- As cylinders are added to an engine, each one must complete the four steps of the cycle during two revolutions of the crankshaft. The number of power impulses for each revolution also increases, producing smoother operation. If there are more than four cylinders, the power strokes overlap, as shown in figure 3-8. The length of overlap increases with the number of cylinders. The diagram for the six-cylinder engine shows a new power stroke starting each 120° of crankshaft rotation and lasting 145°. This provides an overlap of 25°. In the eight-cylinder engine, a power stroke starts every 90° and continues for 145°, resulting in a 55° overlap of power. Because the cylinders fire at regular intervals, the power overlap will be the same regardless of firing order and will apply to either in-line or V-type engines.

(Need HELP!!!!!)Sir i have a problem with my toyota d4 1jz fse petrol engine, i spend lot of money almost 2000$ & i clean every thing but the problem is still there..my car stalling only on 65 to 70 kmph with b/w 2200 to 2400 rpm..i check every thing no code is there..i researched a lot on internet.. i only solve the problem by disconnect vvti solenoid..now the problem was gone by disconnecting it..but this is temporary solution the performance goes down & i also check another vvt solenoid but problem still there..i researched a lot on internet i think 70% chance is torque converter beacause when i start car in morning the car transmission dont engaged on drive but only in reverse..after 5 to 10 minutes after cold start every thing is fine..my car moves ok.. there is little white smoke coming out from exaust ..petrol average is pathetic..3 km per litre in city and 5 kmpl in highway..i also overhauled the engine..the fuel consumption is also bad and stalling problem on 80 is still there may be its beacause of torque converter.. one mechanic told me that maybe its your crankshafts issues..no code is detected by computer scanner..only one code is there of vvt beacause of disconnect..plz plz help me
