This was the best video. Scott explains other ways of planting as well and boils it all down to a simple method. I had been really confused about how to plant. Thank you Scott.
so glad to hear you mention biochar. after three years of using that in the garden, I'm blown away by the climb in fertility
Do you use with all veg plantings?
@@tinae8433 yes, usually composted with chicken manure. Been using the composted manure for maybe a decade, starting producing and adding biochar maybe five years ago. took about three years for the difference to show and then it was astonishing. a 34 lb kohlrabi?!? Holy, I could hardly pick it up.
Well my friend. I planted my two year old crowns in my 10’ x 2’ bed. 16 plants. 15 inch spaced. Built up the soil like you instructed. Put a layer of woodchips on top. Thank you for all your guidance.
the most sensible method we've seen!!!
Gardener Scott thank you for all the time, effort, and experience you put into your videos. You've saved me so much work over the past few years.
Thank you Scott for this video.
Today, (5/3/23) I planted asparagus for the first time. It was this video that I watched over the snowy winter (MN, zone 4) that gave me the confidence to plant Asparagus.
Thank you!!
Hello. It's been almost a year since you planted your asparagus. Do you see anything growing at this point? It may be a bit early too. I am planting mine today so I am hoping to get it established. Hope you are are having good luck! Happy spring!
Getting ready to plant som asparagus, glad your channel showed up for it.
Just received my purple asparagus roots. I do plan on planting in a raised bed. Thank you for showing me the way.
Love to see some pics of that asparagus bed today
Yes☺️
I’ve planted some asparagus 2 years ago - got my 1st growth last year (3 stalks only) Being this is the 2nd year, I am hoping for more of them of course and eat some right from off my
grill! mmm! 😋
That is awesome. The last time I did that they didn't make it from the grill to the house. Too good!
@ Gardner Scott , Hi Gary from AZ , well plants are coming up like my cucumbers wait to the true leaves come out they did very good today I trans planted to a bigger pot do I do the same way set the bigger pots in a little water and still keep them under light with no kids I used your way for soil after seed stater mix I am keeping light about 3 " above plants , so the water in the tray will Wilkie up the water am I doing right so far. thank you Gary
@@GardenerScott 💜💜
Great advise ive done much the same and now the plants are nearly 5ft high in first 3months 😊
I keep checking my beds daily. I planted my asparagus 2 years ago, so they are established, and this is my first chance to harvest. No sprouts yet... but they'll be here in a week or two at most! I am so excited!!!
Good for you. It's worth the wait.
Did they pop up?
@@Doitallgp they did! 2 harvests so far, and more starting to pop up
Thanks for all the great info on planting asparagus. I planted from seed this year and really had a good germination rate. The information about the soil prep was what I have been looking for. Need to get to work on a raised bed.
I wish I had seen this before I planted my asparagus. I got some asparagus seeds and I hope they work for me.
Just as you said the asparagus crowns I planted following directions in this video are starting to break through the mulch!!! Exciting.
How long before you noticed the first sign of growth? I will be planting today.
Thank you sir for sharing how to plant asparagus
Just getting ready to plant Sweet Purple with Jersey Knight in the same raised bed here in NE Pennsylvania. My first asparagus bed. Thank you very much for the information, feeling more confident. 👍
Brilliant info. Thank you.
I planted asparagus years ago with no good instructions. Had some really good ones but most were uneatable. Didn’t know about female vs male. Thank you so much for this very helpful video. I’m your new fan.
My old landlord.who has a one acre Asparagus patch that her Dad planted in the 50's . And it's still going strong. Every spring they burn it off and run a disc over it . Plus they spread horse manure on it every couple of years
I just planted my 10 crowns in a raised bed of mushroom compost and perlite here in western PA, zone 6a. Dug a trench and then fanned out the roots over the little hill I made in the middle. Covered up the roots and wasn’t sure about the crown. Now I know! Tomorrow I’ll go out and get rid of the big mountain in the middle of my bed and add my mulch. Should have KNOWN to look here first 😃 Thank you!!
So glad I found this video I’m planning on planting asparagus in raised beds. You just earned yourself a subscriber
Thanks! Welcome to the channel.
Thanks for this Scott. This year I built a new 4x8 bwd exclusively for asparagus. Up until seeing your presentation here, I was not information rich with doing this even with a book. You’ve explained it clean and nice. Bless you
Excellent tutorial, thank you. There are so many videos out there with different methods of planting but this one is the simplest.
Great informative video. Helped lots ! Thank you
Watched most your vids maybe twice and still looking forward to the third time 😍 love ya dude!
