2017 Honda Civic 1.5 VTEC Turbo (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • 2017 Honda Civic still has a VTEC motor under the bonnet, but this time it’s a VTEC turbo. There’s a 1.0 129 hp 3-cylinder unit, and a 1.5 182 hp 4-cylinder motor. This test Honda Civic has a 1.5 turbocharged engine, 182 HP, a huge boot, and it seems to one of the most expensive compact hatchbacks out there. This Civic in Prestige trim costs almost 33k euro with CVT. But it’s got absolutely everything Honda has to offer.

    I drive a 1.5t Sport plus. Average fuel consumption is 6.7l/100km combined and 6.0l on highway with cruise control set to 150km/h. I drive over 600km with one tank. I have had so far two earlier Civics, an Accord, a Prelude, a CR-V and an FR-V and it is far the best among them. Maybe only the Prelude had a similar fun to drive as this new Civic. I recommend it for anyone who loves sporty japanese cars.

    Civic is my actual realistic "dream" car with a manual gearbox. Unfortunately no station wagon is available (2 kids). I consider to buy one even with the 1.0 T petrol. I know - that is a different level of dynamics - but still could be enough for my moderate driving style. I really like this car.

    If you have the magic seats, you have to trade off suspension for a torsion beam type which everybody slated. You can’t have both. I would rather trade off magic fold down seats and have independent rear suspension. I also know people who have changed from a Golf who love driving this latest Civic.

    For the money this car is way fast enough. 0-60mph 7.5 and 0-100mph 18.0. This is about as quick as a fiesta ST give or take. Problem with the type r is that you just never get to wring it out if you live in a city, they are way too quick and essentially uneconomic for casual driving. I just wish that car makers would make their junior hot hatches look like a hot hatch because I dont want to spend 30k to look sporty.

      I think that this CVT offers the best of all worlds. EDC-like experience, sports/slope mode, eco mode, even manual mode. What more to ask?

    • @archangelhorus
      @archangelhorus Před 7 lety

      @iwolffy: If I am not mistaken, you have a U.S. version. I remember reading somewhere that the European ones have a different CVT, with programming and response specially made for the European market, in order to make it more like an EDC. This because apparently U.S. is more used to CVT, while the Europeans are more used to EDC and manuals. So, maybe there is a substantial difference between what you experience and what I do. I have been driving since 1985, both manuals and automatics and I can tell you, this CVT was one of the main reasons that I bought the car.

    Is it possible to take the head of this car and put it on a 2020 si?

  • @archangelhorus
    @archangelhorus Před 7 lety +9

    I have bought one. It is the 1.0 lt CVT Executive (everything but the leather seats) and as strange as it sounds, I find it fast enough (130 hp)! I particularly like the stiffness of the chassis, the precision of the wheel, the EDC-like CVT (nothing to do with the past), the almost semi-autonomous driving on the highway (this is the only car in this class than can keep lanes, accelerate, decelerate and even stop and restart, all on its own), the intelligent speed limiter (follows speed signs by combining sign recognition with speed limiter; extremely useful where I drive) and the active dampers (never has a problem with any kind of corner or bad driving).
    However, I did the mistake of reading the US manual before getting the car (a 670 page affair). And I discovered that the European version is missing stuff. Namely:
    1) Walk away auto lock: even though the car has the keyless access, it does not auto lock when one walks away with the key fob on him. To lock the car, you have to either press the button on the fob or the button on the door handle. This feature is clearly explained in the U.S. manual but is totally absent (the relevant pages are missing) in the German one and the relevant options are not present in the Honda Connect U.I. This feature is very convenient, is present in numerous modern cars with
    keyless entry and I don't understand why it is absent in the Civic.
    2) Drive off auto lock: again, the feature of auto locking the car when reaching a certain speed is not present, either in the German manual or the U.I. I consider this an important security feature, which is present in many modern cars.
    3) Auto headlight sensitivity adjustment: this feature is again absent from the manual and the U.I. The headlights do come on and go off automatically, as do the auto high-beam, but there is no adjustment of the sensitivity possible (and they are too sensitive for my taste).
    4) Remote engine start button on key fob: This is again missing from the European model and is very very handy in cold mornings.
    5) Panic button on key fob: this is again a handy feature (to find your car) which is present in the U.S. car but missing from the European car.
    6) Small tray in the center console: although the center console is very large and handy, it only has the big tray. The very handy small tray is missing. I don't understand why Honda would remove this small tray, which is very cheap, on a car priced 29000 euro that has other very expensive features.
    7) Turbo meter: Although the car does have a turbo engine, this display is missing from the MID for the 1.0 lt. engine (apparently it is present in the 1.5 lt engine version). Again, this seems silly and cheap for such an expensive car.
    Contacting Honda and the dealer did not produce any explanation or possibility to activate, at least the first two.
    Overall, very satisfied, but also very annoyed at this small silly stuff.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives Před 7 lety +3

