I agree. What could have been done though, because the city is so small. Do not knock any walls down, but conquer them and get slingers up on the wall to shoot down on the defenders in the streets.. That would at least cancel out the choke point advantage

Hei Apollo, not sure you saw this comment on your previous Rome 2 video but just reposting it here one last time to make sure you see it!
You should do a battle/siege 4v4 but where there is only 2 armies facing each other. So like one player controls just archers, the other controls just cav etc. Kinda like every player is a captain more than a general. Would be interesting as players will control smaller portions of the army and therefore give them the opportunity of better macros and different tactics.
If you agree like the comment so Apollo sees it!

I don't use many if any weak units on defense. I bring a lot of Carthaginian Hoplites with are the middle of the tree. I bring a pair of Sacred Band that hang out in the middle and can check breakthroughs or fall back in order to fight with the African Pikemen at the end in a 421 game. Expendable units are good in the middle to simply tie up a breakthrough and buy time for organizing and reinforcing the next line of chokepoints, activate defenses since it takes a unit standing at stuff like the flaming balls to trigger them, but I don't feel like they serve a purpose on or at the walls or in the last stand.

Whenever I play as Rome, I always bring plenty of triarii well after the reforms. As defensive troops, they rank among the best I believe. That being said, I like using them on the front line to set up a defensive posture. Then with mid troops, I use them on my flanks that I use to attack with the hopes of envelopment.
In cities, they are worth their weight in gold. Using square formation can lockdown streets. Even with naval landings, a solid wave of spears is handy when landing your first wave. Auxiliary infantry could never match, even with excess to compensate.

If the Carthaginians and the Romans teamed up, which was as unlikely as Sparta and Athens teaming up after the First Peloponnesian War, then they would have ruled over the Mediterranean. They were far and away the most powerful cities in that region, and could well have expanded further. However, any alliance between them would have been like that of the Soviet Union and America, where they would have been suspicious of each other and eventually it would have turned to a war

@@user-qo5co8sp9q Maybe, but don't forget it was only really due to Roman intervention that Numidia became powerful enough to challenge Carthage, so whether any African neighbours were strong enough to actually challenge them at the time is up for debate. Maybe a coalition, but I feel the main enemy, even if they were allied, would still be Rome.

you only need a couple units guarding each stairway with archer support hitting enemy units in the back. They will burn more soldiers off trying to get entry. It is better imo to reserve mid/late tier units for fighting in the streets. If you can destroy them on the walls with ranged, you can make use of cav to hit their archers as they try to send more into the choke point.

Maybe if your attackers first wave is low tier, it is advantageous to defend with top tier units. Dispatching many enemy low tier soldiers without taking many casualties, shifting the balance of power.
A major issue with this I think is that if you aren’t careful about how many casualties your elites take, your opponents may get the upper hand with their elites later in the battle.
Perhaps unit level is then just as good as good and effective tactics.

To defend use the low tier first, enjoing the walls and tower advantages on your side, then use the medium tier to hold the streets and gain time, absorvb ammo and tire the enemy so that, on the last stand, you have fresh elite troops ready to hold against tired enemies without missile capabilities.

Maybe not so much in a game, but in that period, you’d lose every single batter if you saved the newest and weakest units for last. You always wear down the enemy first, then send in the veterans to mop them up 🤷‍♂️ it really isn’t up for debate. Unless the opposing force is entirely green, only way around it

Only 2 choke points, I could hold that all day. Easy win, defense all the way.

Organization is key.. time and time again I see players bunch units up, wasting their stamina and leaving themselves vulnerable to missile fire.. Late/mid battle you need to take inventory on what you have, and line your troops up properly. Also, if you’re getting jammed in a defensive choke point, be creative and send 2 or 3 units around the back with a siege tower. Always keep your defender guessing. If you just jam units into one area, you make it easier for the defenders. Also, (as the attackers) when you have limited time left, you need to commit your troops; painful to see units sitting around towards the end..
