Hello and welcome to another Movie reaction video!
I know it has been a long time since I uploaded anything here on CZcams.
I had to take some time off due to a lot of different commitments but I'll try upload regular content again. I have been struggling to find the time to edit.
This was recorded in December last year. Hopefully I can get a bit in front now and keep the content regular.

Rocky 2 is for me one of the greatest inspirational movies ever.
It's amazing, that "Rocky" won Best Picture, as it was the first major film, that Sylvester Stallone wrote & played the lead in. It's sad, but because of nerve damage from birth, Stallone's tongue is partially paralyzed, which makes him sound punchy, & makes people assume, that he's dumb, but the screenplay for "Rocky" was nominated for Best Original Screenplay, & he wrote it!
As an ex-film studies student, this is my fav film of all time. The story is great, but the story behind its production is just as good. I adore this film
Your reaction of this reminded me of when I saw this on the big screen as a teenager when it first came out. It really seemed to come out of nowhere and word of mouth quickly spread. No one expected such a great, well written and well-acted story. Soon it was HUGE.
So nice to watch someone appreciate this movie. Believe every comment that tells you that it is essential to go directly to Rocky II - it's the 'second half' of this movie. 👍
He wasn't berating Marie, he was trying to give her sage advice.
ADRIAN!! I love this film. It’s a true underdog film. Then you find out the story behind the making of. One of my top 5. ♥️♥️
You should definitely watch Rocky II. It's my favorite of the first two movies.
Younger audiences or from other countries, as far as explaining Apollo's dressing up as George Washington/Uncle Sam, 1976 was America's Bicentennial birthday (200 years) so it was a big deal all year long instead of just on 4th of July like a normal year. I was just a kid back then but I remember all the decor and hoopla all year long about it. In case that part is confusing to anyone not as ancient as me. LOL!
I like Rocky 17 when he fights an alien from mars!
That makes more sense, I didn't realize it, just thought Apollo was a genius wacko
Rocky is probably one of the 5 greatest movies ever made, it's a masterpiece.
I love this series. Although the movies in the middle probably wouldn’t hold up to film critics, they are just fun.
IMO The character of Rocky Balboa is the greatest movie character of all time. You really get to see the whole life of the character of you watch all the way through the creed franchise
Rocky 5 was weak, but the rest are really good.
I agree, Rocky is the best film character ever. Such an inspiring, sweet, deeply human character
Favorite scene during the fight was when they show the promoter smoking his cigar at ringside and watching his look of genuine understated surprise/interest giving a brief nonverbal nod to Rocky making this a genuine battle.

This movie should inspire all film students, as it was the most successful movie ever made (budget v. gross box office).. The film was made on a $1M budget, and raked in over $225M in box office (and probably double that in subsequent licensing for TV, VHS, DVD, Blu-Ray, streaming etc). All told, it went on to become a multi-billion dollar franchise.
I love this movie and its sequel.
I didn't appreciate it as a child and I remember being upset because he didn't win the fight.....
Little did I know then what this movie would mean to me once I was old enough to understand it.
My favorite parts are at the end. The triumphant music at the end...which should indicate that winning the boxing match was not the focus...... and the last words spoken in the film. Rocky was triumphant in his quest...which was to prove something to himself....and both Rocky and Adrian were triumphant in their relationship.
Both Adrian and Rocky's character develops so much over the course of the film..... a totally uplifting and triumphant story and the hero loses the fight, but it was never about the fight.
This is one of my all time favorites, your comments about the various cinematography aspects you enjoy really help me appreciate this movie on a whole new level!
Still can't believe that this movie won the Oscar for the best picture of the year, instead of one of the greatest movies ever made, ''Taxi Driver''....
Good to see you back, Ryan, and with this quintessentially 1970s film. Raging Bull and On The Waterfront are two more notable boxing themed movies with poignant, and often brutal, backstories. I really like your thoughtful reactions and wish they appeared more frequently, but understand that life gets in the way sometimes. Hope you're doing well.
Or, if you want to watch one from the period with a "You'll cry or double your money back" guarantee, then The Champ.
The awesome thing about the fight was that John Avildsen (the director) told Sylvester one evening to "go home and write this thing out". Stallone wrote pages upon pages. Writing the fight out punch by punch and movement by movement. The actors would then learn it like a dance, performing the fight as literal 'physical dialogue' between the two boxers.

