Why not just try and keep yourself as close to roads as practicable? You now have good landmarks fo navigation and a place to set down in an emergency.
Don't land near cattle. There will be small deep halls in the ground made by their hoofs. Also, depending on your altitude, look for access roads, buildings and other human activities which might help with how quickly you can get help and how to recover the broken airplane. Not much point in landing on a long field away from the houses. That short distance from the air can be a 10-15 minute walk back.
