- When we heard there was a video game about art and curating, we had to give it a try. Watch us play Occupy White Walls and build and curate an art gallery of our dreams (well, almost). And don't forget to check out PBS's new show Monstrum!: / monstrumpbs

Wait, I need to know what it is Sarah doesn’t like about Renoir... anyone know?
TOO MANY CHERUBIC NUDE LADIES. I'm not anti nudity (czcams.com/video/0UMTckn23SM/video.html), just anti-Renoir. Happy to hear anyone's defense!
I’ve just spent the last twenty minutes researching and I can confirm that I have just seen a lot of butts...
The Art Assignment it what payed his bills.
There's nothing wrong with Renoir, they're dissing him because he's a popular artist and their debunking the trend of having unpopular opinions? I've heard this a couple times in just the last year, randomly. I hope they take this down, wtf.
@@erinsmith7461 Calm down.
Thought I was going to see a video game review; instead I got a video game review AND an introduction to several wonderful artworks. So cool. -John
This was like a Let's Play for art nerds with a little educational value sprinkled in, and I loved it.
It’s so beautiful to see a couple as simultaneously independent and in awe of each other’s work!
Don't you get an introduction like that on a daily basis John? XD
We'd love to see YOUR gallery... just saying :)
*hovers over teddy bear mask*
"But these are all terrifying and we're gonna take a pass"
Kinda looks/feels like an art version of Sims :D love that you can visit other people's art galleries. Very interesting game
Isidro cano
"I know they're bots, but they should be treated equal"
DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN
such an intense game! I've only watched videos of it, haven't played it myself.
I love how just as educated as other gamers are on armour and guns when playing their video games, you are as educated on the art as you're playing this videogame
Vegans love beautiful paintings of butter as well just sayin
HAH. Sorry to make that assumption :)
I was so hype about the butter painting (I'm vegan)
I never knew I needed art historian Let's Plays until now
Love more diverse content along with the usual stuff!
Not gonna lie, this was super fun. Totally on board with suspending all other content and only making gaming videos from here on out ;).
The Art Assignment I would love a video giving a tour of the gallery at some point, maybe after they’ve made some improvements to the game.
@@AnimeOtaku2 I think all I need to do is progress to higher levels, and then I'll be able to customize it in really cool ways. Guess I'll just have to play more!
@@theartassignment Stream it!
@@theartassignment can we get an update on your gallery?
I've sunk a bit of time into this game. It's very chill. A great way to relax.
You can find my gallery at erictheded.
not only was I convinced that I needed this game! I also downloaded it and was ready to play as soon as the video was over
It’s been said before but I’d really love to see you do a video, maybe a short series even on video games as art, perhaps in collaboration with a channel like Extra Credits?
Cmon people make this to the top
+
Other possible partners that were suggested elsewhere but thought it be wise to get into one thread would be Innuendo Studios and Errant Signal. If you made it a series it’d work well as EC is mostly focus on the process of creating the games while these two are entirely about analysis.
Wisecrack recently did one about The Philosophy of The Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide.
Downloading now! I'm extremely interested in exploring exactly what's represented in the game. Part of me is wanting to recreate rooms from the National Art Gallery in Ottawa, but I'm doubtful there would be too many works by Canadian artists. Not to mention, I would love to see if there was anyway to add work. There's a lot of potential with this game!
OWW does have the option of uploading artwork into the game. But right now it is either showing your work on the Discord and sometimes get invited into the games art collection or by emailing them. But you have to own the rights,. Most the older artworks are public domain. from what i know.
You can also suggest art to be added here steamcommunity.com/app/876160/discussions/2/1812044473322567839/
Update: Tom Thomson is well represented. My gallery is under the name DJEmmJae42 and it's called Three Pistols. 😉
What an excellent idea for a game as well as a helpful walkthrough of it. I could see that being a lot of fun.
Out of everything I expected from TAA, video games wasn't on the list. And yet, it somehow tracks :)
I surprised myself, Lorena.
@@theartassignment Now please make a case about Video Game as Art.
Really enjoyed the introduction to this game as well as your running commentary giving insight into your choices and opinions as you sorted through art. Covered a lot of ground you normally wouldn’t be able to in a more artist or time period focused video. I like that it allowed you to jump around and flex that art knowledge. I could watch a whole series of you building galleries and discussing the art you want to fill them with.
Yes please!
I have been looking for a game exactly like this for AGES! So glad we finally have a cool art curator game!
I love this game idea. It feels more like an activity and not a passivity
What do you do mean by that statement? Are games more interactive than other mediums, meaning that players have to be more actively engaged by them?
