Re: Chapter 4 - The 16th Duke of Norfolk, Bernard Marmaduke Fitzalan-Howard - I knew nothing about His Grace or the family's extraordinary history until watching your exquisite video. However, I do have a few short questions: 1) Who wrote this brilliant piece? 2) Who eloquently narrated it? 3) If Bernard was only 9 years old when obtaining the titles *16th Duke of Norfolk & Earl Marshal*, who was his "regent" before he came of age (18)?

Fascinating - many thanks! (Presumably, the family background of Henry Arundel played absolutely no role in his apparently seamless move into private equity?!!)
Queen Elizabeth I and Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk were 2nd cousins as they shared great grandparents. Now Nobles and royals are more likely to marry 2nd or even first cousins, but unknowingly so many people's ancestors married 6th+ cousins, and we'd never know because the shared DNA is very likely to be zero. There's an idea all Europeans share the exact same direct ancestors, this is based on the number of ancestors required being so high, but every cousin marriage duplicates ancestors, so in a thousand years how many times do 6th+ cousins marry? The answer is a whole lot. So we get groups of people called the Franks or the Anglo-Saxons or the ancient British, not a generalized European DNA group, and this continued on into the modern groups usually based on nation-states. Groups of people in an area for hundreds even thousands of years, knowingly or unknowingly marrying close or distant cousins. Happenes/happens everywhere on the planet.
Interesting documentary regarding British royal and non-royal history. 1 question and 1 complaint: 1) Is the reason for their current (non-royal) status due to Katherine Howard's 'fall from grace' so many centuries, ago? In other words did that one situation effectively knock the rest of her family out of the good graces of the royal household for centuries to come? 2) I think your description box is far too extensive. Most creators that I have watched stick to writing short, brief descriptions IN the description box. Sometimes they will link videos below or give source credit for music, other referenced videos, and / or film, pictures or photos of other displayed material. Not a criticsm. Just a suggestion.
@@phantomopera5525 This family has had a real problem producing male heirs. I think the current Duke’s father was some cousin of Bernard Marmaduke. The heir apparent is young, so there’s still time for a boy to arrive. But do they want seven children trying? A question I have concerns the entail of the property. As I read the law of entail was abolished in 1925, but some great families have managed to keep the property attached to the title. How do they do it? Thanks.
If there are no more heirs in the male line, the title becomes extinct. They can petition King Charles to change their letters patent to allow females to inherit. Their husbands get the title. Most titles are males only, some do allow females to inherit.

If the actual Earl has "only" daughters, the title will pass to the next male in the succession, because of the salic law of succession of the British aristocracy
Which aristocratic British family would you like us to feature next on this channel?
Can you do the family of Fitzjames Stuart,
Maitland.
The Earls & Duke's of Sutherland.. please
Particularly the 2nd Duke & how his 10 daughter's turbo charged the families influence on British nobility
The Dukes and Earls of Portland then the Dukes of Bedford
Let's go to the seamier side. How about a video on Alexander Charles David Drogo Montagu, 13th Duke of Manchester?
It is an interesting historical documentation. Thank you so much.

On fact they have a better claim to the throne than the Mountbatten -Windsors. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
They are also linked to Edward 1st through the Thomas of Brotherton branch

25 titles in that family .
Actually the Howard family was relatively to the Edward iii
Don't let the Prime Minister and the Government hear that. The PM rules the Country whereas the King reigns
And does it very badly. I think the king would do it better.
Does the heir continue to be, nominally at least, Roman Catholic?
Yes
@@oldmoneyluxury Good to know. Whatever one thinks of religion it’s a splendid historical anomaly that the greatest peer in England is RC.
The current Duke's granddaughters are ineligible to inherit any of the titles, right? Do they have male cousins?

I think it's an abomination that women are barred from inheriting. In a democracy. It boggles the mind.
Sir John Howard 1st Duke of Norfolk is my 14th Great Grandfather. I enjoyed this video. Cheers!
Very cool!
Lord Wemyss?
As there are now only daughters in line for the title will the inheritence go to a male relative outside the immediate family.?
