I love the fact that even though Page is wasted out of his mind, he's still coherent enough to roll his eyes at Plant's smarmy, "of course I am in the 80s and I have my own career."
Poor JPJ. He was the only normal one in the band, and never got the attention he deserved. He is the only surviving member of the group to not be honored by the Queen, and they just left him out of all of that Page/Plant stuff in the 1990s. Jimmy Page, wow, so messed up that he can hardly put a coherent sentence together. Phil wasn't even the primary Drummer for the set, and he never was much good at playing anyway. He needs a lead drummer up there with him, and he cuts in and out.
I hate how he is so overlooked. He was such an intricate part of LZ. Everyone knows all about Plant and Page, and even Bonzo, but I think because JPJ wasn’t as flamboyant as Plant and Page, he was overlooked. Zep would not be Zep without JPJ or any of them.
The interviewer is an idiot for not acknowledging Jones... John Paul Jone's legacy just grows bigger and bigger over time, as more people come to recognize that no rock bassist has ever been able to match his creative and always soulful musicality. Just listen to "In My Time Of Dying" from the Earls Court concert!
That "yahoo" is Paul Martinez. He played with them onstage that day. He was RP's bass player for the RP's first couple solo records. A fabulous musician and very nice guy.
I think all of them were important to the success of Led Zeppelin. What I love about Led Zeppelin is how they resembled the Beatles member wise. I was reading an article the other day from a pyschologist who claims that all successful groups show the four cornerstones of the personality groups. I think the aricle was "We are all John, Paul, George and Ringo"
Thanks for posting this. Been looking for this interview for a while. After I divorced in '91 my ex-wife took all my Zeppelin VHS tapes. And of course the Live Aid DVD didn't have any of this. Love Plant in this one.!
The questions of whether Bonham was 'better' than Phil is non-factor than the statement that J. Bonham was part of the magic that made Led Zeppelin the Greatest in History. For Led Zeppelin as a whole, Jon was the best drummer in the world.
Phil didn't turn Page's fingers to jelly. He didn't untune his guitar. He didn't make Plant unable to hit any notes. The band blew - all around. One bad night in an amazing career for these guys, who were as out of joint as a boxer years out of training showing up for a championship fight.
@GodSaveTehQueen , JPJ is shy; he rarely speaks up up unless first spoken to. The last time he did was to ask to join JP's new post-Yardbirds project, and that was only after Mrs. JPJ put him up to it.
I loved it, who cares about the thing being played perfect? Bug stages on a chaotic event like that are very difficult to hear things accurately and be spot on in a few minutes performance. One thing is for sure: Noone could ever play those songs better and more with the right feeling that Jones/Page/Plant - it's one of the big dramas of rock music that John Bonham couldn't be with them anymore.
Saw this tour at the Los Angeles Forum in August of 85. Great seats for a wonderful show just off the floor. Even served cocktails to our seats, quite civilized. Zep Again...
well yeah, and i think you bring up some good points. I felt that when Plant said "Of course i am in the 80's i have my own career" i felt that it was a jab at the other two for maybe being washups who can't get fame past Led Zeppelin (wether thats true or not is irrelevant, but it seemed that thats what Plant was saying). Plant was saying "I am musically valid on my own, and you are not".
Robert has always been like that. The only reason you think he's a sellout is because in his Led Zeppelin days the only personality you saw was his high one or his drunk one where he was completely stoned. Hes grown up, hes not the young one he used to be and now if you watch any of his interviews you'll see that he's a very intelligent man. You're seeing his true personality.
I think this is about 2 years post-heroin for Jimmy. You can see how different he looks from the ARMS concerts in '83. The lack of dope perhaps created more stage anxiety, not to mention the presence of a worldwide audience, hence the heavier drinking than usual for our favorite guitar player.
@@paradoxstudios6639 I'm going by what I read about him quitting in the early 80s, and by appearance. His quitting heroin coincides with a change in how he looks. During the '83 ARMS concerts he's incredibly thin, as he was from about '75 onward with Zeppelin, when we know his dependence on heroin was worsening. I think he drank quite a bit and did a lot of cocaine during the first couple of years after quitting heroin. And for that I'm going on the 3 (or so) arrests he had for coke in 1984. That makes some "sense" to me, trying to quit one thing and relying on another. And as far as I know, that was one of the reasons Bonham was having those heavier-than-usual drinking episodes in 1980--he was also trying to quit heroin. It was Jimmy and Bonham that picked up habits, while Plant and Jones pretty much managed to steer clear of heroin.
Of course, and yeah, Phil is a great artist and excellent drummer, no doubt about it - But still, it's absurd that the 'spotlight' was on him before the original members. Then again, looking at these historical interviews, and even the more recent interviews, it seems JPJ is not a man who is too fussed about attention.
Everytime someone tells me plant was a nice guy I just show them this video. He was driving the bus over everyone else back and forward multiple times. Buck passing expertise 👌🏻
He performed earlier in the day at the London portion of Live Aid, flew Concorde to Philly and performed again. He is probably dead tired and running on adrenaline.
The thing about Live aid is that they couldnt real hear themselves and there was no playback -crazy thing to try with a new drummer. That is why the Queen set blew everybody away, they rehearsed for exactly those conditions. I will take messed up Jimmy Page any day over Phil Collins.
You are thinking of Chester Thompson. Chester has been the live drummer for Genesis since 1977. Ex-Yes, King Crimson Bill Bruford did the job in 1976 right after Gabriel left.
Phil blames Page and vice versa. Page and Plant admit here that they did not rehearse. And with Page being blasted what did they expect. Clapton had no problem with Collins. There is a reason that Phil Collins is one of the best drummers in the world. Artists seek him out to do session work. He is that good.
