FYI for anyone looking to save $ on EC reprints -- the absolute least-expensive option is the softcover "EC Annual" set of publications, which are comic-book size and have several issues (in sequence) in each volume.
There are six volumes each for the three EC horror titles, Tales from the Crypt (30 issues), Vault of Horror (29 issues) and The Haunt of Fear (28 issues).
Most of the EC annuals sell on eBay for about $10-14 plus shipping, but the first two Tales from the Crypt annuals are apparently scarce, and can sell for upwards of $35 to $50 apiece, for a nice copy.

I'm a Big Fan of Horror Comics as well .Recently picked up and devoured Choke / Gasp : The Best of EC Comics and own several of the archive editions .I also have an original copy of Crime Suspenstories #22 and I know I don't have to tell you what makes THAT one special .
Couple of things ...I recently discovered that a Company called Gwandanaland Comics has published all of the Skywald Magazines as well as a bunch of The old Eerie Mags .(the Company , not the Title ) Turns out they have fallen into Public Domain .They do them as four issue collections (appr.260 pages) for 15 bucks each .Not great production value , but the pages themselves are perfect reproductions . Well worth checking out if you haven't read Skywald in the past (or even if you have)
Also , I don't know if you watch many other You Tubers , but a guy with a channel called Comic Crypt of Castle Hills has been doing videos all months where he shows off his horror comic runs .Fun stuff .
Great video as always my friend .
P.S. The Skywald titles were Nightmare , Psycho and Scream

EC is definitely the go-to on horror comics! I used to collect the Gladstone reprints from the early 90's. They tended to be on cheap paper, but they had several issues collected in each one, so they were definitely cheaper than the archive editions of the time! The only loose EC comic I have in my collection is a copy of their New Testament Bible Stories comic they were making when William's father ran the company and it was still Educational Comics. Those single issues of the horror, sci-fi, and other later stuff are expensive even in crap condition! So it's definitely better to get them loose. I used to love watching Tales From the Crypt and seeing which book the episodes were based on. They were usually straight from Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror....Even sometimes Shock Suspenstories and some of the others! Great comics and an awesome show! Great video, Dante! Have a Happy Halloween!

Bruce Campbell is much better known as the lead character "Ash" in the Sam Raimi's Evil Dead film series.
Also, the other EC Sci-fi title was "Incredible Science Fiction", then there was "Weird Science" that you mentioned, and also "Weird Fantasy". In the end, these last two titles were merged in to "Weird Science-Fantasy" for the last few issues before EC folded.
Nice collection of EC archives. I've got the single issue reprints that Gemstone did in the 1990's-- 297 issues in all across all the EC titles.

Excellent selection of EC Comics! I'd still recommend the early Jose's Gonzales run of Vampirella for you! Years ago, Dynamite comics released collected hardcover editions of the magazine run with ads(just like the Dark Horse collected Tales from the Crypt editions!) Sadly, they're becoming highly collectable so grab any while you can. Also, check out the Artist Edition and Art book featuring Jose Gonzales beautiful and very timeless art! I guarantee you wont regret it!

Question for you Dante....Were there any good Chapters with Werewolves? In fact, could you make a video talking about reccommended Tales from the Crypt stories( as well as Shock Suspenstories, and other cult classic stories)?

    • @reprintranch
      @reprintranch Před 3 lety +1

I'll give you my recommendations for individual issues (you might be able to find cheap single-issue reprints at your LCS) -- Vault of Horror 35 (ie. sixth-to-last issue, Christmas tree with coffin on cover), Haunt of Fear 27 (ie. next-to-last issue, cover has hand coming out of swamp), Tales from the Crypt 46 (ie. final issue, noticeably green cover with werewolf). Honorable mention -- Shock SuspenStories #9 (prisoner chained to corpse with vultures on cover). All four of these comics contain some of the best EC horror tales, or so I believe. Caveat -- the numbering on reprint issues may be different from the original issue numbers I've listed here. Look for the cover art, that's a reliable guide.

    • @Dante19883

For anybody who's not familiar with EC material, here's a website where you can read perhaps the single most celebrated EC horror story, "Horror We? How's Bayou?" from The Haunt of Fear issue 17, written by Al Feldstein and illustrated by Graham Ingels. Link -- anintrotohorror.blogspot.com/2012/07/horror-we-hows-bayou.html

@@Dante19883 I wish I could've added a link for "Swamped!" which is my fave EC horror story, but I couldn't find one. It appeared in Haunt of Fear #27, mentioned earlier. It's about an insane hermit who's a cannibal and lives in a shack built over a quicksand bog. I first read it as a middle-school kid and it scared me half to death -- I still have occasional nightmares spawned by this tale, 40-some years later. I can't think of a better recommendation -- if you're into that sort of stuff. Also worth noting -- Berni Wrightson owned a copy of Haunt 27 as a kid, and said he read it on a nightly basis. See the very first question in this interview -- www.twomorrows.com/comicbookartist/articles/05wrightson.html

Great video bro! Did you ever read "Scream" comics? They were published in England from around '84 onwards, only for a year or so. All printed by IBC on newsprint B&W, with a colour cover. As a 10 year old boy back then, they were absolutely terrifying, and even today, still stand ni the test of time. Well worth checking out if you've never read them.
