You simply don’t survive a well executed ambush. The SOP is to fight through and hope you’re aggression and momentum is sufficient . I ambushed a COY of Rangers whilst attached to the USMC during an exercise to ascertain worth of aforementioned units in leu of proposed cuts in their defence budget. We were an eight man section of Royal Marines (40 CDO, A Coy) and during a recce patrol had to take cover on a bank of high ground above a track that the Rangers were moving on. The last man spotted movement and as he further investigated we opened up and took out the whole Coy as they willingly and tragically entered into our snap ambush. A few slick mag changes later and the umpires had credited us with over 40 confirmed kills. As we patrolled back through our shared harbour position a USMC Major took off his Stetson and uttered the words “God damn you Royal Marines” Pantomime season had began in the cearribiean.

I see from some of the comments here an affirmation of my first impression, that it would be unwise to stop your boat in front of an ambush. In this sitting duck response, the enemy would have a field day after disabling the first boat with RPGs. And having a hovercraft, which is an exceptionally vulnerable craft, attempt to rescue survivors in front of this hell on water, would turn out to be a lesson the Royal Marines would not have to learn twice.

Jorge F - They look like drysuits, just search Royal Marine Commando Drysuit and it’s likely you’ll find it. More than likely it’s a civilian system that they’ve repurposed for military use, as opposed to a worked up military design.

I sometimes wonder if the British Military high command learned the lessons of the Falklands war - the shameful lack of speedy deployment - that crucial logistical dynamic of getting troops from ship to shore? As an ex merchant mariner, and fortunate to have left my ship only weeks before it was commandeered by the British Government; and, sent with the task force. I still feel pained watching the news-reel shots of the 'St Galahad' going up in flames, and the the thought of 80 odd men sacrificed needlessly. All because of the unconcern and arrogance of regimental senior officers who should have known better. The British squaddie is up there among the best - but for all his training and dedication - only as effective as those in command.