The guy, whose name escapes me, who created the steady cam lives in Philadelphia and Rocky was the first time it was used in a real movi e to follow Rocky while he was running.
Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay for this movie when he was basically an unknown actor. The story is he wrote it in about three days. He refused to sell his script though until he was finally offered the starring role of Rocky. And the rest is history.
You might want to see Rocky II, which begins right where this one left off. It’s a very good continuation of the story.
He wasn't unknown. He had that one credit....
I know he was in Lords of Flatbush, which as far as I know was a film that went nowhere. I think he wrote the script for that too.
That song in the beginning when you said "I've heard that sampled from somewhere", it was Will Smith n Jazzy Jeff song " Summertime"
You just watched one of the best movies of all time.

There’s a documentary about the making of the film which is amazing. Sylvester Stallone ended up choreographing the fight scenes because they guy they originally hired wasn’t doing it like Sylvester envisioned. The budget for the film was ridiculously low. So many great things came from the movie!
Stallone describes it as more of a love story with boxing mixed in. You’ll find out everything revolves around Adrian and his love for her.
I think 1970's Hollywood will continue to surprise you. Despite decades of parodies focusing on cheesy '70's fads and kitsch, it was also a decade of maverick directors supported by ballsy producers making some of the greatest movies of all time.
The year before Rocky was made, Garrett Brown invented the Steadicam. Brown filmed test footage with the Steadicam to send to Hollywood studios to try and sell the use of the new camera. One of the people who saw the footage was John Avildsen and one of the test shots was Brown's girlfriend running up and down the steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. When Avildsen met Brown he asked him where those steps were and after a meeting with Stallone the script was changed moving Rocky's location from NYC to Philadelphia. Never knew this and super appreciate this informative comment. Difficult to think of Rocky as anything other than a Philly native. It's like the technological advance helped make Rocky the character he was always meant to be.

The Rocky and Adrian scene in his apartment is where i eithe continue watching the reactions or leave. I end up watching very few beyond that point, I hate today's world...

The Steady Cam was invented for this movie. Star Wars and Rocky were also released 6 months apart. You get the father of modern special effects and the steady cam.
The poster is a still shot of the original ending. They decided to end it with the end of the fight and it was perfect instead of him walking out of the arena later with Adrian.
the rocky films are about love. all the way into the newer creed movies.
1, 2 and 6 have the heart and the soul of this one. the others are pop(corn) fillers.
Philadelphian here. Yes alot of streets in Philly look like English streets because technically they are lol Philly is pretty much the oldest city in America, most of its streets were built when this was still an English colony. I can also say that we now have a statue of Rocky in Philly. Lol.

I always wondered, do Brits realize how much appreciation there is for your island here in the States? When we think of the revolution here we think of it as a revolution against King George and the idea of monarchies, not against the English people themselves. And when we think of the countries founding it's with great pride and admiration towards the English who founded it and the ideas they built the country on. The laws, the work ethic, the importance of education, ect. In the time of empire building you could do alot worse than being built by the English. I mean could you imagine being founded by the French. Just look at Canada. Or New Orleans. Or the Spanish, all the land they colonized is fuuuuked today

Great movie, written by Sylvester himself,
One of the main characters in the film was the city of Philadelphia. As someone who lived there in the 70s it showed a working class city during the recession. It was an underdog as well.
BTW, people who visit still run up the steps of the art museum.
I've loved the Rocky franchise since the early 80s. Welcome back!

Long time no see, I hope you and your family are doin' fine. My favorite Rocky movie is ''Rocky IV'', an incredible mid 80s popcorn movie.
It IS incredibly awkward and creepy by today's standards but the Rocky "seduction scene" was less about Rocky overpowering Adrienne and taking what he wanted and more about him getting her to crack open her shell and accept that she is a desirable woman worthy of romantic love.
Right - she was very tightly wound, with a very low self esteem because of her Mother. Rocky understood her better when she told him what her Mother had told her. Also her brother was an abusive alcoholic. At least verbally. She said to him, you always made me feel like a loser.
And speaking from experience, when a woman's self esteem is low enough, she needs help opening up, & coming out of her shell. If Rocky had let her go home, she would have gone home, & never gone out with him again, or probably anyone else. She was trying to avoid intimacy completely.
It always breaks my heart in that scene when Rocky tells her how pretty she is and she says “Don’t tease me”, as if she can’t possibly believe anyone would think she’s pretty.
All around a Good Feel movie to watch. Very few out there....

