The thing about real barrel staves is that they aren't cut and then curved, and they certainly can't be as thin as you made yours. They're made from larger, thicker pieces of oak and carved into that curved shape, traditionally by hand. Also fun fact, a real barrel isn't held together with fasteners or adhesives, it's held together solely by the pressure from the outer metal bands, as well as the moisture from whatever is inside the barrel causing the oak to swell (also traditionally sealed with dried rush/reeds between the staves to prevent leaks). I know in the end you weren't trying to make a real barrel, just a hammer head that looked like one, but just figured I'd leave this here for any of your future barrel-making escapades.

I think you're right, they seem to be carved to be curved in that direction, plus the circumference is usually split into more staves that are not as wide.
Might I recommend Galacta Knight's shield or sword (or both) in the future? I plan on making the mask and would love to learn how to make the tools out of something other than foam
I think barrel makers use steam to bend the staves to form the nice curvatures. Its construction is much the same way you'd make a medieval wooden tankard. Hope this helps for future builds!

After seeing the hell you went through getting a wood version done, I think I made the right choice lol, high school me would have had a rough time making a wood hammer
I actually built a Minecraft sword a while back for a video but like you said: it was very tricky and I wasn't satisfied enough with it to release it. Maybe I'll revisit the idea sometime!
