I love how Forza Horizon 4 payed homage to PGR and you have a mission where you need to get as many Kudos as possible in Edinburgh.
On a track based off of the one from pgr2
They need to get playground to make a PGR5.

This was my first Xbox game and I had a lot of fond memories playing it.
Interesting how the loading screen shows the Controller S instead of the Duke, since the S model was only available in Japan at launch. I'm guessing they must have changed the image for the greatest hits re-release because the S was the standard Xbox controller by that point.
It shows the S controller even on the original release, which I have.
They knew it already that the Duke sucks and S is the good controller 😀

PGR3 was gaming bliss. I put so many hours into that. I used to use the 360's play your own music feature, put on a few albums and just race online for hours on end.
My dude... the nostalgia, i cant.
One cool thing that not a lot of people know about in this game, if you use the cinematic camera and angle the car to where you can see behind the wheels, you can see the brake calipers engage to the rotor...wicked cool detail.

You gotta admire the small details in video games like this. If you choose American license plates, almost all the cars are LHD, but if you pick London or Japan license plate, almost all the cars have RHD.
I remember this game. I had lots of fun powersliding around through cones.
I especially love the soundtrack, with a lot of techno Electronica and rock. I think I remember hearing Saliva's Click Click Boom, which was also in Test Drive 2002.

Oh God I just completed Test Drive 2002 for the first time recently. Such a jank game, but I love how much it oozes 2000s music and the later stages got pretty intense. I had fun with it
I don't think this series gets the praise it deserves. You won't regret playing the sequels

It was never that good.. but I enjoyed it as a kid because it was one of like 15 games availible at launch!:)
I like the Kudos system, it's a nice chance of pace from just hitting first place.
Which has been copied by almost every single racing game later (NFS UG1&2, Street Racing Syndicate, even Bizarre's own Blur)
Can't wait for you to play PGR2, i remember the showroom part the most where you could walk around this showroom building and test drive all of the cars.

Loved MSR back in the day. Cars had minor customisation, like tinted windows and paint jobs, and it was quite possibly one of the first games ever to give you customisable registration plates!
Even a standard Xbox would show 50,000+ blocks free, if you hadn't filled the HDD up with too much.
I think reviewing The Getaway would give you a different perspective on the first GTA clones. Great vid btw
I love Kudos system. It gives an incentive to drive more aggressively.
To me, the way kudos were handled in the original PGR is what should be the standard in not just racing games, but video games as a whole.
Without being a blatant " fuck you " to the player, the difficulty curve should make you go take advantage of all the mechanics and reward you for doing it. There is nothing more entertaining in a video game than when experienced players are pitted against eachother and makes the game very intense.

Man it's criminal Xbox One/Series X backward compatibility never got a single Project Gotham Racing game. This game in particular is what I wanted because I played it back in the day and I have such fond memories of it

I'm a massive fan of the PGR series (+MSR). The gameplay format turns what would have been a good (but forgettable) driving game into one of the most fun, replayable racers I can remember. There's something so rewarding about showing off your driving skills as well as speed, and the handling model matches the intentions of the game perfectly. I've also got to give a shout out to the graphics - all the games looked amazing for the time and still don't look too bad, they've definitely aged a lot better than other 6th Gen games (looking at you, NFS:MW).
If I was to pick my favourite from the series it would have to be either PGR2 or 3, but they're all brilliant. PGR4 added bikes and a load more classic cars but it took away some cool features from 3 and (to me) it kinda felt like it took itself a little more seriously than the rest.
I'd also really encourage you to give Blur (2010) a go. It was Bizarre Creations' first and last game for Activision, after which they closed and a lot of the team now work on the Forza Horizon games. It was kind of a commercial flop (because Activion _bizarrely_ released it in May) but it was the perfect crossover between PGR and Mario Kart. As weird as that sounds it's definitely worth a go.
I think Blur's issue was Split/Second (just like how Split/Second's issue was Blur :D )
Man what a weird coincidence! Since around Christmas, you've happened to cover three games I picked up during that time, Forza Motorsport, NFS Carbon and now Project Gotham Racing! I guess it's because I bought myself an original Xbox as my Christmas present so there you go. You really go into a lot of depth with your reviews and it's cool to see someone analysing these classic racing games, as not really any other channels do. As another racing game fan from Australia, I salute you.
Boy are you in for a damn treat when you get around to playing Project Gotham Racing 2.
That game is a straight up masterpiece of arcade racing. The soundtrack is amazing, there's more locations and they're highly detailed, and the variety of events, tracks and cars is truly impressive. I've completed it and re-completed it several times over the years and it's something I just keep coming back to. I never have been able to fully complete the Kudos World Series on Platinum difficulty, but one day I'll get there.
Unfortunately it's difficult to play the multiplayer these days, but back in the day on Xbox Live it was incredibly enjoyable, and there were DLC packs available for it too that added new cars and tracks.
I believe PGR2 also suffers from slow-down on the Xbox 360. I personally have a soft-modded original Xbox that I use and while the game tends to look a bit soft in the 480i widescreen mode, having access to 480p cleans it up a little bit (my console is a PAL console that I've flashed to the NTSC EEPROM to get higher resolution options and 60 Hz).
The music tracks probably mean these games won't come to backwards compatibility on the Xbox One, but I'd love it if they did. Playing these at 1080p/60 would be exceptional, along with games like RalliSport Challenge 2, OutRun 2006 and Need For Speed Underground 2.
Best in the series? I don't know, it was a chore to play. 1, 3, and 4, were masterpieces however.