      1. Walk away auto lock is one of the most annoying features IMO (hate Renault's auto-lock feature, I always disable it.
      2. True, Japanese cars in general seem to be missing this feature in Europe. US requirement maybe?
      3. EU homologation I supposed.
      4. Not present in Europe, except for typically American cars, like the Camaro. European manufacturers sometimes offer remote start via mobile app, but even this is only for a minute or so, because in some countries idling the car for longer periods is not allowed. And you shouldn't do it anyway, because it damages the engine. You're supposed to turn the engine on, give it 10-20 seconds, and drive off. Otherwise it won't reach optimum temperature.
      5. Some auto alarm systems have this feature.
      6. I'll have to look at some US spec Civic reviews.
      7. Yes, 1.5 has it. You just have to click through the menu.

    • @archangelhorus
      @archangelhorus Před 7 lety +2

      Dear Marek. Thank you very much for replying and for looking it up. I regard point 1 as very handy and 2 as an important security feature. I think that they are disabled through software in Europe, but I haven't been able to find out why or how to enable them. My efforts through Honda DE and my dealer were fruitless. I would very much like to activate these in my Civic. Can you ask if this is possible through your connections to Honda and Co?
      For the remote engine start, it is very handy in winter and if Honda sees no problem to have it in US, why would Europe be different? Same for panic button. Very handy.
      About the price of the car, I did the pricing exercise with many brands and I found that most were more expensive than the Civic with the same options! I can list the following: Mazda, Toyota, Subaru, Renault, Peugeot and of' course the luxury ones, Volvo, Audi, BMW and Merc. You must take care to include all the options though.
      Keep up the good work, you're one of my favorite car journalists! I particularly like your pointy humor!

    • @archangelhorus
      @archangelhorus Před 7 lety

      What was the price of your car? Mine was 29300 Euro (~33000 USD)! I agree that you should have the option though.

    • @archangelhorus
      @archangelhorus Před 7 lety

      @iwolffy: I agree that in Germany the cars are generally a bit more expensive. But take care that it is a comparable version with exactly the same equipment included. I've read that in "poor"' markets Honda provides trims that have less equipment, in order to offer the car cheaper. For example, in Greece the 1.5lt CVT "Sport" version, which is their top one, is 27150 Euro. But it is not the same as the German Sport version, which is 29260 Euro. And also have in mind that on top of these German prices, it is quite easy to get a discount between 11% and 13%, plus additional promotions and "gifts". The 29310 that I mentioned for my car was the retail price. I can't reveal what was the end price, but it was quite a bit less than that. But all this depends on the dealer, local Honda promotions and "gifts".

      I have to agree on that. You sit very low and the feet are too high, even if you raise the seat to the top. It feels a bit like a cart and the front visibility is awful. Not that it is better with most modern sporty cars. You need to get a SUV for that.

Not sure why they messed up, but i wouldn't like to sit in this car for a longer trip. So yeah, i'm probably getting a SUV. The new Suzuki SX4 seems fun to drive, great visibility, comfortable, spacey and much cheaper. But i can also understand why somebody buys the civic, it looks really cool and the engines are great.

    Nothing against the CVT, Honda builds fantastic lawn mowers: images.cdn.circlesix.co/image/2/1200/630/5/uploads/memes/lawnmower-stance-53b1d719398c0.jpg
    But seriously these CVTs that pretend to up and downshift are completely senseless because everything that makes a CVT so efficient is abandoned. But yeah, companies will build whatever sells.

    • @archangelhorus
      @archangelhorus Před 7 lety

      Well, I'll have to disagree. I was also very skeptic about the CVT, but the new ones from Honda and Toyota are much improved. Civic's in particular offers very big flexibility and in reality 4 different modes. Eco CVT is slow and efficient, little better than the old one. Normal CVT looks more like an EDC, downshifting more the faster you press the accelerator. S mode (Sport or Slope), downshifts even more, to provide torque and engine brake. And manual mode (S mode + Paddles) emulates a 7-speed manual gearbox quite well. It really provides a lot of flexibility, but you have to learn how to operate it. It is not very easy. For "lazy" people, the manual version is simpler. But with the manual, you loose a lot of automation in the driver-assistance systems.

      archangelhorus To be honest, I never drove a CVT and I'm totally open to it. I just can't resist lawn mower jokes when it comes to Honda. What you say sounds interesting and I'd love to give it a try one day.
