Mora Companion Bushcraft Knife - Custom Leather Sheath Build

- The Mora Companion is one of the most popular Bushcraft knives on the market, but the plastic handle and sheath make it look like a low budget tool. In this video I show how anyone can make a nice leather sheath to fit any knife, how to make the template, cut and stitch the leather and end up with something that will last a lifetime and be a true companion on your belt. Hope you enjoy and give it a go. If you haven’t already, please subscribe and hit the bell so you don’t miss out on future videos.

I wish you made these beautiful handled Moras and sheaths for folks like myself to purchase, it's just lovely!
Just tuned in to your channel and I gotta say - this is what CZcams is all about! Your videos are made with a passion for the craft and are yet so down to earth and peaceful without bein overly ecstatic like many others. So I suppose I should really say good job and keep it up!
Thanks, that's really great to hear. I've been having a little break from uploading but will be back with new vids soon, all the best mate 👍

Two beers in, clicked on this vid, best intro ever.
Watching this video again Skye for the unknown amount of time, you are so good at explaining & talking us through what your doing, I really enjoy these video's, you have a gift for this kind of thing my friend, (that knife & sheath look Awesome) take care & ATB 🙂🥃👍 Andy
Good job Mate ! I have to get a stitching pony; or make one.. After wet forming and drying - I use some melted beeswax & netsfoot oil. Warm it up and dip the sheath in it.. Also- if this helps - stitch from the top down; leave some sinew ; and attach tin cones or copper cones with horse hair .. Make it look frontier-ish... You can add old traade beads, etc.. You do very nice work - stay safe Mate - thom d.
Good set of videos. With the price of leather lately in S Africa, one can hardly make the leather sheaths that i used to make in the past. I usually make more of a "belly" with the leather at the blade side, it makes the sheath look better even if it does not adhere to the blade shape. I also make the sides of the sheath wider and glue the protective insert in and make sure there is an overlap which I then glue together. I then sew two layers of leather instead of three, It does the job of protection, makes for easier sewing and looks fantastic when finished. One can argue that the insert is not sewn in, but I have a number of sheaths that i made over 5 years ago when I started doing this and never had a problem of the insert coming loose or shifting..
Just found your channel. Well done on the Mora handle. One tip for guestimating the length of the thread for your main stitching run, Measure the length you have to go, and times it by six. You will have a bit of waste, but that takes into account the fact you are using the two needles and the thickness of the welt as well. Also if you use a belt sander on the edge, followed by a bit of spit and a burnish with a round piece of wood you will burnish the edge, which will help stop water absorbing into the edge over time.
Thanks, that's some great tips 👍
I'm hoping to make a burnishing tool at some point and get better results but it's all fun learning. All the best mate.
Skye
that was great...you have inspired me to redo my mora and make a sheath...thank you
Great job on both.
Good on you Skye. You have reached a mile stone well done mate and great handy work shown there as well. All the best David

Thanks, 10k seems far away but fingers crossed one day. All the best
Skye

I will give it a try, cheers!
That's awesome to hear, let me know how it goes please, all the best.
Skye
what thickness leather would you reccommend?
@@jaysbooshcraft3889 for a knife or axe sheath around 3mm is nice, the thicker it gets the harder it is to work with though. All the best
Skye
well your second sheath is great nice work there and great vlog 👍👍
Thanks, I'm really enjoying getting into leatherwork.
All the best 👍
Skye
You can balance a hammer, too?? You're quite a cool guy. Great video. Nice job on the sheath. Thank you for sharing.

Firstly congratulations on your 1,000 + subs well deserved mate 🍺🍺🍺 cracking job on the leather work wish I had a man cave to work in atb jimmy 😎 😎
Thanks I'm so chuffed 😁, for me having a workshop is as important as a kitchen lol, if I'm not going to the woods I'm usually trying to make something. All the best.
Skye
Some things I have learned:
You can buy a small block of beeswax and hold your thread/cord down with your thumb and pull the length twice or three times, coating the thread/cord. Then run the length pinched through your thumb and finger several times to remove any excess wax to your liking. Makes any thread/cord you use the same as wax thread. I do this anytime I make a sheath just to condition my cord. Freshens old cord up a bit.
Blunt needles are best for saddle stitching. After you glue the leather and as you're stitching, if you buy a large cork jug stopper/plug/lid you can use it as a backing to poke the holes against with your leather awl to open them up a bit before you sew. Makes it way easier to pull the needles through.
I'm not professional by any means so take this advice with a grain of salt. I do these things and they work for me making working leather a ton easier.
p.s
I use clothes pins to hold the leather together while the glue dries. Works for me.
If you want to hide your knot, run your needles in between the sheath and the welt instead of all the way through the sheath. Double stitch and then run it inside and knot it.
You can also dampen your welt after you've stitched your sheath and sand it lightly to make the welt even. After sanding it even I dampen the welt with a rag and burnish with a piece of wood very lightly. It really welds the welt shut nicely.
Great sheath man and the handle was beautiful. I subbed and liked both vids.
Nicely done - I see you have a bottle of jagr in case of emergencies. Congrats on the 1K
😂 Yea it's for medicinal purposes lol. It's practically a bar in my workshop, there's a few other bottles in the cupboard and a healthy stock of beer 🍻 I'm prepping for doomsday with booze instead of food, it'll be a lot more fun that way 😂😜
Hi my friend! Awesome Video! Thanks so much for sharing!
Stay Blessed!
Thanks for the support, all the best.
Skye
Nice piece of work there. Tidy 👍 Grand👍
Thanks 👍
All the best
Skye
Looks really good Skye.
Alot of times I'll clean up the edge with a sander then burnish with a dowel after wetting the edge. Give it a try 👍
Congratulations on subs
Yea, I really need to make a burnishing tool, my neighbour has an awesome wood lathe, might invite myself 😂 it's bad to admit but I kinda finished the video quick cos it was midnight and I had work at 6:30 the next day. Its a hard life lol. All the best
Skye
@@SwampValley I hear yah 👍
Congrats on 1K! Really cool sheath
Thanks, all the best.
Skye
Very impressive, I have been trying this with no luck. Very talented I enjoy your channel.
Thanks, where is it going wrong for you?
Well starters the leather I have is really soft and I can’t keep the shape where it holds the knife in. Knife falls out.
@@HaggardOutdoors the leather I'm using is about 3mm thick and if you wet form it it should hold a better shape around the handle and stiffen up a bit.
Swamp Valley ok thanks
Good work dude - nice sheath and of course congrats on the milestone!!
Thanks, I really appreciate your support 😀👍
All the best
Skye

