grip cars with GT3 kits on them! Just cheaper to replace than carbon fiber.
Plywood under the cars is a skid plate to messure if they ride to low, Can’t be below a certain mm after the race. Still use this today on F1 cars, not plywood anymore tho :D
Hey, Sammit, just a little note about the F series cars on the top.
The Super Formula championship started off as the Japanese F2000 Championship and then it became the Japanese F2 Championship from 1978 until 1986.
Then from 1987-1995, it became the Japanese F3000 championship. 1996-2012 saw the series become Formula Nippon. And 2013-now is Super Formula.
It is worth noting that closed wheeled car next to Kenji Takahashi’s car had a Formula 2 chassis underneath all that bodywork
That electric panel with the aircraft style circuits breakers is pretty cool! Played with military aircraft and those are on them. Good video today!
Crochet sweaters are the best thing ever, btw. That sweater is 10/10 May.
Another iconic livery is definitely the FalkenTyres liveries. Cool to see the Advan cars👌🏻
That system you mentioned Sam is Circuit Breakers, they pop up when tripped and can be pushed back in to reset..
🎉 big Ups to me, for doing her homework and helping you out definitely the Mark 4 supra where Japanese cars go to die love supras that’s the first video that made me start watching your channel and subscribed keep it up
I have ADHD and watching racing calms me down. I can hyper focus on it, I love F1 and touring cars. And I do drifting
"I wore red today because I knew we were coming to Advan!"....*shoulder shrugs like a boss! BOOM!!!!!
This is such a sweet collection, great vid as always sam. I believe they still use a composite wood and ti pucks under new f1 cars
This was SO EPIC :D
Can we get a follow up visit to advan please and thank you. All the series i would sit and watch for yourself. So much amazing racing.
What an awesome look into Japanese racing history! Awesome access here Sammit and thanks to Mei for the history on these vehicles.
Its 5am in the morning. Thanks for the video. Sickkkk!!!!
that is an awesome tour , thank you Sam and May
Denso Sarde supra or the castrol supra are legit iconic livery from the era, on par with calsonic skyline
Amazing! I worked at a garage doing east to west imports in the mid 90s and the cars they where importing, Del Sol, R33, Mx5, Mr2 turbos, lancer evo IV and more, all had race exhaust and top rated suspension upgrades, and this was several years before the fast and furious, its like Japan had all those dream world cars a decade before anyone outside Japan knew of it, amazing absolutely
I’m like 95% sure that electric car at (14:15) is an OG Tesla Roadster
The JGTC Tom's Supra with the Castrol livery is iconic too, along side with JGTC Pennzoil Skyline R34
Jun super lemon livery as probs one of the most iconic for me, the renown 787b, and top secret all had dope livery from back in the day.
One of the most iconic livery I can remember is the Mazda 787B, with its 4 rotary monster engine. Mazda still has a full functioning prototype car at their disposal. If I was you, I’d go check it out. The engine noises it makes is pure ecstasy!
Gulf Livery and the John Player Special are so iconic.
Dang, Mei studied up on these cars and drivers! That's dedication for you!
The livery of the F1 when my idol Airton Senna race.... The McLaren Honda, white and red.. That marks an era
The plywood was used as an expandable piece, cheap and easy to replace as the cars were so low they would make contact with the track constantly and in the center consul of the Toyota supra those are all fuses, easily accessible for quick maintenance
It would be cool if you do a review on the mc8r because there is only I think one still on the streets of Japan.
my wifi paused while Sam had his eyes closed (looking goofy lol) but, the way she was looking at him .... I want that. Best Wishes
Mae is so cool knowing all of the Advan history!
I love this and the fact that you were able to do this. Also, May researching and remembering the history of all of these cars and the series that they're in is amazing. My favorite cars are the 2000cc car, Chaser, and MKIV Supra. And in that order
The Chaser badges on the roof would be a sneaky way of making vortex generators for the rear wing very naughty but genius 🤫👍🏻
Falken Livery and Castrol Livery. Also the R34 Penzoil livery are one of the iconic ones.
Martini racing Gulf the simple but elegant Marlboro livery was always a favorite of mine too
Falken teal/blue livery is iconic too, as is pinkstyle and Subaru 555 in their respective competitions
The rainx livery from the old trans am days here in the states was cool too. Different cultures but still relevant.
Just gotta say thankyou for all your hard work Sam and May. Appreciate you guys so much
Castrol Supra, the 555 impreza, and 787b have iconic liveries
ae92, the sole reason why im buildin a hatch ae91 fxgt, fitted with a 20v 4age
Overtake! (オーバーテイク!) the anime that recently came out is a good intro to formula car racing and a solid show overall.
