Love how they acknowledged how DBZ helped Toonami gained traction.
Not just Toonami either - DBZ was basically the reason anime became popular in the west.
@@andyholstein237Along with Sailor Moon and Pokémon.
Gundam, Sailor Moon, and DBZ are the big 3 that introduced many to anime
You got that right... DBZ, Sailor Moon and the Mobile Suit Gundam Franchise. RIP Toriyama-san.
Toonami's original commercials actually referred to DBZ as "the greatest cartoon ever made".
Hilariously, they also advertised Captain Planet as "the worst cartoon ever made" - all while showing both shows in their line up!
One of the reasons I loved CN and Toonami.
I love how not only did they pay respect to Akira Toriyama but also acknowledged that if it wasn't for him and DBZ, Adult-Swim wouldn't be as popular as they are today
Ain’t that the truth thanks to toonami I grew up with the franchise since I was 9
More like Cartoon Network and Toonami, the Adult Swim block gained popularity with Family Guy, Futurama, Cowboy Bebop, Inu Yasha, Aqua Teen and Robot Chicken.
You mean Toonami right? ATHF made Adult Swim
So many dubs. Even the bad ones like ocean after frieza or big green Malaysian have a special place in my heart.
Toonami wouldn't be as popular. Adult Swim itself would probably still be fine. Although Toonami is better than normal AS imo
For those who weren't around at the time, when Toonami first aired, it was a random mishmash of old cartoons and random animes. You had some consistent like ThunderCats and robotech showed up pretty regularly. But they were constantly cycling through shows hoping to land on something that sticks.
Then, by chance, they picked up DBZ and their ratings skyrocketed. There were times when the entire 2 hour block was just four episodes of dragon ball. Two episodes of original and two episodes of dbz.
Years and years later, when dragon ball was still popular, but no longer the monumental show it had been, they were still airing the episodes.
Rest in peace, Mr. Toriyama. Thank you for everything.
Don’t forget that they got yu yu hakishow as well. And zoids
Good days
I lived to see toonami from 2000 to 2002. Missed out on the rest of toonamis years from 2003 to 2008 due to my parents struggling to pay for satellite tv.
I remember that!
Only the real OGs remember the “Afternoon Adventures” block. ….. it wasn’t that good. Thank goodness for Toonami/DBZ.

Will never, ever forget growing up in Florida, watching Dragon Ball and Toonami just religiously. Doing push-ups and sit-ups in my bedroom, training alongside Goku, Krillin and the gang, trying to get stronger right alongside them. Memories that shaped my future and formed a love affair for a franchise that will never lose its appeal to me. I was 10 years old back then. I’m 33 now. I will always be so grateful for everything that Toriyama gifted to the worlds of ingenuity, entertainment, and fun.
what does being a goofy Florida man have to do with anything
Glad u enjoyed
I was doing the same. Worked out from being bullied, ended up wrestling in high school, gained the strength to forge my path in life.

Nice to see Tom and Sara of Toonami pay their respects to Akira Toriyama, especially since Dragonball Z was an important part of Toonami's popularity. Akira Toriyama will be missed and never be forgotten.

Toonami is how I was introduced to Dragonball Z. I didn’t care for it at first but there wasn’t anything else to watch at the time. Watched a couple episodes of the Frieza fight that day and I was hooked. R.I.P. Toriyama, take your time walking Snake Way
Same was my introduction too

Having TOM and Sara pay tribute to Toriyama almost makes me want to cry. 9 years ago, I remember watching DBZ Kai on Toonami every week until it became routine. This was perfect. R.I.P. Toriyama, you will forever be missed.

The Dragon Ball is an important part of Toonami history so this broadcast was all the more special
Happy 27th anniversary Toonami and RIP Akira Toriyama
Rest In Peace Akria.
Toonami has immense class for this. Short, sweet, crediting his work for making them as beloved as they were.
For some reason, hearing TOM and SARA speak so respectfully about Akira Toriyama made me tear up. RIP Toriyama-sensei 🙏
I was never a fan of Dragon Ball Z, but I always respected the appeal and thrill of the franchise. Akira Toriyama was an icon to anime and fans all over the world. He will be missed and his legacy will live on
Same.
Not everyone has to be a fan of the world he gave us.
But it means a lot that those same people can still admit that he will be missed.
@@STH151NicoleFan As I said, I never liked it really, but I always understood why people do. There were parts I did like and of it weren't for Dragon Ball Z, some of my favorite anime might never have existed. I'll always be grateful to Toriyama-san for that

RIP to the legendary Akira Toriyama himself. Anime would not have been this popular without his contribution as well.
Rest in peace akira toriyama thank you toonami for all amazing memories dragon ball z will go as best anime in usa
Exactly. DBZ had a huge impact on Cartoon Network.
God that does take me back. Toonami is where I first encountered Dragon Ball Z.
I'm glad they're paying respect to the man who made that possible.
It’s so Generous for Toonami to pay Respects & Tribute to our Best Manga Creator, Akira Toriyama. I really am gonna miss him so much! Not only he created every Dragon Ball Manga, but the Anime was so Badass, too! I mean really Dragon Ball Z was the main reason why I got into it. So in order for me to Honor him is to continue to love his work until my Life Journey is complete. Rest In Peace, Old Friend. Thank you for granting our Wishes! Thank you for everything.
Well, TOM said it best. In 1998, Dragon Ball Z was the reason Toonami became a house hold name, as well as a channel that everyone watches. Even today. Of course they would honor him. It would be an insult not to do so.
Toonami was good when I was a little kid I never watched
He made other stuff
@@tristanpadilla1455 True, but Dragon Ball is arguably his most famous work.
It also on their 27th anniversary so it make it all the more special
DBZ will always have a special trophy case in my heart. The trophy on the inside embodies all the screaming that went on in the series itself.
Fly high, dragon master. Without you and Dragon Ball, Toonami would never go on for many more years. Until we meet again. ❤ 🙏🏽
Wooow what a great tribute…and once again Rest in Peace Toriyama Sensei !
I didn’t know toonami was still around. Every time I think of Dragonball Z, I always remember Toonami. Ahhh the good old days.
Thank you Akira Toriyama 🙏
They brought it back over a decade ago on Adult Swim.
Akira Toriyama's influence has transcended manga and anime. He's possibly become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century; eclipsed only maybe by Disney and George Lucas.
And Disney and the Star Wars brand has fell tremendously while DBZ keeps growing 🫢

