    It's this weird situation where new art direction is the problem. The original was much more moody and atmospheric, you could feel the environment. The new one, whilst the characters themselves look much better, they don't seem to have much connection to their surroundings. The dorm is very bright now, compared to the gloom lighting of before, your dorm room is empty and flat, whilst in the original it feels like it has more detail and life to it (especially with the light flooding in through the open windows and the dust in the air).

      Kinda makes me want to get the PC files and do a texture overhaul. I can't mod, but I understand art and aesthetics. I think toning down the brightness and muddying the colours a little bit would go a long way to giving back the game's identity. Like, P3RE is _pretty,_ don't get me wrong, but the glitzy graphics fit the drama of the Phantom Thieves way better than it fits SEES, and even P5 had its dirty and cramped environments. This game needs to be toned down to something more visually melancholic for the sake of the characters and story.

    Hmmm... I like the original more. The way that it's almost silent about the characters's thoughts like Yukari putting the gun to her head where it feels raw, gripping, and ruthless as you're wondering if she's going to do it or not and her panting. Over the Remake where she's talking about putting the gun to her head. It feels more telling than showing in the Remake where in the Original it was Showing instead of Telling and that told a lot.
    OG goes straight to the point and has a quiet sobering ambience to the scenes, you feel this isolation with the MC walking through the train station and on the subway. Remake takes it time to show the environment and how pretty it looks and happy everyone else and the MC walking about the day-to-day life. Comes out a little jarring. Even the opening with the Moon (almost horror like) and Sun (another day) is a good way of saying the difference between them are like night and day.
    Sure, the Remake's artwork is beautiful with more impressive details and designs but it comes off as too pretty and colorful for the kind of atmosphere that Persona 3 has and something feels lost spiritually because of it. Like they're trying to make it more like Persona 4 and 5 with how more full of light and colors they have where 3 wasn't like that.
    The way the MC just walks in the Dark Hour in the OG is haunting and his disinterest attitude where the Remake they go out of the Animated Cutscene and him not really reacting even a little. Walking through the bloody puddle in the OG is missing from the Remake. They're little changes, but it does say a lot about atmosphere.
    Even the music and sound direction. Felt more ominous and foreboding in the OG.
    I do like how signing your name in the Remake looks. Cool and stylish and gets into instead of a simply HUD screen.
    Also, the old artstyle works so well to convey that gritty reality in 3 so well with how the characters are drawn and express themselves.

      I felt like the music side is actually improve over old one & I know most peeps can't move on from OG female singer but the new battle theme song when you approaching shadow from behind is absolute banger & even the new opening theme are really good
      Honestly with all life quality change like gameplay & Tartarus overhaul level design it's hard to go back to OG P3Fes,, especially those new art style 2D model looks a lot better in Reload seeing Fuuka & Elizabeth in much better agle, shape & way cuter makes me happy enough because I'm not a fan of their 2D art style in OG .... even tough we all can agree OG gloomy art direction looks better in OG but the new art direction is still looks very appealing to the eye, at least P3R still very much look alike Old P3 & much more close to P3 Movie counterparts, funny enough P3 movie art direction are close to P4 & P5 but nobody complain LoL

      One change that really bugs me is when Minato first uses the Evoker. In the OG even he struggles to pull the trigger, it can be seen as symbolic but also he has no idea about this world of personas. All he knows is that Yukari tried to use it to fight this monster but he could just as well be shooting himself in the head. In the remake there's none of that, he just accepts everything and does it with no struggle.