Plant was always reluctant to get involved in any post-Bonham Led Zep activities, and I think he was feeling some frustration due to the less than stellar performance.
It's funny that I completely forgot (Or did I ever even know or care?) that Phil Collins was drumming for Plant on the 85 tour. I had just seen Plant a day or two prior to this show in my hometown of Saint Paul, Minnesota at the Civic Center, which has been torn down and replaced by the Riverside Center. That was the same place that I got to see Led Zeppelin in 1977 and a lot of other great bands of the 1970s. Sad thing in MN is that there is no history, everything gets torn down and replaced.
Phil Collins is smart. You can tell he thought this event wasn't really going to do much for the cause but bring some attention to it - which is true. Geldof lived in a nieve dream world.
Minnesota winters are hard on our buildings. I still miss the Met Center, where I first saw Rush. I missed Plant's '85 tour, but saw him at the Civic Center in '89. Were you at that one too?
Nigel Fortune Well, that might be. Still, Jimmy Page was twice as crappy and he should know the songs. I mean, he had probably played them a few thousand times before this show. But, he just did not give a shit. He was so wasted he could barely stand straight. What a fucking douchebag.
Probus Excogitatoris Thats bollocks. Page may not have played his best that day but as a drummer i can tell you if a drummer doesn't know the songs it throws the whole band out of sync. Thats what happened with Zeppelin at Live Aid imo.
Probus Excogitatoris You said Jimmy Page didn't know the songs. Of course he did. If you know Zeppelin you'll know they always improvised their songs at every gig and Page is trying to do that here. But with Collins playing so badly it makes the whole band sound awful.
Nigel Fortune No, I said Phil Collins can make the excuse that he did not know the songs. Jimmy Page can't possibly make that excuse. He just purely sucked. With regard to Stairway to Heaven (for example) Jimmy Page sounded like shit long before the drums came in. He claimed the guitar was out of tune. That might be, but his timing was also horribly off and his playing in general was really sloppy. But, I guess you think that's also to be explained by an out of tune guitar? Why is it so hard for you fanboys to just admit that Page was fucking wasted and barely able to play at this event. It was horrible. Plant's voice was in really bad shape. Jimmy Page was completely wasted. Phil Collins mediocre drumming was the least of their problems. In fact, Phil Collins was just trying to do his best in this horrible situation. I think Tony Thompson was actually more at fault, since he seems to be the guy mainly responsible for not keeping the time. It was easy for the other members to use Phil Collins as a scapegoat. His drumming was not in any way superb. But as said, he was the least of their problems. The whole band was one huge mess. Which is probably why the plans to reunite went all south.
@abrelosojo If so then we should have seen JPJ do more exceptional work after Led Zeppelin and get more fame than he ever did during his peak in the late 1970s. But, unfortunately JPJ never touched RP or JP in terms of popularity and in terms of record sales. His core support mainly comes from diehard Led Zeppelin fans who feel that he was sidelined during LZ and bass guitar players such as myself. I'm glad someone on youtube recognizes JPJ's contributions to LZ. Long live Jonesy!
at the beginning, the fucking reporter is like'' did you two rehearse before this event'' he totally fucking excludes john paul jones, he gets the shaft always, poor guy.
With all respect to page...Robert made the right choice to leave, what would his own career have become with a stoned geezer like that. To sad. Glad Jimmy back in driving seat again.
wenever i listen to zeppelin i always think of jones b4 any of the other members....the bass player is the most important part of the band..if my band got interveiwed id always let my bass player have the first say...not me!
Actually, Flip, having fun...Genesis and Zeppelin are my two favorite bands - Gentle Giant gets alternate weekends. Phil has said in interviews that he was heavily influenced by Bonzo espcially the bass drum technique. Take a moment and check out: The Musical Box, and the Return of the Giant Hogweed, Belgium performance. Then check out Gentle Giant....cogs in cogs...douchebag
Plant never felt like giving us Led Zeppelin! Springsteen continues on after with more horns in the band and adding clearances nephew ! and we have heard great material after clearance died!
Před 14 lety+4
hahahahahaahha Jimmy Page is completely HEAVY STONED lol
umm jones didnt just play the bass guitar...but poeple just recognize him as a boring bass player...but i dnt recognize jones as that.. i recognize jones as a skilled musician...he plays so many instruments other then bass and he is an amazing guy! and wat else does jimmy play? but not to put crap on jimmy they are both great musicians and jimmy page and john paul jones will always be one of my influences! someone told me no matter wat you played, you are still a great musician!
Bonham, all the way. But I always heard that Buddy Rich was unimpressed with Bonham--after seeing Zeppelin with his daughter or something. He wasn`t that wasted..
that john paul jones, damn he does not stop talking.
Why the fuck does everyone ignore John Paul Jones?
And that included Page and Plant.
I really want to punch the journalist for totally ignoring John Paul Jones!
Ya interviewer is a simple twat
Poor JPJ. He was the only normal one in the band, and never got the attention he deserved. He is the only surviving member of the group to not be honored by the Queen, and they just left him out of all of that Page/Plant stuff in the 1990s. "He was never much good at playing anyway" Now that's some bullshit 😂
Agreed! JPJ is a great musician, very talented.
Collins, the stand in, getting more attention than the legendary John Paul J. Unacceptable.
Thought the same 😢
I hate how he is so overlooked. He was such an intricate part of LZ. Everyone knows all about Plant and Page, and even Bonzo, but I think because JPJ wasn’t as flamboyant as Plant and Page, he was overlooked. Zep would not be Zep without JPJ or any of them.