Heads up - For the past few years at VidCon US, we've done a group Art Assignment at 8am Friday near the fountain outside of the main stage.I'm not sure what assignment we will do this year, but I hope to see you there.
This was an amazing video! I had not heard of your channel until someone posted it into the OWW Discord. Glad you enjoyed it and if I recall it has around 3500 paintings there abouts from MET databases plust a few hundred player/streamer and living artists bringing it to nearly 4500 peices of art in-game.
Also the little blue boxes are pixels the currency of the Artiverse.
I have been OBSESSED with Hilma af Klint since seeing this. Thanks for this one!
I opened up CZcams thinking, "You know, The Art Assignment is the only channel I really click on right away." I clicked this video so fast! How fun!
This is something I would like to see more of.
It would be interesting if you delved more into the topic of videogames as a legit art for, games like The Stanley Parable, Shadow of the Colossus or Braid, just to name a few, Imho could certainly be considered art.
Andrés Rodríguez also This War Of Mine and the upcoming Warsaw which has been described as Darkest Dungeon set during the Warsaw Uprising. Maybe also things like Final Fantasy (especially 7, 10 and 15), Deus Ex and the Metal Gear Solid games. It’s actually quite interesting to see how developers in America handle the subject of warfare in games like the Call of Duty much differently to their Japanese peers in games like Metal Gear Solid or Ace Combat.
If you want some nice artistic analysis of videogames on youtube, I recommend Errant Signal or Innuendo Studios!
Life Happens yeah, I suggested a collaboration with Extra Credits too.
I guess games like the Stanley Parable or Braid are more of narrative than visual art.
Games like SotC or Journey are stunningly beautiful but their visual concept is more illustrative rather than communicative, so they are closer to design rather than art.
Now I want a golden-framed digital photo frame, that will show me every day new art work
I'm working on my art history degree, and I just jumped at the chance to play this. It would be great if galleries and museums could use this game to plan exhibits. I'll have so much fun making my own gallery.
Downloaded the game on Steam. Immediately tried to make a painting collage on one wall. I'm in for the long haul :)
*cough* LACMA *cough* "I'm contemplating the mistakes museums often make when they expand too quickly, or plan massive renovations that they can't afford or that don't actually improve the experience with art one has there."
Well, I was going to play World of Warcraft this weekend, but I guess I will be playing this instead. Art galleries > Garrisons.
This has a lot of potential, I hope they keep working on this. Imagine using it to plan a show of your own works.
I saw the Hilma af Klint in the thumbnail & knew this would be a good time.
I fell in love with Hilma af Klint's work every since I saw it at the Guggenheim last winter, it was an incredible exhibition, glad to see you're a fan too!!
Mage of Void I too am a huge HILMA fan.. and what a terrific idea and game underway! Way more interesting to me than the usual kill and conquer variety.
it is about time that one could start up their own art museum.
This is such a fascinating game. I'm going on vacation in a little over a month, and I think I'm going to download this for that time. It's going to be so much fun to see if I can piece all my favorite artworks together. Or if it'll have the artworks I want, considering I didn't see much when it comes to pop art in this brief segment of the game. But ah well, that's the fun of it continually being updated!
We've been doing this in Second Life since the mid-2000s! A lot of us have done original art in-world too. That said, this game seems fun and I want to try it out.
Second Life can be costly. I see a lot of people say stuff about SL but its not viable for just regular users with limited spending money.
This is Free! Although the art uploads are invite only at this moment that will change.
I hope desperately that, by the final version of the game, I can make a museum where you walk outside & Heizer's "Double Negative" is right there.
Thanks for making this. I've been heavily invested in the game, also having some of my own art in-game; been amazing to build and curate, as well as interact with the community, which is top-tier for online games, I feel.
"But these are all terrifying, so we're going to take a pass." "Next up on PBS: Monsters!" :D That great hilarity aside (and I truly do love your understated/semi-deadpan humour delivery!) wow, as an architect and art fan this game intrigues me very much! I'll ping back here if and when I have a chance to set something up! (and provided I don't obsess over the space too much :P)
As an interior design student who love art and want a career as curator this is absolutely amazing
Still after all these years it's still weird seeing the Yeti
To anyone here seeing this game ive been playing for a long time as when i first seen this it didn't look like my kind of game. however after trying it for half hour i was hooked on this really really great.
no micro transactions endless things to do. I only wish they mentioned the community as they are one of the most heartwarming and very welcomed community. over than all its a really god video about the detail of each paintings :)
The sass thrown at Renoir! Why can't you abide Renoir, Sarah? The people want answers!
The Dude (Sarah) does not abide. I'm with her. I feel like his stuff is just kinda weak/facile. Like, if I were to be more analytical, I'd say his approach is very much based in a style or visual aesthetic first, and capturing a moment from observation second.