Damn, I wish I saw this 5 years ago. Planted 12 plants and now down to just one under performing one.
Thank you so much.
Very clear. Just getting ready to plant
This is the best asparagus bed video, Scott. I’m planting my Jersey knight hybrids from Raintree nursery and I’m going to make it a 3’ x 8’ bed, instead of a 2 1/2’ x 8’ bed - I think that will make a difference down the road and I won’t waste my time with successive covering of soil. Thanks again!
All good information, Scott. When my husband and I retired five years ago, asparagus was the first plant we put in the garden. We waited three years to eat anything as that was recommended. Now we enjoy asparagus spears nice and fresh from the garden. We do not have any bug issues of any kind with this plant. What a joy.
Thanks. It is a great plant!
I enjoyed your video and it was very informative. Be safe.
Happy St Patrick's Day!
Thank! I’ve been thinking about adding an asparagus bed to my garden... maybe 2021 🤔
Plenty of time to get your bed and soil ready.
Excellent show as usual. Very helpful for me in a raised bed here in Nova Scotia.
Great updated info for 2024. Thanks so much.
Glad I saw this before planting. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
This is great. The traditional advice on planting asparagus has always bothered me, seemed too complicated and, well, silly.
Thanks again for your excellent advice. I am trying asparagus this year, and this is the best advice I have found.
I'm doing a 12' x 3' raised (30" high) cedar bed for asparagus. I view it, as I do nut trees, as an exercise in delayed gratification, and don't plan on harvesting any for a good two if not three years. That said, some that I planted in the ground more than 15 years ago threw some seed that the birds obligingly picked up and planted along my property line. lol Mother Nature does have a sense of humor, doesn't she?
She certainly has a great sense of humor.
Can't wait for your live streams tomorrow
Good times to watch this ;)
This is the way!!!
Great videos Scott. Thanks!
Thanks from New Zealand! I enjoyed your video.
I’m watching this while eating asparagus😀🌞
Please make a video for how and when to harvest. Also when to stop and when to prune and prepare for winter. Would really appreciate your expertise
That's coming soon. I've been filming for two years since I planted to show the progress and this year will be the harvest.
I've never tried growing asparagus but I will now, thanks for another informative, motivational and educational video.
You're welcome!
This is a very good video. Thank you
THANKS THANKS THANKS!!!!!!!! GOING TO DO THIS TOMORROW.
Just the advice I needed, thank you.
Some very interesting tips there Scott on growing asparugus, thank you 👍
Greetings from Poland 😀👍
I always wanted to plant an asparagus bed. Always thought it was harder than that.Thank You for showing me that I could do this.Where did you find such beautiful asparagus roots?
Yes, they are beautiful. I got them from FedCo in Maine.
Just starting things here in VA....good timing....I've been wanting to start some asparagus for years....thanks
Glad to help.
I love your channel so many good tips sure do appreciate it thank you for your time making these videos God bless you and yours.
Absolutely appreciate your knowledge and having access with your channel. 😊 thank you
I purchased a bag of 2 year old crowns, but it was too late to plant them this year, they're still in the original bag (unopened). Will they still be good to plant in the spring?. YES this video is saved in the Gardener Scott Play list 😁🤗
They may dry out and die before then unless you can store them in a cool, slightly humid area. It may be better to go ahead and plant them in fall after your first frost.
@@GardenerScott okay Great Thank You Gardener Scott
Thanks scott
Just put mine in using this method. Much less work and I see no reason why I shouldn’t get the same results as a trench. Now just have to wait...and wait...
This was very helpful - thank you!
Thank you for the information I planted some and they didn’t did well, I will try it again with your method, thank you so much, stay healthy 🙏🏼👍🏼😷
Thank you. You too.
Another awesome informative vid, thx. And hv been wanting to say thank you very much for your genuine enthusiastic attitude to want to help/teach others what you know. We feel your love of gardening, it is appreciated. I'm getting ready to move to Tennessee on a 5 acre property & can't wait to get my hands in some soil & try your methods. 👍😊
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for the explanation on asparagus planting. I am almost ready to start planting as this is a must have....thanks again!
Glad it was helpful!
I am planning to plan an asparagus bed this year. What is a good size for a family of 5 that could eat asparagus every day? Thanks
A general guideline is 5-10 plants per person, more if you eat a lot of asparagus.
About to go on this journey. Thank you for your very informative video
Thank you for a great video.
Great video thank you
Mike, can you plant the roots like this in the spring? I have new garden beds and first time gardener here! Growing a full bed of asparagus.
Thank You!
I’m sure my ground hog would love this...
I have wire under the bed to deter my gophers.