Two things a really loved about this game. You can just drive around open world without restriction and you could load your own MP3's through the radio. Have good memories of blasting round Tokyo playing Voodoo People.

I got it for 5 bucks on ps2 and it aged pretty well, just wish it got more recognized.
I live inside your house I remember being in my junior year of HS sitting in class, a friend in front of me sneaked out a game magazine as the teacher bored us, and as i peeked around over his shoulder i see an article or i think an ad for Mercenaries. I said to him "woaah hold on let me see that" and after reading about it i fell in love on the spot. After picking it on day one, that love cemented itself more. A completely underrated game, more so that its' sequel wasn't up to par. It was easily one of my personal favorites on the PS2.
@@pedrochevez2090 Mercenaries PoD is probably one of my top 10 favorite games of all time! Too many modern open world/3rd person shooter games rely on boring cover systems, Mercenaries encouraged a great run-n-gun style with it's extra slow projectiles, made you feel like Neo in the Matrix dodging fire.

I remember that game from a GamePro magazine in 2001. then I played it. PGR didn't make me want the original Xbox but I did enjoy playing it a lot.
I bought an Xbox recently mainly to play this. (well among other things as well) but man, this game is such a step up from MSR. It's very fun and easy to play. It starts you right out as well. It's so refreshing compared to modern racing titles now.

I started gaming around 5 which consisted mostly watching my badass aunts shred nes games. Zelda, Tetris, Mike Tyson punchout, star tropics, and Mario was some of my fav gaming moments ever. Watching my aunt crush Wizards and Dragons was a treat,

You earn extra credits if you
-Power slides(Drift)
-Overtake CPU opponets(Overtake)
-Jump high and land on 4 wheels(Jump)
-Drive on 2 wheels(2 wheels)
If you make tricks two or more in row they go multiply.
But you can lose them if you
-Damage your car(Driving error)
-Blew a tyres(Blown tyre)
-Crash into CPU Opponets(No fair)
-Make Shortcuts(Shortcut)

This is why I love it. The skills I learned from the PGR Series also helped me in the Forza Horizon and other racing games.
Project Gotham Racing will always be the one game that got me hooked on console racing. A true legend.
when he made the statement about how it's like NFS but without the flashy effects NFS itself has, I realize this game to me looks and seems like a game that looks very similar to the Gran Turismo series, but plays like NFS itself. A very interesting combo I must say

Wow. I haven't played this or its sequel since high school. I have a very vague memory of this game, as I didn't play it a whole lot and it was one of the first Xbox games I had ever bought.
PGR4 was my favourite game as a kid. i just had the demo on my xbox 360 and it’s one of my earliest memories, one birthday my grandma got me the full game and it was the first game i beat. Nowadays i prefer gran turismo but ill always live PGR.