Nice reaction video. Rocky was the surprise #1 movie in America in 76. Sylvester Stalone wrote the screenplay and held out to play the lead role. The director of this film also directed 1984 Karate Kid another feel good surprise hit. You should react to that too. Cheers

Rocky was a great movie, and it wasn't a boxing or a sports movie at all. It was a love story. If you haven't seen the rest of the franchise my advice is to stop here! As a stand alone movie this beat 'Network' for best picture of the year 1976.

If you think, as a student of film, you enjoyed the craft that went into this film then you will most definitely enjoy Rocky II (1979). That's always been my favourite Rocky film. Written and Directed by Sylvester Stallone, he obviously picked up a lot from John G. Avildsen as the style is similar yet (dare I say it) superior, by which I would also judge the script. I know its difficult to imagine a better script than the first, but I think Stallone spent more time than the three and a half days he reportedly took to write the first script, having been inspired by a fight between Muhammed Ali and Chuck Wepner.
Great reaction by the way. I would also like to suggest that, as a film student, you dig a little deeper into the decades, especially to films you think you know that are often referenced, as you felt about Rocky. Go all the way to George Melies even the Lumiere Brothers, don't limit your education. There's no need, film is an art form that has evolved over just 127 years (which is young for an art form). The great thing about now, compared to when I first started learning about film, is that so much of the past of film is just a click or two away.
Have you seen Hitchcock's films, for instance? Psycho, Dial M for Murder, Strangers on the Train, Vertigo... the list goes on. I don't see any reactions to Hitchcock films on your channel. You will love Hitchcock films if you've not already seen them, as a student of film. Take it from me.

Rocky 2 if phenomenal... and if your not interested enough with the whole franchise including I think 8 films, please at least watch Rocky 2. it actually gives a PERFECT wrap up.

Nice job. No one expects to like Rocky as much as they do. Especially women, they all write it off as a testosterone movie.
It's nice to see it surprise you too, for completely different reasons. It is beautifully shot with an underated screenplay. This movie would redefine what a movie with "heart" was.
Every filmmaker and screenplay writer wanted to create another character as easy to love as Rocky.
In the big picture, looking back on an entire career, Stallone was never really given the respect he probably deserved.
Jaws maybe created the sequel to hunt down more dollars. Rocky showed sequels could have merit and heart and even maybe be better as they progressed.

Great reaction! Nice to see you back on YT Ryan! Check out: COPPOLA / S.E. Hinton tip: "The Outsiders": Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Based on a book by S.E. Hinton, not many know is a woman. Also Wrote "Rumble Fish" another great movie filmed by Coppola. (Also noticed "W Gibson" on the shelf - great authour - great at building texture. Well beside inventing "Cyberspace"...)
Just an FYI, I know a lot of people are going to elevate the rest of the Rocky movies but just a warning to be ready for the cheese to start making its way into the picture. Not so bad in "II" but after that it might be an eye sore. (edit: just some corny Hollywood fluff and queasy moments)

Great reaction to Rocky. Stallone is such a good, but underated, writer. Every character always felt completely authentic to. me, then and now.
Some other great, unique "Sports" movies, that really aren't, that I would highly recommend are:

Seabiscuit (2003) Gary Ross.

The director or this film is the same director of The Karate Kid. Avildsen was good. The second Rocky film was directed by Stallone, as well as all the others. The second one is also very good. The others are decent.
Stallone didn't direct 5; Avildsen has the distinction of having directed the best and worst installments. Stallone wrote the scripts for all 6 Rocky films, though.
I don't know if you've seen the Bourne identity, but I felt the same way about not wanting to watch the Bourne because at the time I didn't like Matt Damon cause he was the flavor of the month at the time, but of course it turned out to be an awesome movie. You've probably seen it, but if not, you've gotta check out the Bourne identity. Yeah. Peace

Rocky was written by Sylvester Stallone. He was offered a lot of money several times for the script, but he would only sell the script under the condition that he played the lead, several turned him down. Keep in mind he was dirt poor at the time and a complete unknown as an actor
This film would not be made today when Rocky has Adrian cornered by the door. It would be considered date rape. Moral was difference back then for better or worse.