It's crazy when you think about how much of our current media awareness has been shaped by Dragon Ball.
Not really.
I love how he called Toriyama “Toriyama-san”, and *correctly* pronounced it
Goku: he was the greatest to all of us
Tom: *pats Goku's back* I'm sorry, old friend, you're always welcome to Toonami
Goku: thx Tom
Goku: "Shenron, can you bring him back? It's about someone very important whom we might have already known for so long. A very good friend.".
Shenron: "I see. However, that is beyond my power.".
Goku: "What?! Why?! He has already gone just once, not twice.".
Shenron: "Because, Goku, he still lives. He still lives with us. He still lives among all of us. He still lives in every person who loves him and whom he loves.".
A friend: "What is it, Goku? Is something wrong?".
Goku: "It's nothing. Thank you for being here.".
A friend: "Anytime, my friend. It has always been an honour to live and work alongside you.".
Shenron: "Is there anything else that you want to wish for?".
Goku: "Nothing, except that I wish that I could never forget about everything that he had already done for us and for everyone in this world.".
Shenron: "Very well. It is my wish as well.".
Goku: "Yes, Shenron. It is also our wish. Everyone's wish. Please grant them that kind of wish. To everyone who loves him, whom he loves, who needs him, whom he needs, who never wants to forget about everything that he has done for them and us all, and whom he never wants to forget for everything that they have done for him.".
Shenron: "Very well, my friend. This wish is granted. To everyone. For everyone.".
Goku: "Hey, buddy. Do you still want to go?".
A friend: "I am not going anywhere, Goku. I will always be with you and with everyone else who needs me, everywhere, every time, no matter what. Thank you, Goku, for being my greatest friend.".
Goku: "Thank you, my fellow greatest friend. I will never go anywhere away from you as well. I will never forget you for everything that you have already done for me and everyone in this world.".
Shenron: "Now is the time. I have to go. The dragon balls must go to every point in this world until the day when they can be used again for greater goods. Farewell, Goku, and you too, our greatest friend. We will never forget everything that you have already done for us. May we meet again in a better place.".

I truly respect that Toonami did this for Akira Toriyama. They could’ve easily just said something small about the creator, but they went the extra mile just for him. The fact they called Dragon Ball their rock shows just how much his creation means to them. What a wonderful tribute

My mom never paid much attention to what my sisters and I were into as kids. She knew our likes at the time, but as we switched between phases, she'd forget the older things.
The other day, I mentioned Toriyama's passing. Of course, she had no idea who that was. When I told her, "He created Dragonball," she actually got sad! She still remembers how hugely into DBZ we were and what an impact it had on us growing up. It was so influential that even my mom has fond memories of DBZ, despite never watching a single episode. After 20 years, it is still a strong memory for all of us.
Thank you for making up a significant part of my best childhood memories, Toriyama-sensei. And thank you, Toonami, for bringing that goodness to us.
Thank you for uploading this. Toriyama was the greatest. Thank you, Akira Toriyama-san for everything you created

This is why I’ve always freakin’ loved Toonami. Much respect 🙏🩷
Being 30, and watching dbz in 98 took the states by storm. Late 90s early 2000s toonami was pure gold. Sailor moon, samurai jack, gundam. Dbz, Dexter's lab to name a few.
It’s moments like this that makes toonami feel alive
Wait... Toonami is still on the air? I used to watch that show/spotlight back in 1998 and onward for 5 years. I never knew it was still runing over 20 years later.
My first toonami show was dbz, frieza saga, then toonami was my to go to ever since. This was so painful and emotional to watch, but we all knew this day would come, RIP Legend.
Was waiting for this video! Thanks Tom Thanks Toonami! Rip Toriy!!!
I agree with TOM. Losing one of the greatest manga and anime creators of all time really sucks. I’m also bummed that they didn’t even pay tribute to Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of Yu-Gi-Oh!
well when you realise there airing the terrible kai episodes instead of the original dragon ball you see how little they care getting rights to stuff is hard especially on short notice like death of content creator but im sure they could have tried better
Yugioh was never on cartoon network. So why would they? Yugioh and Yugioh Gx was on abc on Saturday mornings when I was a kid in the 00s. ABC kids on Saturday was basically Disney for kids with no cable. They had disney shows on basic cable in the mornings. Cartoon Network had toonami on weekend nights which had anime shows like dbz, db gt, Naruto (like before shippuden. I remember when it first aired and seeing the zabuza/haku arc as an 8 year old), inuyasha , etc.

Akira Toriyama has played a huge part of my brother’s childhood and my own. I haven’t watched much Dragonball Z but I did watch the bits and pieces that made the series interesting and meaningful.
Toriyama-San has always been a hero to those watching and reading his creations.