This game was great.
I had like 2 racing games, RallySport Challenge, and this game.
The controls were tight, driving is smooth, and the graphics were amazing, it makes you feel like you are driving these exotic cars in a city that is very real.
I prefer this PGR over it's successor, it was such a chore to play that I went back to the first game, still an awesome game, but Rallisport 2 was and still is the pinnacle of Xbox racing games.
I played the heck of this game back then I loved it.
I remember I played project gothem as a demo at was use to be a sears. Man it was something so smooth and fresh at the time. I wanted an Xbox so bad but was to broke. I was 7 or 8 at the time
Great review & i loved this series. 2 & 4 were the best. MSR, 1 & 3 felt like the same game updated but still good.

PGR 2 is my favorite racing game.. I had hours of play in it. I just bought PGR 1, more so to add to my collection but I can’t wait to beat it.
PGR 1 is my favorite game in the series because of nostalgia and the sense of progression. The later games are good but helped start the trend of getting a hypercar in the first couple hours, which I really dislike.
Unfortunately my original Xbox broke and this game runs at half speed on the 360

PGR 2 next! The best in the series.
I loved PGR. It was something different from e rest of the pack, and just what Xbox needed to be different to announce Xbox's arrival.

I only played 3 and 4, since I never owned an original Xbox, nor did I know at the time they were backwards compatible with the 360. Still, it would be nice if they were backwards compatible with the Xbox One or even the next Xbox console whenever it comes out. The closest we have to a PGR type game these days is DriveClub on the PS4, which is a pretty good game despite a disappointing launch, but it isn't really street racing. Still better than nothing though!
Project Gotham racing 2 was my game back then on the OG Xbox. I was practically unbeatable

I grew up playing Pgr2 and I love it, I never owned the first one and this is the first time I've actually seen it. Pgr1 looks ok but not really interesting outside of the box art w one of my favorite cars 😁

It was a rerelease of the Dreamcast game Metropolis Street Racer.
Wow, this is one of the few games that looks as good as I remember. Usually these old games look like shit when you go back and check them out.
I always preferred this to it's sequels,felt like it had more variety with the track surfaces like on some of the London tracks it had gravel and normal road surfaces,or san fran Cisco you would have really tight corners after drving up or down a verticle hill.Also lots of handbrake turning around tight corners.Lots of fun to play if you stick with it.

This game was a refreshing change from the need for speed suckiness that dominated consoles at the time.
PGR2 is a huge step up from the first one, although the subsequent releases were steps back in my opinion.
PGR2 remains one of my favorite racing games and I still have a 100% completion along with my original console.
technically speaking PGR3 was the best

my 1st online PGR memory was racing 2 old british men in B class cars
they both picked the RUF in B class and i went for a murcielago LP640 and i *fucking RAPED them* and they got genuinely butthurt and called me a cheater
they went as far as to say "you must have cheated and picked an A class car"
when they learned i was in the same class car AND it was my 1st online experience ever they both ragequit AND blocked my gamertag XD
Didn't care for the physics change in that game, but the other things were nice.
PGR2 had a better soundtrack though.
Wow the game has aged much better than I thought it would have! I remember sleep overs at my buddies house, him passed out and me sitting there retrying over and over until 7am for those gold medals on the hardest settings, "I .. CAN.. DO.. THIS.." =D
PGR 3 has got to be one of the best racing games ever made! Content wise maybe not, but the arcade driving physics are spot on!
You should review Driver San Francisco, the most underestimated racing game in my opinion.

I was expecting Forza Motorsport 3 and not the other xbox racer. But definitely not disappointed. Is FM3 on your list though?
Been playing it on the original Xbox (it still gives that 50,000+ message you got, that’s normal) with The Duke controller and I like the button and triggers fine but the other four buttons are a but of a pain to keep track of and reach during gameplay. I have a heck of a time switching the view in the default control scheme. 😂

I played the heck out of this game. I think I earned somewhere around 280k-290k kudos in total, I believe... Also, if you can pass the entire career mode without a single bronze medal, you unlock a hidden 13th round, where all you do is street races against F50's and Carrera GT's. Ever wondered why those two cars never appeared as the opponents anywhere in the game? Well, there's why.
Test Drive on PS2 was great. This however it more likey advanced at its own time. Still looks perfect wise into today's gaming graphics.
I hate the Fact that this series was discontinue :( But I guess with Forza games there won't be another one but these games were always fun one of my favorite from my childhood

This IS the greatest racing game of the 6th generation. The sequel is even better. Please review it or even just play it. I loved these games so much that my original Xbox Live name was “PGR x Mason”
