Twenty eight - the song title itself, has a double entendre. Firstly, there are twenty eight grams in one ounce of cocaine. Abel is known to be a user so this could be of reference to his drugs. Secondly, twenty eight is officially the first bonus track of HOB (27 songs altogether in HOB/EOS/THURSDAY with twenty eight being the 28th bonus and last song from HOB. Video interpretation - the girl on the bed represents valarie “I left my girl back home” valarie is depicted in this menacing ghostly figure haunting Abel throughout the video in which at the end he is seen walking back to her. In this way, valarie also represents his old OG fans - without us, Abel wouldn’t be where he is, so in a way he is thankful to us but also upset because the fame won’t leave him. The nude women - represent the mainstream world, they only want him for his fame and he doesn’t seem phased by it. He simply just sits back and observes them, he sees these females as sexual objects, to feel good and nothing more. In the lines “Hey, there lonely girl did you have to tell your friends about the way I got you screaming my name” - a literal reference to his older fans. Abel wishes that his fans kept his music on the “down low” because now he can’t get out of the spotlight. Similarly, this can be used as a sexual reference to females sharing their encounters with their friends. The Line - “I shouldve left you in the Club” has two meanings. A) his fans, they could’ve been the “one” if they didn’t share his music w the world. B) cocaine, Abel being a heavy cocaine user can’t get enough of it, his addiction is following into his everyday life and he can’t escape it. Lastly, the interview - Abel has never been the type to hold interveiws and hates being in the public eye. With his first performance being the Toronto mod club July 2011, He didn’t think he would blow up. From House of balloons, no one even knew what he looked like. After the ‘girl’ (his fans) shared his music with the world, he is receiving this unnecessary undivided attention in which he doesn’t not show any interest to. Towards the end of the video he rolls his eyes. - This, showing how being in the spotlight and media bores him. This being my very first Abel song (since I was 11/12) holds a very close place to my heart. So, this is my analysis on the video.

@@teodoraaxo true, I think it’s because I never heard an artist really talk about their own personal darkness in music like this. This was pretty new in r&b. It was revolutionary to me lol not that his new music is bad, it just isn’t... this. I just miss it 😢

All these years I'm listening to this song only to now find out there's a video? I feel so ashamed of myself, oh my. Edit: I feel the need to clarify that we may not have known about the music video because we just listen to the song on streaming services. I have gone years knowing a song without knowing there's a video for it (like this one for example). It ain't that deep.
For anyone who wants to play this on guitar, here's how :) - Standard Tuning - Capo 6th Fret - - Chord Progression & Picking Pattern - Am, Em, Dm, F For each chord, pick: GBe (at the same time), then Bass Note [repeat x4 for each chord] This matches up perfectly with the piano! Repeat for the ENTIRE song! Hope this helps out! If you get stuck or need a little extra help, I just posted a video lesson for this on my channel :)
A marvel of songwriting, where even though there is a surface level message, the true depths of what is being expressed can only be seen by embracing your own interpretation. Somehow both universal and incredibly niche to the person interpreting it. Incredible.

I have a feeling that the short-haired girl is the mainstream music, and the brunnete one is his music before he became famous. So she is told to join mainstream music and dance with her. Then we see Abel is recording the mainstream music (short-haired girl) on the video, while the his own music (brunnete) is sitting behind. And the girl in front of TV (i dont really know if it's a brunnete or another girl) can be his fans from the time when he was not famous, or it can be his own music watching him now and getting upset.
no matter how many songs he put out, or how many music videos he puts out… this song will always be his best. its a fucking masterpiece, the lyrics, his voice that somehow can DO THAT if you get my drift. im upset that he doesnt do this kind of music anymore but so very happy that he is feeling better today. I just know, back in my mind that if he could, he would go back to this kind of sound if his music producers did allow it.
You can literally feel how nervous and introverted he is sitting in front of those cameras. From him walking up to the interview at 0:08, to moments like 3:36 & 3:44. Reminds me of my first time public speaking for school projects 😭 I swear, the personal limits this man had to break to get to where he is now. ❌⭕
Im just sitting here listening to all his older songs and im very impressed, hes amazing. The lyrics are on point. i think im becoming in a fan or something like this lmao