Gardener Scott My groundhogs come from above, digging everything up constantly. This is my fifth season as a gardener and I’m so tired of these things! We can’t kill them here, and if trapped, we can move them 100 yards! Useless...seeking solution. Do any plants deter them?
@Shady Man I would put wire on the top too (after you plant the asparagus).
👍🏻 really great info! My grandmother always had raised bed asparagus. Here in northern Minnesota our soil is just about pure clay so if you want to grow this tasty treat a raised bed is best. I've always been baffled by how the wild asparagus does it! It's every where and lives happily in our crummy soil 🤷🏻♀️ I'm planning on building a perennial garden in the near future on our new homestead and most plants will end up in raised beds.
Sounds great! Enjoy it!
Great vedio, I'm planning on building a 4'x8' bed, how much soil, mulch ect will o need...is your beds made from treated wood?.... Thanks
Loved this method it's so much easier than the 'traditional 'ones and makes perfect sense. Can anyone tell me were the bell is though?

love asparagus worth the grow :) - Ruthie
Have you ever transplanted asparagus grown from seed indoors? I started mine in pots and I see teeny tiny spears shooting up and I want to put them in a raised bed soon. Any tips? This is all new to me. (Growing Asparagus/starting things from seed)
Yes, I have. Transplant just like any other seedling. You can plant them a little deeper than the level in the pot. Consider how big they'll get when you space them.
It will take like 5 years to get asparagus from seeds, you are better off buying 1 or 2 [edit] years old asparagus roots they are like at most 2x the price of the already cheap strawberry plants.
Fantastic video! Thank you!
Thank you💕🙏🏻👍🌍🌿🐝🌺💕
Hey Scott thanks for another informative and entertaining video. Curious about the soil blend you use and the trenching under the bed. We have good, rich soil here in coastal SC. Could I get away with not trenching, and building on top of our native soil?
My bed design at present would be a 12” bed, with about 4 inches of hugelkultur on the bottom encased in fill dirt, then a 50/50 blend of screened topsoil and organic compost with the other amendments like biochar and peat like you’ve done.
Would I go wrong here?
I will have to grow this again have not in years. Nice video 👍
Thanks!
Nice video, thank you for making it! I planted my crowns 25 days ago. Today I see a crown pushing up to the surface. They were covered with at least 3 inches of soil. Do you know what is happening? My soil is very rich in mulch/composted manure and is soft and light.
They are growing. It is normal for crowns to push through the soil as they grow.
Excellent video. I've been gardening for many years and just this year trying asparagus.....I've learned to like eating it. Years ago I starting mulching with a couple layers of newspaper covered by a couple inches of straw. Keeps the weeds at bay and the soil moist. At first I just used straw but that resulted in growing a lot of wheat. My question is, do you think the asparagus spears will penetrate a couple layers of wet newspaper and straw? Thanks for the nice videos.
It should easily penetrate straw and wet newspaper probably stop it. You may need to tear the newspaper if you see mounds develop where they are trying to grow.
What are good companion plants for these beds? I heard that strawberries work well as their roots are at a different level. Thoughts?
Thank you for your ongoing great advice.
Cheers
Richard
Shallow-rooted plants like strawberries can work, but annuals like lettuce and other greens may be better. New asparagus shoots will spread into new areas of the bed in spring and I don't won't semi-perennial roots and crowns from strawberries to interfere with them.
Thank you for this. I’m planting asparagus as soon as it gets here. I heard you shouldn’t harvest it’s first year but wait until the next year. Is that true?
It's better to wait a couple years to harvest. The third year is when I start.
Awesome video!!!!!
Thanks Gardner Scott! Plan to plant mine tomorrow… So the spear head will be fully covered
By the soil, correct?
Yes, the roots are deep and the spears will be buried.
Super thank you😁
Gardener Scott - what would be the expected harvest per root? One asparagus per root ball?
At the three-year point when you can begin harvesting, it is about 3-5 spears per root. That increases each year as the plant gets stronger and the roots spread.
Thank you! This, as usual, is great info. I just bought asparagus to start a new bed. I was feeling like I wanted them in a raised bed, but not too high. Thanks Gardner Scott. When should we put them in the ground? Now if only you had an artichoke video, 😉. That is the other perennial bed I am starting. Some make it sound complicated lol.
Put them in the ground as soon as you can after getting the roots. I still need to develop an artichoke bed. That video is going to be awhile. 🙂
This is the best video I’ve found about planting asparagus crowns. I’m about to attempt this in our Texas heat. I’m going to plant in a raised cedar bed. Do I need to put plastic or cardboard board at the bottom or just start layering the organic material on top of wood. Also do you think I need to have a soaker hose installed inside of the raised bed or can I just water with water hose. It’s pretty hard to keep anything alive here after June!