Skye
Well done on the subs , you have totally transformed the normal mora into an awesome mora, great work 😊
Thanks, I'm hoping to inspire folk to give it a go, most bushcrafters have an old mora or similar lying around and it's a great project that doesn't cost a lot. All the best
Skye
Nice sheath mate👍and that leather has got a nice pattern and colour to it no need to diy it then I suppose 👌
Thanks, its really nice leather, kinda mottled. Wish I had more of it. Thanks for checking out the video. All the best.

That's great to hear, hopefully so 😀 all the best Mr mad dog 👍
Just found your channel catching up on your back log brilliant videos 👍👍👍🏴
Thanks Paul, that's great to hear. All the best 👍
Skye
Nice video. A couple of things. Use your edging tool on both sides of your leather before you put anything together. Get some rubber cement. Apply to both sides of the leather, let it get tacky, squeeze together and you can work it right away. Buy a leather burnisher and tokanole leather finisher and burnish your edges. This will give you a professional look. Thanks 🎸🔪
VERY informative and useful. Thanks! If thats your second sheath - that gives me some confidence to work with.
Looks amazing! =)
Thanks, all the best 👍
Skye
You need a Pica 150/46 Deep Hole Marker. Best marker pen. About 6 quid on ebay. I think you can refill them too. Adam savage of tested/mythbusters fame uses them so they must be good.
Just watched both videos I don't have the materials so what I'm asking is where do I send my mora and how much? Lol. Great job in personalizing your own.
You my friend are a genius, really enjoyed this video (as I did the one where you did the handle) wish I could do this, great work 🙂👍
Very cool and talented young man. Congratz on 1000 subs.
Now, go smash and crush something.
😂 Thanks mate, I'll go crush some cans, but I'll need to drink the beer out them first 🍻👍
All the best mate.
Skye
Those sandpaper scissors still cut ok!
Yea, it actually makes them sharper, but I wouldn't try it with expensive ones. All the best mate 👍
Skye
Just picked this up in my feed...lovely work! How thick does the leather need to be? (apologies for being 2 years late!!)
Isn't that contact cement and don't you need to let it dry first before pressing it firmly together? I might be wrong.
You're absolutely right 👍 I do wait and do it properly when I fold the sheath round @ 25:00 but sometimes I just wing it lol
Years ago a friend of mine had a sheath knife on his belt and took a fall, the knife went through the sheath and into his leg. He almost bled out before we got him to the hospital.
To this day I refuse to carry a fixed blade on my hip unless it is in a plastic sheath. My buddy about bleeding to death was pretty effing sobering.
Wow, that sounds terrible, I might still use a leather sheath but I'll be careful 👍
All the best mate.
Skye
Some of the traditional Scandinavian sheaths use a wood or plastic liner inside the leather. Granted it's thin material but would probably prevent the blade coming through the leather.
@@avgvstvs70 I'm sure it would make it stronger, might make a traditional scandi knife once I get my new workshop built, that would be a fun one 👍
All the best mate.
Skye
That’s terrible about your friend! How many of us know about friends that have died. Or were seriously injured in car accidents? Do we quit driving our cars? Sometimes we take risks. I can’t give up my fixed blades, axes, guns, or cars. Truly sorry about your bad memories!
Those are the smallest scissors I’ve ever seen
what mm thickness is your leather ?
Cool Sheath, there's a place called www.leprevo.co.uk/ who do a ton of hide and leather working supplies if your looking for materials etc. Great vid as usual , your intro's are making us all laugh here, keep up the good work. ATB.
Thanks for the link, I struggle to get leather, glad you like my cheesy humor 😂 all the best
Skye
I just clicked on your video and you scared me .
😂 I have that effect sometimes. Just wait til you see my Halloween video 👻
Your face is cute though
@@MonjuPatiri 😁 thanks