This and Rolling Stone literally foreshadow everything that is happening right now. And while I still love him and always will I dislike that so many people are into him now. Only because they claim to be HUGE fans day one fans when most of them thought the weeknd was a band or didn't even know his real name or any music before earned it and love me harder
+nathaly _ just cause someone is new doesnt mean they cant know more than you. Everything there is to know is documented and can be googled and read about. It's not that hard to catch up.
+Visionary Youth yes but that doesn't mean they have been fans since he started that just means they actually did their research and know their shit which I respect, but there are fans who don't know all that and claim to have been devoted fans from the very start
Currently 2024 and in 2011 his songs gave me confidence, eased my mind, and helped me feel a pain I had hid from now the pain is no longer my enemy because I know “to suffer on earth is to know peace in heaven”
This is The Weeknd singing to the media. He considered himself a very private person and knew to make it big out there he would have to become more mainstream with interviews and everyone knowing who is what he looks like and what he does.. The girl sitting at home represents fans who listened to him before he gained all the fame.. Looking bored throughout the whole interview he goes back to the girl at the end of the song.. Listen to rolling stone
Been looking for an interpretation. best one here. I just stumbled on to him last year and realized he's not so public, and realized that kind of makes him a genuine artist. I think not knowing every little thing about him lets you focus on his music...unlike other artists and celebrities of today.hope he stays this way though.
It was more so the public/media's view on what he does with his life, and how chicks are too quick to broadcast being with someone famous for personal gain. In the interview, it seems more like this older male (usually those who run society) is chastising him for doing something that society views as wrong; that wrong being fucking with this girl. This girl that he was messing with got stage-5 clinger status and starting bragging to people that she's sleeping with him. The media caught wind of his exploits, now he's on TV getting a "public canning" for it, when this chick could've just shut the fuck up. You also notice towards the end of the interview that not only does he look bored, but his eye twitches like when someone gets pissed about someone saying some shit that they shouldn't say; that follows with the narrative that the interview is a public scolding. How could this old fuck, sit on TV, not knowing who Abel really is, tell him what he should and should not do.All while this chick, who just benefitted from just fucking him, is watching the interview with this hateful look, probably because he dumped her ass. He's basically saying, If I knew you were going to broadcast my shit everywhere then I would have never even spoken to you. It's my fault for even letting this happen because I let you get too familiar. Now I'm sitting on TV because you couldn't shut the fuck up, getting scolded in public by someone who doesn't even know who I am; let alone someone who can judge my actions.
***** More like he's taking his fans to task almost, an artist becomes more famous and more mainstream their hardcore fans get upset and claim their music is watered down now. Weeknd is saying if his fans weren't telling others how great his music is, he doesn't become more famous and mainstream. He uses the metaphor of sex and his girl telling other girls how great their sex is which makes more women want to have sex with him. But in reality he's talking about his music which seems to be happening now because he was on the 50 Shades of Grey soundtrack this year that he's starting to blow up.
I was singing my heart out to this song on my way to work when I got hit hard by another car. My car flew a few lanes over and when it came to a stop the song was still playing on my stereo as my car was smoking. I just walked out of my car and sadly sat to the side looking at my smoking car and still singing til the end while paramedics showed up to check out my broken arm 😂 #truestory #memories

I miss this Abel so much. Idc I’ll always say it. The dark beat and lyrics. Man this era was so different. I was so obsessed with him
u should be happy that he's happier now and out of his dark phase because he really was deeply sad back then
@@teodoraaxo true, I think it’s because I never heard an artist really talk about their own personal darkness in music like this. This was pretty new in r&b. It was revolutionary to me lol not that his new music is bad, it just isn’t... this. I just miss it 😢
his new music is not as good as this. all because he has to conform to mainstream 😢

Nope😊
I'm right there with you, you can't go wrong with any song he's in.
I love every one of his songs too❤️ he's just perfect
Nope 😏
Ur not alone I have every song lmao
For anyone who wants to play this on guitar, here's how :)
- Standard Tuning - Capo 6th Fret -
- Chord Progression & Picking Pattern -
Am, Em, Dm, F
For each chord, pick: GBe (at the same time), then Bass Note [repeat x4 for each chord]
This matches up perfectly with the piano! Repeat for the ENTIRE song!
Hope this helps out! If you get stuck or need a little extra help, I just posted a video lesson for this on my channel :)
That's pretty groovy
Now i just gotta own a guitar and learn how to use a guitar

A marvel of songwriting, where even though there is a surface level message, the true depths of what is being expressed can only be seen by embracing your own interpretation. Somehow both universal and incredibly niche to the person interpreting it. Incredible.
TWENTY EIGHT LYRICS
This house is not a home to you
But you decide to go ahead and lay down, lay down
There are no words to describe the depth of your indifference
'Cause I see you're here to stay
Should've known to pick my fate
I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong
(To let you in my)
To let you in my home
(Now you know where I sleep)
Now you know where I sleep
(Never felt so damn weak)
Hey there, lonely girl
Did you have to tell your friends about the way I got you screaming my name?
Did you have to tell the world?
Now your girls all wanna fuck
Girl you could've been the one
Gotta change my number twice a month
When you could have simply kept it on the down low
I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong
(To let you in my)
To let you in my home
(Now you know where I sleep)
Now you know where I sleep
(Never felt so damn weak)
And baby if I knew you'd be living in my sheets
I wouldn't have shown you any love
I would have left you in the club
You said you don't belong
You keep saying there's no one
And there's no where to go
But who keeps calling on your phone?
I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong
I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong
(To let you in my)
To let you in my home
(Now you know where I sleep)
Now you know where I sleep
(Never felt so damn weak)
I'm so wrong, I'm so wrong

I have a feeling that the short-haired girl is the mainstream music, and the brunnete one is his music before he became famous. So she is told to join mainstream music and dance with her. Then we see Abel is recording the mainstream music (short-haired girl) on the video, while the his own music (brunnete) is sitting behind.
And the girl in front of TV (i dont really know if it's a brunnete or another girl) can be his fans from the time when he was not famous, or it can be his own music watching him now and getting upset.

im upset that he doesnt do this kind of music anymore but so very happy that he is feeling better today. I just know, back in my mind that if he could, he would go back to this kind of sound if his music producers did allow it.
You can literally feel how nervous and introverted he is sitting in front of those cameras. From him walking up to the interview at 0:08, to moments like 3:36 & 3:44.

+Visionary Youth yes but that doesn't mean they have been fans since he started that just means they actually did their research and know their shit which I respect, but there are fans who don't know all that and claim to have been devoted fans from the very start

Basically the unspoken issue of those who go mainstream.
*****
More like he's taking his fans to task almost, an artist becomes more famous and more mainstream their hardcore fans get upset and claim their music is watered down now.
Aggie85 Exactly
