I was thinking since I've never done this before is it as good as a star bolt since there's nothing that acts as a washer holding the face from bowing out any further or are the heli-ties bigger than the hole you drill so it grabs the brick

What prevents the 2” x 4” stud from bowing over time?

It’s possible but unlikely. The helical tie would actually prevent that. We tell the homeowners to check for any mortar pops or holes about once a year which can be a sign of movement. We did about 20 in last 5 years and I never received a call back so I’m pretty confident in the system. It also depends on the bow itself. Steel can be added to studs to stiffen and support in a worst case scenario but something that drastic you’re probably better off tearing down and rebuilding. In each job I defer to the structural engineer and follow the drawing

Where do you get the helical ties?
