Breath of Fire was so unique, it's really sad that Capcom completely abandoned the series (Bof 6 will never be considered by me as a game). BoF 3 and 4 alongside Xenogears were the games I played the most as a teenager. Back then I used to imagine how they would look in the future with even greater graphics and art style

This was my first BOF. I haven't played it's predecessors, but I want to. Though, because this was my first one, and because of how it captivated me, it'll always be my favorite.
I loved the Fou-Lu chapters. Utsurowazaru Mono ( more recent manga) adaptation of these chapters made it specially brutal and heart breaking. I really wish we get a proper BoF sequel in the future, I mean Dragon Quarter was OKAY, but it's not of "Breath of Fire" quality. And no breath of fire 6 will never count in my book huhuhu :( That said, this vid made me want to play it again for the umpteenth time XD
Unfortunately, it wasn’t illustrated by Yoshikawa so it felt rather lacking in that department. And Dragon Quarter was even more rushed than this one, so while it barely reached those standards, it made up for it with really cool ideas -- gameplay & story-wise.
I finished this game about 10 days ago. It is so irritating to find out it was censored in so many ways.. I guess this happened to nearly all JRPGs in the 90s..
From playing all the games, I can say, it IS a prequel. The series truly starts at BoF4. The game takes place during the time when the world's ocean was choked by mud and silt. This is because the great desert was expanding which caused myria in part 3 to raise her tower and try to protect the world. However, Myria was a created endless made by Yuna. And he even reveals during the end credits that he can make more endless. Even though Capcom will never confirm it, the entire story arc of BOF4 points at it being a prequel to three and the start of the series which would mean the series goes from 4, 3, 1, and finally 2, with possibly 5 (Dragon Quarter) being a sequel to part two somehow.
Rei and teepo were just direct copies of BOF3, and the way that they put them in this game is like an alternate universe where they never found Ryu in woods after he escaped his captors
I think the story, characters, and gene system from BoF 3 puts it ahead of this one for me. I definitely appreciate this one. With this FF7 remake coming out to great hype maybe someone will get inspired to make a new BoF or do a big remake of one of their games. Either way it's my favorite rpg series.
Hold the phone, to my understanding, 4 is a predecessor to 1. This was the beginning of the dark dragons vs the light dragons. This is how Deis and Myria came into this realm of existence.
At first I didn't like BOF4, but replaying it years later would make it a favorite of mine. I wish Capcom would pick up the series again and make a proper BOF game for modern consoles. I wouldn't mind if it were 2D sprites and 3D background either!
I think Ryu and Fou-Lu in BoF4 are the split avatars of Lodon, the main Dragon God in Breath of Fire. My theory is BoF4 takes place in an alternate universe where they summon gods form other universes. Dies we know is a God and sister to Myria. and when Ryu and Fou-Lu reuinite at the end they become Lodon once more. The Infinity Dragon. Least this is the route I came to. Lodon is the God of the Dragons (Or Brood as they are also called.) So when he was split into two, each half represented a Dragon Clan. Light Dragon Clan being Ryu and Dark Dragon Clan being Fou-Lu.
In Deis's case I really believe she's the same from the three first games, however, I dont think the 4 takes place before the 1. I remember clearly she said she belongs to another world and the humans from BOF IV's world summoned her in order to turn her into a goddess
this is a game that i start over and over, and because i where playing magic the gathering at one of those times, after reaching the whole explanation about the endles deis give, i consider the endelss being some kind of plane walkers who move to other dimensions by sumoning, instead of free will, in their world they are "normal" but in other worlds their feauteres are perceived as divine since their nature is no bounded to that place. traped in there until other summoning or killed
Interesting stuff! I'm def of the opinion that the game is a prequel though - 3 main reasons: *SPOILERS* 1. In the end, the dragons are no longer gods and ‘live out their lives as mortals’. Big set up for the genesis of the Brood. Also, ‘gods’ of this type (gods of the natural world, so to speak) aren’t present in the other BOF games. 2. Yuna escapes and seeks to create another Endless god. Set up for Myria. 3. Deis remains in the world - it’s her BOF origin story.
I remember rage quitting dragon quarter and thinking it was the dumbest game ever. A year later when I understood the game more I came back and it became one of my favorite bof games of all time! A hint for anyone wanting to play it. You can't beat it on your first or maybe even second play through, it's more of a dungeon crawler than a open world game like it's predecessors. Accepting that helps out immensely! You do get more powerful with each play through since you keep a portion of your experience though to level up your character's at each beginning. There's also an experience exploit that can make you a God if you learn it. Enjoy!🙂
As I recall, the Endless in BoF4 are actually summoned beings from other universes. So Deis presence does not mean it is a prequel or sequel (at least not lore/world wise, maybe for her though)
One of my favorite games! The combo attacks - The story and being able to play as both the protagonist and the antagonist! the final choices you can make! Way ahead of it's time. Personally i believe it is one of the best games ever. When games had an actual good story and were not based only in good graphics and fancy attacks and ultimates.. I'm so glad i grew up with these kind of games and when games were in an experimental state, trying to improve slowly but steadily. And of course, not having any damn DLCs so the company can make more money out of it, by adding cheesy things the fan base wants... Gosh... I miss these days...

Funny thing is that when I was a kid (around 2000), I played this in a pirated copy but instead of getting the JP or Eng sub it is subbed in my country language (at that time English speaking people are very rare) the best part is that instead of using the NA version of the game it was using the JP version so I was confused when the video said "controversial censorship" since I remember as clear as a day about the peeking and the beheading part. You said the fact that Naga, the blue haired girl, appears in Breth of Fire IV is a connection with the first 3 games, maybe sequel or prequel. That is not the case. I remember well the plot. Here is the expanation: Fu-Lu was summoned from another world. Since the summon was badly done, half of his self did not come at the same time. The people in the Western Continent summoned him to be their emperor and to conquer all of the continent. Their goal was to summon a magical being with a lot of power to unify the continent. When he did conquer all of the continent, he became bored and decided to go to sleep to wait for the arrival of his other half. So he arranged the fake death and slept in his tomb until it arrived. 300 years later, his other half arrives with no memory: it is Ryu. In the case of Naga, she was summoned before Fou-Lu/Ryu, but the technique was even worse. Only her soul was summoned and it somehow was put in the robot character in the game. I would like to see your reply on this.
The localization is so rushed they spoiled Deis' name and the Endless early in the game in the conversation on the camp, before travelling to Mt. Glom to fix the King Sword.
This game had the potential to be one of the best jrpgs ever...they just messed up in a few too many areas. It’s a bit too easy, and all of the mandatory side quests are quite boring. I still love the music, sprites/animations, and combat/character progression systems. It also ends a bit too abruptly. It felt as though the true villain is barely even addressed. I would like to see your reply on this.
i agree BoF4 is the LAST iteration of the series they killed the series in 5 and i think they tried making a mobile of this
My older cousin bought this game and went to work. I opened it and played it until it he home. He got mad a deleted my save data lol. Good times.
Regardless, I’ve replayed it several times...the nostalgia is strong.
I started this game in 2001 and finally finished it in 2017 lol my favorite BOf and i think objectively speaking the best one for the series.
Im playing this game right now on my psp! Man what a gem of a game!
This game is truly a masterpiece. Nice pick you got in the video.
This series needs to be remade/remastered periodttt
