  • Today, we're looking back on Toucan Sam's longstanding career as the mascot for Kellogg's Froot Loops, appearing on boxes and in commercials since the cereal's debut in 1963. We'll cover his debut, his nephews, his adventures in search of Black Beak's treasure, and of course...the dreaded 2020 redesign!

    I honestly like how the internet redesigned the character. Ive seen examples of them making Sam really nice while keeping the main parts of him such as the beak colors all the while rounding out some parts of his body. Its way better than the annoying gradient and the pepa pig esk mouth part he got going on in the official redesign

    You know I always thought it was interesting how Toucan Sam and his nephews seemed to be influenced by the Donald Duck adventure comics. Seriously, Toucan Sam and the boys could have a knock off cartoon similar to Ducktales.

  • @mightyfilm
    @mightyfilm Před 4 lety +125

    They'll totally change him back at some point. They usually do with these kinds of things. General Mills' redesigns lasted just over a year before completely backtracking. Unless a mascot is phased out completely, they always revert back to some form of their original version. That said, Sam's redesign seems somehow 5-10 years out of date looking. How do I put this? He looks like a Canadian cartoon trying to ape a European cartoon trying to ape anime, with less understanding of each country before it. And he has an unnerving Mr. Sparkle vibe when he's not animated. Personally, I hate more what they did to Chester Cheetah. Not so much the CGI, but the fact he's freaking small and has a British accent out of nowhere. And the weird thing is, the only commercial that seemed to get what the character was about in recent years was the KFC Cheetos Chicken Sandwich commercial.

    • @robbiewalker2831
      @robbiewalker2831 Před 4 lety +6

      I don’t mind the British accent, but I do understand the height problem. Cheetahs are Big Cats! Why the small stature for Chester?

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 4 lety +7

      I can only reply with an obvious "You're asking ME?!?!?" It's like, we can believe a carnivorous jungle cat can stand upright, speak human language, wear sunglasses, and consume human junk foods, but being as big as or bigger than a human is where they draw the line at reality bending? I don't mind the accent either, and I think later commercials they actually get the character, rather than as a prankster that willfully wastes his own product. I can fully accept the "It's not easy being cheesy, Ayeayeayeayeayeayeayeaye" phase of his character was left in the early 90's, but when he just throws his own Cheetos snacks up someone's butt (it really happened and it's a real commercial), that's just baffling. I'm glad they at least changed that to some extent.

      @@mightyfilm Yes, I was actually talking to you. I think the prankster thing would’ve worked more, if they took notes from the David Feiss Cheetos commercials. That version of Chester is my favorite, because his exterior shows off a cool guy type of vibe (same with the voice), but his interior shows a crazy cat messing with the world surrounding him, mostly with Chachi. The commercials in the late 90s give off that same vibe, mostly through Cheeto heists, Game Show contenting, and melting someone’s Ice Scupture with fire breath after eating Flaming Hot Cheetos. I like that type of Chester, and wish that if a Chester Cheetah cartoon series wasn’t dropped, I’d love to see the late 90s Chester mess with Mean Eugene.

    • @mightyfilm
      @mightyfilm Před 3 lety +3

      That David Feiss one is my favorite, but then again, I love Cow and Chicken so I have a bias. It sort of reminds me of the original version of the character, where he tried to keep up a cool facade but would go so nuts for the stuff he'd injure himself in cartoonish ways, mixed with his more late 90's more collected personality. They seem to have kept the CGI Chester, but they use him in the commercials less and less. Even though they were close to giving him something more along the lines of his late 90's version, at least in terms of his role in the ads. Still, I never see anything that looks close to that on the bags of Cheetos.

I say this with confidence because he has this air of genuineness, generosity, and kindness about him that certain other cereal mascots lack. Given I am old enough to remember when there was only 3 froot flavors of one of my favorite cereals, I am very disturbed that Toucan Same was redesigned. He is absolutely fugly looking and yes Kellogg's made a huge mistake making this abomination. This is like New Coke all over again, and I will be bold in my statement. STOP SCREWING WITH ICONIC CHARACTERS!

      Yes! Keep it simple. We discussed the history of Toucan Sam on a video we just posted. We rank all the Cereal Characters but also give their history-- please watch when you have a moment! Thank you.

    Well yoU Gotta Love Yourself, how would it actually matter what he could look like? You said he had a different design in the beginning, so how would it make sense not to have it again now?

    I didn't even know Toucan Sam got a redesign. The mouth is a little horrifying if you ask me. Plus I'm really not into the whole Gumball/Adventure Time art style.

    Kellogg's is unable to use the word "fruit" for this cereal since there's no real fruit in it.
    YET, generic brands such as Walmart or Kroger DO use the word"fruit" for their versions of the cereal.
    How are they able to when Kellogg's can't ⁉️
