Trading our BROKEN 4th Gen 4Runner For a Nissan Xterra... Is It Worth It?

  • We tried everything we could (short of a frame swap) to fix the 4Runner. But we're making the "smart" decision to cut our losses and pick out something similar, newer and from the south. We decided on a 2014 Nissan Xterra. The Xterra's are reliable, stout and very capable off road. But this one needs a little bit of TLC. Follow along to see updates and trips we take in "Terry" the Xterra!

      I’ve had my 07 Xterra for about 4 years now got it when it had 107,000 miles on it now it has over 150,000 miles haven’t had any major problems with it only expense was a Muffler replacement cause there was a hole cause of good ol rust (Salt belt vehicle) other than that just normal ware and tear fixes as well. Fucking love it though it’s a very unique vehicle I’ve always been a big fan of the look of them cause they’re different they don’t make vehicle that look as unique as the Xterra did. Only down side I’d say would be how the second gens are known for the Strawberry Milkshake of Death (SMOD) 2005-2009 pretty positive those are the years that are known to get that but if change the Radiator before you should be good.

Exclusive of the thirsty optional factory 5.6l it's enjoyable and reliable to drive. The V8 option was available from 08 to 12 to compete with the V8 4Runner. It was an option that's harder to find.

    @elonsus9747 Před rokem +3

    I love this generation of Nissan trucks. Had an 08 Pathfinder with the 4.0 sold it with 190k. But they all had their quirks. The 4.0 is a great engine, but a gas hog. The radiator lines run through the transmission and contaminate it. It makes a strawberry milkshake and kills it. Swapping the radiator will fix this issue, or bypass the lines. The early 4.0’s tensioners would wear and you would hear a whining noise, which was a tell tale sign. It’s a big job to replace it, but you could drive for another 100k and have no problems if you didn’t care to replace them. The Crankshaft position sensors will also go out and you’ll stall or the car will struggle to start. There’s 3 of them. 2 are easy to get to, one isn’t…the heater hose will also burst and you’ll start overheating. The rubber/plastic gets brittle. The rear cup holders…oh you found that out. The rear diffs were known to fail I believe that was mostly on PRO 4X models. I see this is the Nismo version so who knows. The fuel sender also doesn’t read accurate after a while and you’ll have a full tank one day and half when you wake up. I’m exaggerating that. They aren’t bad trucks at all. And are complete bargains compared to Toyotas of the same vintage and then some. Good luck with you new Xterra.

    My Xterra is a 2004 SE purchased. 2005. Engine V6 3.3 Liter, horsepower 180 hp @ 4,800 rpm, Torque 202 lb-ft @ 2,800 rpm. For just under twenty years old this has been an excellent reliable vehicle. Yes, it is still solid, runs quite well. Drove it from the East coast to the West coast in 2.5 days, averaged a hair under 20MPG. All that said, your Gen-2 Xterra should serve you well.

Strong points are price compared to Toyota, strong (but unrefined) motor, very solid and reliable transmission (if you dont get the smod), few changes (which is also a con) so parts are easy to come by.

    that price seems kind of high to pay for that year make and model and miles!!! how has it held up? I been looking at these xterras myself from 2011 to 2013 with under 100,000 miles. I read good and bad things about them. 4runners and Fj cruisers are just to damm expensive used!!!!

      It was a little on the high side, but it was clean and from a dealer. Private party would have been a few grand less for sure. It held up ok! We actually sold it and ended up frame swapping our 4Runner, which was the correct decision. In my opinion, the 4Runners are worth their price (although people will fight me on that one haha). Check out the review I did on the Xterra- I run through some of the issues we had with it, as well as some of the common issues with them. Overall decent SUV’s, but there’s a few things to watch out for

      @NotSoHandyCarGuy right on! Definitely great 👍 insight. I would agree on the 4runner being worth the price of admission but they are ridiculous expensive even with high mileage. It seems like buying a xterra is a gamble, but honestly seems like buying any used vehicle in today's market is like playing Russian roulette 😆 🤣 😂 😹. Glad to hear about your frame restoration working out!!! Trying to buy clean vehicles here in Maryland with no rust is very challenging!!!!!!

      4Runners tend to rust out in the NorthEast , and they have the horrible headers cracking issue that plagues he v6 engines that is shared through the lexus and toyota lineup. Get a newer xterra 2010+, albeit not as fancy as the 4runner, and it will serve you faithfully for 400k miles with regular maintenance and a chain/guides done around 175k miles.
