On part two of this central Albanian tour, we take arguably the worst train in Europe to Elbasan, an industrial city just to the south of Tirana. The train was disgusting, dirty and full of sketchy characters as it rolled slowly through the Albanian countryside. It's certainly not a trip I'll forget soon!

The elbasan line has a speed of 30-60 kmh and the train is not scheduled to be 70 minutes long ride, on the schedule it’s supposed to take 2 hours and 43 minutes most of the time it comes on time, I know that it comes on time because I live near the station in elbasan and it was very unfortunate that you got stuck in the train next to Gypsies. In the summertime the train is better and has a lot more people than in the winter

Usually Balkans have the worst railway system in Europe. For example distance between Split to Osijek is around 680km, that is less then distance between Pariz and Berlin which is 887km, however, you need 8 hours between Pariz and Berlin, in Croatia, you need 16 or more hours on route Split-Osijek. Not only it is shorter distance then what is Pariz to Berlin but takes longer. It is not surprising because none of trains go faster then 120km per hour, and they usually move around 60-80km. Recently after 30 years again Split-Osijek line was established and this end in dissater, 16+ hours from Osijek to reach Split and not only that, there were more passangers in train then there should be so pepole were everywhere. Another example from Pula to Zagreb is around 268km, one train needed whole day to reach from Pula to Zagreb (23hours) i dont really know if thats true but i would not be suprised if it was. So yea we in Croatia have one of worse railways in Europe, and nobody do anything to improve it. There are promises, but those are promises only.

A lot of those people on there are Romani's or Gypsies. Love the graffiti on it, some of it is really well done. And careful with that Raki man, had a couple crazy nights. I'm pretty sure they call it Raki not Rakia? I never say the "a" because I don't want to get it confused with the Slavic names for the drink. It's basically the same thing.

@@TalesFromTheRoad that's cool not to be offensive for sure. Im not sure what they prefer to be called. And yes I heard they live on the train & abandoned buildings. Anyway Im so disappointed becaise when I went to Durrës back in October people told me train wasn't running. Some people lie to tourists asking about it because they are embarrassed, is what locals do in Durrës I heard. I think it's cool they keep it running, like the guide said, a preservation of history.

I have not seen any broken windows but trains are covered in ugly graffiti made by talentless losers and trains are quite dirty as well. Albania might have an excuse for having its railways in this condition but for Bulgaria it does not make sense. The country has been EU member since 2007 and there is lots of money coming from EU. Bulgarian residents should not travel in those shitty trains.
