Who am I?
I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 16 years and been singing since I was 17. I teach from my own studio and via Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. Avril sings with her heart and emotion. Ariana sings with her excellent technique. They are both great in their own way, but I prefer Avril because she sounds more real and pure to me.
Avril Lavigne sings completely without heart and emotion. She also looks dead eyed and bored when she's performing.

Avril lavigne all the way. She feels every song she writes and sings. I feel the chills every time. Ariana is an incredible performer. Emotions? not so much.

Sam Zhang i can agree diction never been strong side of Ari even on her Broadway days. Anyways it's more stylistic choice. If you watch her performance with Barbra or last " You don't own me" cover it's better than on her hit songs. I think in terms of technique Ariana's a bit better. Avril has better diction, but overral Ariana wins. According this video it's very close battle.

Avril's technique is better. she resonates sound higher in the face and doesn't use her throat to sing like Ariana. She also widens her mouth to let out bigger sound. She also can access head voice. Something Ariana cannot do. Ariana uses falsetto instead.

I think I prefer Avril just because I like her sound more. Avril does have a great range too, but to me it’s more about what you do with the range you have than simply how big your range is.

@@exiles4527 sweetheart, what about the rest of her music? The only "honest songs" Ariana has are Ghostin, Needy, In My Head, My Everything. The rest is pop generic and trying but failing to succeed at going toward different genres. Avril has done pop, pop rock, punk rock, rock, power ballads, pop ballads, jazz, r&b, soul, country, country-rock, rock ballad, country-pop, etc,. And all of her songs are gorgeous and honest and she brings that emotional factor that Ariana fails at delivering. Also the fact that, sure Ariana may have died in Manchester, but Avril spent a full year in bed, waiting for her death day to come, wondering if she would ever be able to put her head above water, begging God to give her a chance, she barely had enough strength to pick up the pen and write her music.

I don’t think one is better than the other. They have such different styles and techniques. Avril enunciates sooo much more and thats always more appealing to myself. Ariana has amazing range but I just prefer the rawness of Avril.

These are the best clips I've ever heard from Avril! I'm shocked! I do think Ariana is a better vocalist and has better technique but Avril reminds me of my childhood and has a lot of heart in her singing. Very haunting voice at times.

Both are really good singers, but I prefer Avril Lavigne for numerous reasons. She sings with her heart and soul. I can really feel what she says through every note she sings, and that really captures my attention. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pop or a rock song. Technically, Avril uses more her mid and high registers and has a unique style of singing, which I find more interesting than just showing off what you can do with your voice. Of course this is only my appreciation. Don’t get me wrong. Both are really good singers in their own styles.

Avril bring me more emotions than that version of Ariana (2013-2017)... I prefer her music all the way if we ignore TUN. Ariana's vocals may be superior (4 octaves and her signature is high belting) but Avril can do whatever she wants with her voice changing the style of her songs without sounding like a different person or losing the emotions.

I absolutely love Avril and I've been waiting for more videos with her but this battle is not gonna be fair, to be honest xD I'm sure Ariana's gonna win but for me Avril's the winner. I think she's way too underrated, where I feel that Ariana is overrated. I respect her, of course, and I think she's talended, just her music doesn't speak to me anymore.

When it comes to my personal taste I would always go with Avril Lavigne. I mean.. I grew up with her music. I love her voice, it touches me differently.
On every song she sings there is true emotion and you get that emotion and that is what pulls the strings for me.

It's one of those times when you hear a vocally deft singer but their voice doesn't speak to your soul or give you goosebumps but on the other hand there's this singer whose voice is slightly less powerful than the other artist but she can make you fall in love with her. My personal preference is Avril.

It’s hard to compare those two because of the different singing styles. Arianna likes to show off and use her voice to full potential while Avril likes to sing for fun and be more chill about how and what she sings. Arianna is like that one theater kid and Avril is the one who can sing who is always in the back of the choir, if you know what I mean by those references.

Ariana's a great singer, don't get me wrong but her music doesn't speak to me the way Avril's does. Pop punk is what Avril really believed in since the beginning and she's emoted beautifully through it. It's not about technicality always, it's sometimes about the emotion and that's where I'll gravitate, more than trills and tricks because that's what singing is about. It's about escaping, believing and emoting.
Avril will always be my number one! You can hear the emotion in her voice when she sings.

IMO, Avril is better vocally as her pronunciation is way better and she could sing wider genres of music, back to back, without losing any breath, even on live shows/concert. Ariana has very good, bigger vocals than Avril but that's about it.

Does it not sound like Ariana is doing the same thing for each one? The same run, same note, etc. I prefer Avril’s tone, music, lyrics, vocals, and Avril can hold a note longer.