OKAY. I just held my first 10 minutes of a total of 30 on a presentation about art and video games yesterday, and The Art Assignment just casually drop this hours before my presentation?
I'm now between annoyed and glad. Glad that I discover this game, and slightly annoyed that I have to rewrite my presentation for my next 20 minutes.
(But seriously, thank you for the advice! XD)
Anyway, for anyone who wants to visit: alvinbroo
Could you do a segment of trans artists in particular? I know the art establishment still very much hates trans artists and likes to hide them, but it could be really helpful. I know a lot trans artists who are very much into game design such as independent works, digital, sculpture, painting, and especially music.
No one cares if an artist is trans or not, it's about the art.
artpipe TX people have used that same argument for poc and cis woman and it still falls flat. The art world is never about the art it is about the connections and what is given value. For centuries unless you weren't a cishet man and didn't draw the established styles your art was never seen. Most groups of people that aren't cishet white men has had their work devalued or whitewashed by a capitalist institution that doesn't like its power structures challenged. If trans people have difficulty with even be able to rent or find a job do to straight up discrimination in most of the states why the fuck would you think that they would be liked as in outsider in an establishment market that is barely able to finally talk about cis gay issues and historically still straight washes artists. Things are never about art. There is always politics involved. Your argument of bigotry not existing falls a part the moment you give it any thought.
@@JP-dh1xv There are two "art worlds". The one you described isn't considered relevant because of the reasons you just described. There is another world, the real art world, consisting of artists who never get the audience they may deserve and artists who never sell enough work to make a living. Some artists are lucky enough to find success but it's organic versus a fixed game. The artists of local pop-up galleries, art fairs etc. Art here isn't auction for millions. In this environment no one is singled out. The original post relayed a frustration with the "establishment". My comment was encouraging artists to sway clear of this artificial "establishment".
This will be a new time sink. My room is TheSugarRay.
Thank you for the game review. Really enjoyed the background info on arts. The info on how a gallery owner might choose pieces. And even how a gallery is architected.
Yeah Blender is a good tool to load in real works of art. It allows you to photo the piece, set the dimensions of the piece, and the dimensions of the space. My photographer friend uses it for planning his gallery shows. And even when he moved, to figure out where all his furniture would go.
I like how this could be used by curators
People will say whatever they will, but I found this documentary to be absolutely riveting! (Which is weird because I usually only like kung fu movies that aren't as obviously dubbed as this one, but the historical accuracy and attention to detail more than makes up for the pleasant western accent narrating all the carnage and debauchery.)
Cheers!
Happy to see you post!
I love the added "inside this painting at least" because truly the picture means nothing just because they pick someone for the face don't mean they care about who you are politically or otherwise
it's awesome to see someone with real-world museum curation experience weigh in on this game about curating a virtual museum
An absolutly nice video, I lov ethe combination of art and video games, especially on this channel :) I think this game as a VR game would be awesome for a more real experience or better impression of the artwork.
now this is the kind of edutainment i'm into! i definitely want to play this!!
Fun video! I think I'll have to try this out. Something related I would like to see in a game; would be the option to explore paint schemes on Greek and Roman sculpture, and the option to create period correct settings( e.g your own villa with art collection). As well as being a fun way for the public to explore polychromy in ancient sculpture( and maybe create some art of their own) it would aid in understanding the art as it originally existed, in homes, and temples, and stoas, rather than art galleries.
01:58 Guitar Hero paiting? Did she foresee the future or did they got inspiration from this? A happy coincidence?
Now I cannot under it.
This was very peaceful to watch while I did spring cleaning.
After making the beginning of my gallery, I've decided to - also - become a OWW gallery opener, my own and those of others. Inspired by John Green being a Fortnite Pacifist, I did that too for a week or so, not half as fulfilling as what I do now. And while waiting for the level to load I can do some other stuff :-) and after 30 minutes I come back to open my own!
This is so cool I hope in the future more video games get involved in the art world
I think it would be cool if there were also recreations of the museums themselves with accurate works.
Like for example, I live in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. The only art museum I can go to with any sort of "regularity" is the Denver Art Museum, but I'll probably never go to MOMA or the Guggenheim for decades due to the amount of money/effort/etc it'll take to go to New York, and even then it has the added bonus of not trying to rush through crowds to see a painting.
I wonder if they'll add VR support so you can "walk around and see" things as they would be in reality too.
Some people have attempted to replicated museums in the game :) and right now you press V to enter first-person mode, which gives a VR type of effect.
When I took Cognitive Psych in college, we had to do a bunch of assignments in the ‘game’ Second Life, including going to art galleries within the virtual world. It was a pretty cool assignment.
