I remember one Saturday morning in the Autumn of 1972 going through by bus to Falkirk (17 miles away) specifically
to buy this album, never heard it before and had no Genesis albums, loved the Paul Whithead artwork. Was blown away when I put
this on the turntable. Still have the album, happy memories.

If you frequented the Falkirk music scene in the early 70s you may remember a band called Bodkin, these guys really should have made it big, there 1972 album is rare and still sells for a fortune. I had a copy from one of their gigs but loaned it to a friend, what a pity as I never saw it again. Happy days.

@@MomentsNotice I wouldn't want to say one musician is better than another, what with taste being subjective and the whole question of what is it that we're really trying to quantify with a term like "better" in re to the arts anyway...? But I will say that at least IMHO Tony was always the most *tasteful* prog rock keyboardist. All of his solos are through-composed with no 32-bar stretches of improvised wankery or whathaveyou. He didn't even try to draw attention to himself while on stage, preferring to let all the focus be on the singer.
Just an opinion freely given; not trying to ruffle any feathers. Looking forward to seeing them this coming December 8th in Columbus, OH (and already feeling rather melancholy about this, knowing it's very likely gonna be my last chance to see them).

Aye. And I say even more harmonically sophisticated, albeit in a a less obvious, less flashy, more subtle way. The way TB uses moving triads over static bass notes and/or bass ostinatos, creating tension/release, suspensions and resolutions and over more 'vertical' and i'mpressionistic' harmonic colours is kinda second to none IMHO, and largely responsible for the core musical character and personality of Genesis.

I'm no drummer, but this song's rhythm always makes me think of the word "paradiddle".
(Best i can explain it is that this is the word they use for a common technique where one alternates between the use of left and right hands in passages where you're repeatedly striking the same drum head over and over, so in the sheet music or a song chart you might see someone writing "LLRL, RRLR" or whathaveyou so they remember the particular strike pattern that makes it the most ergonomically practical to play that section.)

“Watcher of the Skies” ~ Genesis ~ 1972
“Watcher of the skies, watcher of all
His is a world alone, no world is his own
He whom life can no longer surprise
Raising his eyes beholds a planet unknown
    Creatures shaped this planet's soil
Now their reign has come to end
    Has life again destroyed life
Do they play elsewhere, do they know
    More than their childhood games
Maybe the lizard's shed its tail
This is the end of man's long union with Earth
Judge not this race by empty remains
Do you judge God by his creatures when they are dead?
For now, the lizard's shed its tail
This is the end of man's long union with Earth
From life alone to life as one
Think not, now your journey's done
For though your ship be sturdy
    No mercy has the sea
Will you survive on the ocean of being?
Come ancient children, hear what I say
This is my parting council for you on your way
Sadly now your thoughts turn to the stars
Where we have gone, you know you never can go
Watcher of the skies, watcher of all
This is your fate alone, this fate is your own”
Songwriters: Peter Brian Gabriel, Phillip David Charles Collins, Michael Rutherford, Anthony George Banks, Stephen Richard Hackett.

I grew up listening to Peter Gabriel's solo albums but not really listening to any Genesis other than their later hit songs with Phil Collins singing lead. I'm now doing a deep dive into early Genesis and what's really striking is how well-developed Gabriel's very unique singing style already was at such a young age. It was all there long before his solo career.

This was the first album that I bought with my own money after leaving school and starting work. 1972 I think. One of my new work mates invited me round after work and he played it. I had never heard anything like it before. I just had to buy a copy the very next weekend. Bought it again on cd in the 80’s. I love to hear it, takes me back to happier days, before I ruined my life by getting married. Haha.