That is SO cool, i love seeing car history like this. AWESOME VIDEO SAM :)
For me the Martini and HKS livery are really Iconic.❤ Great look inside of Japans Racing History.👍
For me the Falken livery is at least as famous as the others mentioned.
Praying to the Lord I find a lady like Mei. 😂 Amazing content Sam as always. Feels good that you include us to your adventures to such exclusive and engulf us in such rich automotive history especially for people like me that live across the world and do not have access to such gems.
I miss the car auction videos , by far my favorite content
Cool to see all the Advan cars!
Honda guys including myself will always mention the Spoon, J's Racing, JUN, and Mugen liveries. Also don't forget the Pennzoil GT-Rs and Castrol Supra.
So epic! I could see why you flew home early. Those cars are some serous history!
I got some Advan tires on my S14 right now lol :) Great video love videos like this! the Supra was great i wish you would have gone into the R35 that was there also.
That chaser under the rack looks so good, maybe i should do my gs300 in that livery
Plywood was the carbon fibre of the day. They still use it for the splitters in the British touring car championship.
thank you for all the knowledge May!
That little Honda is like a del sol!!!!!
Toms Castrol Toyota livery comes to my mind as also iconic!
I heard that people use wood for undercarriages protection. It’s supposed to be easier and cheaper to replay once scratched and damaged. Wood is hard to care about over plastic molds and carbon or metal.
Fav car has to be the 91 Toyota Levin.. had 1 but a coupe version RZ 1.8L red top, bigger cams, some chinese turbo setup with a screamer and phoenix wastegate with a Phoenix frontmount and rad, 6 speed gearbox from the gt four celica, 15 inch enkei's and it ripped for what it was back in the day
Pennzoil Nissan R 33, 34(2000)JGTC, Pennzoil Zexel R 34 (2001)JGTC, Raybrig NSX JGTC , Castrol Supra (99,00,01)JGTC, Takata NSX 03 JGTC these are my favorites. Some of them i have as die cast models.
18:24 is the old style glass cartridge fuses and fuse panel. Circuit Breakers or interrupters weren’t really in cars then except maybe F1 and other big money series. This was nearly pre-onboard computers so all the electricals are basically analog/discrete circuits.
Old supra was my fave and I think and talking iconic I always revert to the iconic spoon livery
Damn nice to see some of the iconic hero car even tho idk much about this but still cool to see this type of car 😊😊😊
they used the wood underneath because it was cheap to replace. fun fact they still use wood planks in f1 today but its to make sure the cars arent too low for regulations, and they use wood on the bottom of gt3 etc cars from splitters etc because again damaging the wood is cheaper than damaging the carbon parts.
May did an awesome job good job May
Much love from California sammit
Uh.... Sounds like Sam ain't putting in work!!!!!!!! Hahahha.... May was dropping the clues..... Glad y'all are safe, looking forward to what you two have in store for us in 2025. Godspeed.
Sick tour history got some car gems
Sam they use wood in todays F1 cars , they are a wear plank. They know the thickness of the wood and can tell if the car is riding to low. FIA use this to regulate car ride hight under full downforce loads and conditions.
Kudos to May 💯
Any of NSX from that era was awesome 👌🏾
This is amazing..what a treat, thank you for sharing this.
The wood panels underneath the formula car or actually all track cars even todays F1 have wood panel underneath the car as skid plate when for bumps the track...
On all areas under a racecar that is low enough that risk touching the track have wood panels..
Now Why is that you might wonder...
Well wood is way cheaper to replace than for example aluminium that also can bend and buckle etc so they cover those areas with wood panels...
Carbon-or-glass-fiber crack with to hard contact with surface and scratching up and that is dangerous and very expensive to replace..
Hence they cover the under boddy where risk of contact with track surface with wood panels..
Even modern supercars like lambo, ferrari etc. have wood panel choice under and under the front lip as extra choice when buying the car,
to protect the carbon fiber because wood panel is cheaper and easier to replace than the carbon fiber.
Thanks again for this trip down memory lane..
Keep up the awesomeness CHEERS!
Oh also the PIAA accord was super sick.
I'd say about livery's one that stands out to me is tomika with the crazy JGTC r30 rs such a legend and why I want a r30 iron mask
Dude you so need to put air jacks on your car. It would be the perfect project to undertake in the off season. Treat yourself to that ease and convenience you deserve it!.
Very cool video. If im not mistaken. The plywood is still used in the bottom of race cars today.
I have a soft spot for the Lotus John Player Special livery. It's simple, just Black and Gold.
The wood under the car is there for "skid" protection. Dont know if they use it today. But I know for sure that you dont need to go many years back and they where still using good old regular wood.
May is the a goat at retaining history 🔥
