Thumper - Modern Warfare 2 Multiplayer Weapon Guide

The Thumper is a single-shot weapon, requiring a reload after every shot. It's unlocked once you reach level 14.
The M79 grenade launcher was designed in the United States with the intention of giving the typical infantryman more fire-power in a compact package.
The M79 is known by a variety of familiar names, such as the 'Thump-Gun', the 'Bloop Tube' or 'Blooper', and in-game: the 'Thumper'.
While it was eventually superseded by the under-slung M203, when it was introduced in 1961 it was the best option available, despite being only single-shot.
It fires the 40 by 46 millimetre grenade - the same as the M203 - and in real life can fire a variety of different types of grenade. In-game, only High Explosive rounds with an impact fuze are used.
The iron sights are an adjustable ladder-style leaf-type, as the heavy and slow grenade projectile will drop substantially over its 350 meter range.
In-game, the Thumper is essentially an M203 which resides in your secondary weapon slot rather than your primary attachment slot.
The only real difference is that you must aim with the iron sights when firing the Thumper, as with the RPG.
If you attempt to fire from the hip there will be a delay as the weapon is raised.
The Thumper is useful when you want the explosive power of the M203 but are not using an assault rifle.
Of course, it can be used in a grenadier class where you use both the M203 and the Thumper, giving you 4 grenades in total.
The arc of the projectiles limits the range of the Thumper but does mean you can land grenades around corners and through windows without line-of-sight.
The blast radius means you don't have to get a direct hit on enemies either, so blindly firing into occupied buildings can be very effective.
It can be employed against more open areas too. Often to great effect around well-trafficked corners and known choke-points.
In any game mode with a predictable enemy movement, such as Domination, the Thumper is a useful tool.
There is a minimum arming distance for the Thumper, meaning that grenades have to travel a certain distance before they will detonate.
If they strike an enemy or hard surface before arming, they will either ricochet off in another direction - or will kill the enemy on impact.
While not an ideal close-quarter weapon, direct impacts are useful if you're caught up close with your Thumper.
A direct hit anywhere is a reliable kill, but be warned: if the enemy has Painkiller active, a direct impact will not finish them off - and you'll be vulnerable to a counter-attack.
You can use the ricochet off hard surfaces to perform 'bank shots' around corners or to reach impossible angles, but these tend to rely more on luck than skill.
But, as far as perks are concerned, Scavenger is a grenadier's best friend.
Obviously One Man Army can't be used as you lose your secondary, so Scavenger is the best way to keep yourself supplied with grenades.
This does mean you need to stay on the move - if you camp in one spot you'll quickly run out.
Danger Close is the best red perk to ensure the effectiveness of your grenades - but you need to make sure you're using a primary weapon that remains effective without Stopping Power.
With Danger Close Pro your killstreaks get a buff, so choose explosive streaks to maximise their effectiveness.
The Predator missile, precision airstrike, harriers, stealth bomber and both the AC130 and Chopper Gunner are all more effective with Danger Close Pro.
On larger games such as Ground War with open maps a Danger Close airstrike can be deadly.
Sit Rep is a good third perk for explosive classes as the indicated position of claymores usually means there will be an enemy within.
A well aimed shot through a window could well be their demise.
The Thumper is as effective as the familiar M203, but comes with the added flexibility of occupying a secondary slot.
Whether used instead of or as a supplement to the under-slung launcher, the Thumper is devastating when used on predictable paths and choke-points, and becomes even more formidable when paired with Danger Close.
If you're using a versatile primary weapon that's effective at long range as well as up close, the Thumper will be a good companion, adding in explosive ordinance to your arsenal. - Zábava

@TheOutnumber The Intervention and Barrett are technically unlocked at the same time - I started with the Barrett as it's an easier sniper rifle to use and I needed the practice before getting to grips with the Intervention.

Already did with the XM-25 in MW3. Although it's not that overpowered since Raven Software made sure the grenade launchers were kind of nerfed in MW3. Although I'm kind of sad that the Milkor MGL hasn't made it's way into COD yet. It would be fun going around with that thing blowing people up and then reloading it like a revolver.

of course. It's a review of the thumper (and the china lake). This includes everything that can help or hinder them. Not looking at those is like comparing guns without considering any attachments or perks; it's like comparing cars without their miles/gallon or their handling capability.