acoustic360 best version, hands down.
That "yahoo" is Paul Martinez. He played with them onstage that day. He was RP's bass player for the RP's first couple solo records. A fabulous musician and very nice guy.
but Robert totalyl insulted the other two with his "i have my own career" comment

For Led Zeppelin as a whole, Jon was the best drummer in the world.
Page is sooo drunk!Love his reaction to Plant's remark on his own "career" at 1:18.
he was still addicted to smack at this point I believe...not just drunk
Phil didn't turn Page's fingers to jelly. He didn't untune his guitar. He didn't make Plant unable to hit any notes. The band blew - all around. One bad night in an amazing career for these guys, who were as out of joint as a boxer years out of training showing up for a championship fight.

Stairway was done wonderfully imo.
This is still awesome!
5:38 Jimmy Page throw his cigarette like a mystical gangster.
the best pepsi publicity ever!
great video!!!!
Saw this tour at the Los Angeles Forum in August of 85. Great seats for a wonderful show just off the floor. Even served cocktails to our seats, quite civilized.
Zep Again...
Page looks...hmm..."disoriented" like Malcolm Young in some mid 80's pics
well yeah, and i think you bring up some good points. I think if anyone got ignored it was Page at least JPJ got to speak a few times.
Yeah but probably for good reason, Page was so out of it to be honest he wasn’t speaking well
They look lovely. Love to see them laughing and speaking!!
5:21 Haha, Jimmy just shaking his head after the question about Zepp's future.
phil collins feel's like a true zeppelin musician. Great man, he plays always whith the best.
Interesting and nice.
1985. page's heroin period! which was followed by the alcoholic period (the fat Jimmy page period) thank fuck he lived though it all! legend!
At this time it seemed as if it had been a million years since they were together even though it had only been 5 years.
I think Jimmy's a bit more drunk
Can you people stop bashing the musicians that played with Zep. It really isn't necessary.
Cause he's the bass player...
I think this is about 2 years post-heroin for Jimmy. You can see how different he looks from the ARMS concerts in '83. The lack of dope perhaps created more stage anxiety, not to mention the presence of a worldwide audience, hence the heavier drinking than usual for our favorite guitar player.
You mean to tell me you can tell the difference between drunk reactions and herion reactions ?