I don't recommend anything under the bed, especially plastic. The roots should have full access to the soil underneath unless it's contaminated. I hand water with a hose, but a soaker hose can make it easy.
I have 1/4in hardware cloth under my bed to keep out voles, and soil underneath that. Do you think the roots will go through it?
@@matts2813 Smaller roots can. Bigger roots will shift horizontally.
@GardenerScott do you think it will cause a problem? The bed is 4x8 x 1ft deep with the mesh on the very bottom
@@matts2813 It shouldn't be a big concern. I have mesh under my bed and the asparagus is growing fine.
Thanks for the very informative, no-nonsense video! I just built a 4 x 8 foot raised garden for asparagus in my NC garden and I'm going to fill it today. Where did you buy these beautiful crowns? Not much luck finding good quality crowns locally so far.
Thanks. I got some Jersey Knight from Stark Bros. seeds online.
@@GardenerScott Great, thank you for your reply! I'll check them out.
Please Please Please do a follow up video. EVERY ONE does a how to plant Asparagus video but NO ONE does a How to care for your new asparagus plant for the next two years. I've heard don't trim it and let it grow. That is the stage mine is in now. What a mess. Will you please do a series of how to care for you asparagus for the next two years to obtain optimal plant health and yield ??? Please Please Please !!!!!
Definitely. I have two follow-up videos planned. One later this year on how to grow asparagus that will discuss growing, mulching, fertilizing, and cleanup. And one in a year or two to discuss harvesting and continuing care.
Thanks for your very informative video Scott. I'm wondering if there might be any other companion plants that you could plant in the same box that would share the space? Flowers? Herbs? Thanks again.
You can add other plants like herbs around the edges, but I prefer to leave the central growing area to just asparagus.
Many of your raised beds are higher (2 2x10 boards high). Can you elaborate further on why you only went one board high for the asparagus? Is it because that is sufficient depth, makes it easier to replace the boards on this perennial bed when they rot, and/or other reasons?
Thank you for all the excellent videos! I’m just getting started with a new garden, and your videos are tremendously helpful!
The main reason for my high beds is so I can work in them while sitting on the edge to ease strain on my back. The asparagus bed needs almost no attention other than watering and occasional weeding so I don't need the height. The soil depth is fine and I did consider future replacement of the boards, but that was secondary.
When we let it finally go to seed we can replant the seeds. Asparagus will continue to sprout.
So if I get two year old dormant plants like you planted in this video, I will get a harvest in another two years? I just want to understand, this is new to me and seeing your video it looks much easier than I thought, I just wonder the timeframe until harvest. Thanks for all of your great videos, I’m learning so much from them! I appreciate you! 😃
Yes, that's basically the way it works. In that first year (in two years) only a few of the spears should be harvested. It's really at least three years before a substantial harvest should be made. Thanks.
I planted crowns last spring and thought I read that my spears could be harvested the following spring since they were 2-year crowns. I also see advice from some NOT to harvest my first spears this spring, so the plant will be stronger for the Second Spring, and I can harvest then. What is the story on this?
While you could harvest the next year, the plants won't have a true two-year-old root system because they were dug up to sell. I would suggest waiting at least until the second year to harvest.
Very informative I would like to know how many Jersey Supreme asparagus plants come in the bag??Thank you for your wisdom.
It depends on the seller, but it's often 20-25.
Who is that beautiful lab?
That's Lily.
How wide do you suggest we make the trench?
It needs to be wide enough for the roots you're planting.
Gardener Scott thank you so mush for replying so quickly. For that alone I’ve recommended your channel to others! One more question: how many plants do you suggest for an asparagus eating family of 5? I bought 20 roots....
@@highlandscommunityclub1160 I read in another reply from Gardener Scott that he recommends 12-15 plants per person (for more than one meal of asparagus). Each plant yields 6-8 spears.
How does planting differ if you have seedings? How deep would you plant them? Thanks for your great videos!
The plants will be shallower because you don't want to bury them. Over time the roots will grow deep.
I tried some years ago with some success , dont get to many spears per running foot, and desease can be a problem , what is the best ph level for them? I understand that is important with asparagus. Good video Scott , look forward to more, thank you.
Thanks. A neutral to slightly alkaline soil is best.
Tips :):):)
Can you put crushed eggshells for calcium into the soil??
Crushed eggshells don't add as much calcium as many people think. It is not in a form that plants use and does not break down easily.