Do more stuff about Hilma!!! Im talking a full length documentary!!!
What if there was a contest for museums or galleries using this game where people could make different layouts and the winner gets their layout made?
That would be extremely cool.
The Art Assignment yeah, I think that art curation is really under appreciated. In my last art history class we did a curator project as a PowerPoint but I think it would be very fun to use this game to stir interest in that field
that trompe l'oeil is actually by ferdinand bol, done in 1675. it's now in the national gallery of art (DC)
This reminds me of what I said the Met should do on one of your previous videos.
This is a really good game review... Which I know comes from your experience with Art IRL. Good job.
love it, the art of Michael Archibald in OWW is the best new art around
I hope they make this available on VR.
Why is that so hilaraious.
We want more gameplays!!
I'm a game designer and I loved this! Great video
Sarah's Let's Play pt. 1
see more on her Twitch
so interesting! the building aspect reminds me of the sims, which i love. i might get this game!
This is gonna be the first videogame I buy as an adult I was always afraid I wouldnt find a game like this
My wife mentioned she was reminded by this of the 1970 Parker Brothers board game, “Masterpiece.”
This is a very interested point of the Art Assignment, videogames have come a long way to be considered art, hopefully we have more literacy that not just reaffirms they place in art but also explores their artistic merits and how it affects the art world at large.
Also I seen this trend in a lot of PC game platforms offering experiences in virtual galleries, a more immerse experience in the digital reapm that simply a ng social media as an archive for Artwork
Great video as always, I'll have to try this out!
Great video! Did you keep playing the game? I'd love a follow up video if you did to see how your gallery turned out. The developers have added a lot of new content in the time since you've made this video.
You mentioned that the game needs a way to upload your own art. The admins of the game are always around and regularly add art suggested by the community, although you can't directly upload it yet as they have to check that the image is copyright free and of a high enough resolution. You can also make pixel art mosaics of any painting you like.
You are too kind, thank you! PS art uploads coming soon
would you do a review on logo making software and how they compare to actual designers?
Time to build an insane palace of my dreams :)
It would be cool if the masks could be pieces of art as well.
I really like the Klint pyramid picture. Also, I'm gonna check out that monster show. I wish I could have focused on monsters in college.
could you please tell us more about the techniques and materials that were used when you show artworks?
I've also dreamed of being a curator. This is going to be fun.
There are actually a few games with similar setting. Also their are games where art is a main focus of there story, like layers of fear or Passpartout.
I've not seen any executed and designed as well though and for free
Juneau Husky well that may be true, I just wanted to point out that their are more game with similar premises.
Holy! This is wonderful!
Can we get a whole series?
On the game? That would be cool
I hope that I'll be able to make a Rothko Chapel-esque gallery in this game.
Oh I really think you could. You will probably have to build a less impressive space first, to build up to higher levels and access more materials. Then you can demolish the old to build your Rothko Chapel, or just build it as an annex.
I have to get this game! Your studio is wonderful.
Hey TAA thank you for the lovely video and insightful art commentary, we'd love to see your gallery evolve over time.
PS the link to the game: store.steampowered.com/app/876160/Occupy_White_Walls/
A adaptation of this game to be played with a oculus rift would be amazing!
You are so right. That would be amazing.
When the game is optimised it is something Stikipixels did consider.
5:19 what’s the painting in the bottom right? Also 7:05 in the top right?
bienale 2019?? :)
I've been a player for a while now, I really reccomend this game!
Any tips for us?
Stoked for her twitch stream!
This is extremely neat!!
Awesome video!
Small nit-pick : a "trompe-l'oeil" is more exactly translated as an "eye-tricker".
Amazing tool.
The art featured in this tutorial is so banal I can't take it. Each new picture drains my soul and I am exhausted.
Say no to opaque ceilings! Go all Menil Collection on it!
I do hope this game really comes out, so much potencial to be forever stuck in development hell
Hey it's out, tons of people are playing it... Don't be confused by 'early access' :)
Does this game include sculpture, or just flat works (paintings & drawings)?
There are sculptures but not player created ones right now.
There was an image at time stop 5:47 of a female nude reading in a blue background, i have tried to look it up everywhere but the screen shot i took was to pixaled for good images and no other image search seems ton know it either (although i found some pretty amazing works trying to hunt it down) can you tell me who the artist is and the title?
I didn't even finish this before downloading OWW and playing it for 5 whole hours.
Hilma af Klint was obviously Illuminati inspired; considering she was inspired by spiritualism and she made a painting of a pyramid with it's tip going to the sun.
Also, I LOVE this video game! I got to start playing this!
We must see this on Twich!!!