Robert is used to Jimmy being so wasted , that he cannot talk. So he has no choice, but to speak up on behalf of all.
JAMES, YOU'RE DRUNK
I hate how they always leave JPJ out. They don’t even put up his name.
Jonesy likes staying in the background, thats how he likes it.
Very True
He performed earlier in the day at the London portion of Live Aid, flew Concorde to Philly and performed again. He is probably dead tired and running on adrenaline.
He played bass with them on Stairway to Heaven at this show, as Jones moved over to the keyboards.
The thing about Live aid is that they couldnt real hear themselves and there was no playback -crazy thing to try with a new drummer. That is why the Queen set blew everybody away, they rehearsed for exactly those conditions. I will take messed up Jimmy Page any day over Phil Collins.
jimmy at 1 min 20 seconds is classic!!
You are thinking of Chester Thompson. Chester has been the live drummer for Genesis since 1977. Ex-Yes, King Crimson Bill Bruford did the job in 1976 right after Gabriel left.
John Paul Jones doesn't get the Credit/Respect he deserves and doesn't Plant seem a little feminine?
he can be androgynous at times
too bad john paul jones never gets a word in. he's just as talented as the rest of em......and he's a good producer too
anyone else see Plants necklace?
I love his answer at around 5:30 "...... Yes"
love thoes three guys period. led zep!!

Drugs suck..... whats so good about getting high!
Rocknroll isnt about getting high.
does phil say"and they were shit" at 2.05

Minnesota winters are hard on our buildings. I still miss the Met Center, where I first saw Rush. I missed Plant's '85 tour, but saw him at the Civic Center in '89. Were you at that one too?

The thing is, Jimmy was handed his guitar straight out of the case, out of tune.
Plant looked old then too. Funny Page was 5 years olders
But what is with Robert in this video..."Of course I am in the 80s I have my own career"...I've never seen him act or talk that way...
Live and july 13 1985

what the fudge is Phil Collins doing there?
i have my own career. listen to robert. jimmy rolled his eyes
@odjo17 At the end of the day, unless you were there personally with Jimmy Page you wouldn't know whether he was ill, extremely tired, high or drunk!

jimmy actually says at 0:50 "Yes, for about an hour and a half or something, you know." but he is definately drunk because he slurs it all together.
thats nothing for pagey though he used to not sleep for weeks in the 70's
Bonham, all the way. But I always heard that Buddy Rich was unimpressed with Bonham--after seeing Zeppelin with his daughter or something. He said something about him setting his drumkit on fire (which wasn't exactly what he did) was more a stunt and not a sign of talent). This was from one of the Zep bios or fanzines or something.
What a second. Collins is a basic 4 4 beat drummer?? You obviously have never listened to early Peter Gabriel era Genesis. I don't think I could name a single song they played that was in 4 4 meter. I suggest you listen to The Lamb, or Foxtrot, expecially Supper's Ready.
Well Robert was on tour at that time I guess he was Robert's guest
0:49 seconds awkward
Ol' Jimmy Page, he's a big talker!
Sarcastic?
Well, yes, I know that whatever you play, you are "Talented" in your own right :)
And yea I know J.P.J played other stuff for Led Zeppelin, like the Keyboard, for which he did a great opening thing for Stairway to Heaven.
xD The random subtitles that come up. "Robert Plant" "Jimmy Page" No crap.
I think without JP and JPJ there would have never been Led Zeppelin.
wow, that was the most redundant comment i have ever posted...:P
uhauhahua
fantastic!!
Jimmy Page STONED!!
amazing !!
@ZoSoRecords I thought it was just after the performance cus pc was wiping off sweat! They all looked a bit sweaty!
Jimmy isn't wasted. He's totally fucked on Heroin.
Robert Plant sounds like a young Eric Idle in this interview
they should come to vienna ^^
thats an interesting thought, I dont know because good bass players are hard to come by but a drummer like bonzo... theres no other. Although jimmys addiction was ruining the band so they may have broken up regardless
wow....jimmy.....he's farrrrrrrr away.....
thank god he got out of it....
i luvvvv Percy to death.........he is sooooooooo perfect...
yer man :)
phil should have let the drummer that rehersed the gig do it by himself.i believe his name was tony banks, collins should have kept his beasty ego at bay!