Thumper is very good in Domination when pared with RPD/Grip and with perks such as Sleight of hand , Stopping power and Steady aim

Man, Your weapon guides are the best
Very informitive and well done video. The only problem I have with the thumper online is sometimes it dosen;t do anything more often than not even when shooting both nades at the same person when it blows up on top of them it dose nothing. but that is far from the course even when I am standing pumping a mg4 into a guy who is running at me I unload basicly my entire clip into him and he runs straight through it and knifes me for a kill.

God damn that precision airstrike at around 3:40 on Afghan was deadly as fuck, lol. During that Afghan clip when he got his predator missile and then he got his precision airstrike killstreak I was thinking "who uses the lame ass precision airstrike when you could get one more kill and get harriers", but then he got a clean multi kill with it and proved me wrong right away, lol. It's just that almost every MW2 clip you ever see has Harriers, then either a pave low or chopper gunner or AC-130, then the nuke, so seeing a precision airstrike just threw me off a bit, lol.

Da Gabaza it was most widely used launcher in vietman, they can bring it first then make it suck.
Gab MW2 also had Danger Close, Scavenger could resupply grenades, and One Man Army was a balance nightmare. Black Ops doesn't have any of that, and the explosives are weaker than MW2's as well

Technically, the China Lake is the China Lake. It was an actual weapon during Vietnam, along with the M79 (thumper). So the China Lake is not a derivative of the Thumper.

Actually, the grenade launchers had very good potential in this game, such as for clearing out campers... But the cheap players abused them. I still like to use a Grenade Launcher, or 'Noob Tube' on my Assault Rifles to occasionally check around a corner.

I love the Thumper rather than the sluggish AT4 but still thanks to this guide I may have that the Thumper at first but onc I tried it w/Danger Close I got an AC130 w/just the thumper 3 times in just 1 day and I can never do that at Ground war but thanks to Danger Close and the Thumper I would've never got it. Thank you Xboxahoy for this. The Thumper is now a Favorite Launcher of mine thanks to its usefulness in Ground war and fast draw time and reloads I also loved the Impacts Thank you man! :)

What people dont know is that the China Lake is a modified version of the Thumper. It was modified to fire grenades at a more rapid rate of fire.
lots. What perks to use with it, tactics, movement speed changes, the fact that if you don't crouch people can shoot your feet, running puts the shield on the right side, exposing your left, putting riot shields on your back protects your back, etc.

@perstoffer95 i agree, but the m16 was one burst kills mostly, and yes, the mp5 wasn't overpowered, but it was a good gun. the acr remains ineffective if you can't get enough shots from the low damage, and the scar only has 20 bullet clips, which makes it hard to kill multiple enemies without reloading. and the m60 makes you slow from the ads, weight, and mobility :)

...China Lake is a prototype weapon that eventually failed to pass testing, while the thumper was a fairly popular weapon used in Vietnam.
@bling1523 That would be because those 3 nations manufacture most of the world's weapons, although Belgium are pretty good too. The Famas deserves a mention too, and that's French.

MW2 is so badass it literally has weapons from Terminator 2.
People usually tell me that Intervention is shite, especially when compared to the Barrett. Barrett - faster rate of fire, bigger magazines yet identical damage. What people don't seem to notice is how gentle the Intervention's recoil is compared to that of the Barrett. It makes it a lot easier to place a second shot in case you missed or got a hitmarker. The Barrett can go scr*w its rate of fire as long as it has that brutal recoil on. I think that makes the guns pretty balanced in my opinion.

Actually they fire the exact same type of grenade and were developed a few years apart. The only difference is they were used by different branches of the military. The thumper being the marines, and the China lake being the Navy Seals. I believe.

I was bored. That's why I was on youtube. He didn't, but when he asked for help on a weapon it's safe to assume that he was also thinking about how it sized up in-game, and since when in a MW2 or black ops match did you not have perks?

It probably would be. The XM-25 only has 4 and can still score at least 2 kills and 4 kills if all the grenades hit on mark. So for a CoD game it probably would be overpowered.
