- Do you get tired of using the same colors?
I used to feel stuck in the same colors.
I kept repeating myself because it worked.
Now I have learned an approach to making any
color work.
In today’s video, I will demonstrate a way to discover new color.
In the video, I give a quick refresher about color harmony.
This is at the root of making any color work with any other color.
Next I share an exercise that almost forces you to create
new colors. As long as you like the first one, you will
probably like the ones that follow!
Thirdly, don’t forget that a super fast way to get
color working is to glaze.
Creating the harmony by mixing paint or glazing over
paint has the same effect.
Try and do a little of both.
And try that exercise! It works!
In the comments below post your
new favorite color combinations!
Enjoy this day.
Nicholas
PS Towards the end of today’s video I show a book I illustrated. I will be
giving this away next week to one of our commenters!

I notice again, you mix white too! I like that. Harmonizing with mother color! Thank you. Appreciate your teaching!
I appreciate how fun and intuitive you make painting look. The way you showed how to harmonize colors feels freeing and accessible. I’m certainly going to try it out. Thanks
LOVE this video Nicholas!!! Also, LOVE your natural way of BEing: light-hearted, connected, clarity, simplicity, enjoyment...
Great exercise! Thank you!❤
YES!!! Many of us landscape oil painters use a "mother color" that's in all the other colors..just don't get toooo mixy and muddy with it...it's a delicate balance!!
“I don’t use this color much. I don’t even know what this color is.” 😆 I loved that lesson! Just discovered your lessons and am staying up way too late watching them all!
Four year in art school and I learned more about the nature of color harmony from you. Much appreciated!
Agree 100%
I am so glad I found your videos, I am an ‘untrained’ creative having had only a few lessons over the years. I didn’t take the time for my desire to paint when I was younger, regrettably, but since I have showed up at my table consistently, I am learning! I am so thankful for access to your teaching through CZcams, you are very relatable and helpful! Binge watching now!💕🇨🇦
Thank you so much for this great information. Have been painting for years, but never understood this important aspect of color. Kind thoughts to you.
I love your tips, life changing, uplifting. I love art so much
really nice and that quinacridone [sp] gold was wow. Just a small thing but im 76 and trying to leave my niece and children some remembrance paintings. I started this during the pandemic. When I began it was embarrassing and now not so much. Your channel has been so helpful. Im grateful really
That’s great and as you know you can also use the golden glaze all over the work at the end to harmonise. I’m returning to painting after a long absence and these videos are really motivating :-)
Hello, Can I know how do I find this final glaze to quickly harmonize the painting?
Wow! I’ve been struggling to integrate a landscape-esque palette into my abstract work. I watched this video and I’m already seeing promising results! Thanks! I can also see how it would be useful to pick the complementary color of the “mother” color - unmixed - to add contrast.
Glad to watch this video, I do get in the rut of using the same color all the time. Thanks for the tip.
Hello, Nicholas! I'm glad to see you teaching this. I came up with a quite similar method of color harmonizing when I was in art school, back when dinosaurs ruled the earth! LOL Well, almost... It was 1973 and hard-edge painting was going strong at that time in the TTUSOA (Texas Tech University School of Art) Several of my professors had come from LA Art Institute, and Chinaud (i can't spell it but it was a big deal art school in LA decades ago). Anyway, I'm not sure why I bring this up except that I remember my color harmonizing scheme was not learned from them, I came up with it myself.
I was painting hard edge, taping off all shapes, painting on masonite hardboard, and I had that process DOWN!! I used wall paint rollers to avoid all paint marks (minimalism was right in my face, too) and I would wash the paint rollers after every color. It was quite a process oriented way to create paintings. I guess pulling off the tape was fun when I got to see the razor sharp lines of the Liquitex paint shapes next to each other. Yeah, it was :)
But my harmonizing - a lot like your method here. I would mix up, or down, really, a big jar of my "base color" as I called it. Then the other colors of the painting would be made from that base color. I could put any colors into the base color and it would work. Subtle colors were a big deal then, so usually I would have mostly close value colors, harmonized just like you're doing here :)
I 'm not sure I've ever told too many (or any) people how I came up with the colors. Your average person isn't too interested in color mixing... haha
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost my login password. I love any tricks you can offer me
@Junior Castiel instablaster =)
Really helpful. Simply and quickly explained.
BIG EYE OPENER FOR ME . THE COMBINATION OF PAINT COLOURS MAKES THE PAINTING UNIQUE IN EVERY WAY POSSIBLE . IT CAN NOT EVER BE RECREATED WITH THE SAME COLOURS , STUNNING. . THIS IS WHAT MAKES ART SPECIAL , THANK YOU !
Glad this was helpful Vanessa....
It’s 2022 and now there is a color available that’s similar to Golden Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold. It’s Liquitex or Golden Quinacridone Burnt Orange. I’ve never had both colors to compare, so I can’t speak to that, but it’s available and it’s gorgeous.
I am new to your channel and I am ever so glad I found you and especially this video. I was struggling with my painting and didn't know how to work out my colours. Thanks for the
great video.

I haven't seen this until now..one year later.. 👍
I going to try this because I want to be able to choose color schemes better. I paint in water color and acrylic. I don't really like to stick to the original scheme from a reference photo
Gee, where were u thirty years ago when I got stuck on color????
I’m not seeing the link for the Golden glaze. Love this video. Simplicity at its best. Thanks ❤️

Thank you - very interesting and I would have loved to watch just one of the pages from your illustration work kept totally still just for a short moment. They looked so beautifull but you showed them in a rush. And I would have loved to see the book cover and the title of the book and even a link to where It can be bought.
And the same when you show a specific color like the super glazing color from Golden please hold the bottle still so that it is possible to read the name of the color. I did not get the name. Can anybody help?