    • @alexquah784
      @alexquah784 Před 2 měsíci +1

      I never played the original Persona 3, but in my humblest opinion, Reload’s cutscenes are way better. While I do think the mood and grim tone gave the og its identity, Reload’s cutscenes are better in conveying what is happening onscreen. The older cutscenes constantly have these close-ups of people’s faces, billboards, and clocks that it’s difficult to tell what is happening sometimes. Along with the constant dips to black and cut-ins of symbolic imagery, I often get confused on what am I supposed to be focusing on. If the camera was at a wider angle, I would’ve actually liked some of these cutscenes. Reload’s cutscenes have wider and consistent shots (both 2D and 3D) that are easier to comprehend and by default are more enjoyable to watch.
      Although I will say, the shots of Orpheus and Thanatos in the original look way better. They just come off more savage and off putting than how Reload handled it. Honestly, if Makoto’s awakening was done in 2D, both personas would have been even more terrifying.

      @samuel.jpg.1080p Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@alexquah784 fair enough, I think the some shots in the original can be hard to follow. Everything else is good.

      @alexquah784 So theres an interesting thing about Reload’s scene with the Protagonist’s Awakening. They tried to recreate the P3 Movie Awakening. And it was doomed to fail the moment they were recreating it in 3D. The Movie Awakening had great and dynamic shots with excellent sound design. The movement of the characters was strong and fluid, they didn’t look like they were stiff / forced to move.
      Now I don’t know why they even bothered because trying to emulate a scene from 2D animation won’t look beautiful (when there is no love put into it). They really should’ve taken the scene in a different direction, that way people wouldn’t have judged it as much.
      With all that said, Portable still has the worst P3 Awakening by far. Official tier list goes as follows:
      1. P3 Movie
      2. P3 / FES
      3. P3 Reload
      4. P3 Portable

I sunk hundreds of hours into it when I got it. On topic: so far the OG Persona 3 releases are far better. Well, times change, so do audiences. And it is well, normal for remakes, that they alter things. Some people like it, some people dislike it.
    Personally I love Reload's artystyle and direction. It is way more modern while also having oldschool vibe with the setting.
    P1, P2 and P3 orginals were indeed more sinister and spooky in their vibe, but with P4G they changed the pace and mood to take Persona into different direction, with P5 being its peak. They clearly tried to apply this to P3, while also retaining some core characteristics and I think it went out really well on the middle ground.
    Remakes are always a double edged sword. You want to apply to both old and new players with different perspectives and ideas how this should look like.

    while i think p3re is a step up from the original, the thing that's definitely lacking the most is the art direction. i think the character portraits are gorgeous, but it really feels as if they sacrificed the gritty and despondent atmosphere that the original had. everything is way too bright in this game, including the ui like the textbox (like why is it that vibrant blue? it doesn't look good with a lot of the environments...)
    i loved the dull tones in the original game because it perfectly reflects how the MC viewed the world. plus, the original opening cutscene had a really overwhelming, loud and bustling feeling in the city that was almost painful to watch vs how beautiful and busy the city is in reload. and there's the whole added dialogue to yukari trying to use the evoker, which when i first watched it i found to be really unnecessary because the whole tenseness from that scene was over how it looks like this random girl is literally about to off herself in silence (aside from her panting and the running water), constantly contrasting with the obnoxious liveliness of the city.
    also i get 3d animation is less expensive and also easier than 2d, but i felt like changing the scene of the MC awakening his persona lost a lot of its coolness(? edginess?) because of the 3d animation, that imo i wasn't really a fan of. he didn't really hesitate as much as he did in the original--he was clearly shaking because for all he knew, he was just holding a gun that he was about to literally shoot himself with. the 2d animation of thanatos also felt a lot more ruthless than the 3d one. i feel like p3re didn't make it seem as serious as it should've been...

    reload is utterly lacking in direction. it's unfortunate that this is gonna be the standard impression of p3 going forward

    The fact the movie adaptation is better than the reload cutscenes show that it isn't hard to be faithful and have a higher production value.

    I think they did a good job with the in game awakening scene, although it wouldve been cool to see it with updated 2D animation. Also I wish they kept the heartbeat before Makoto used the evoker. Opening scene is so much better in original. Like the cuts between different parts of the environment and cutting in and out to burn my dread last battle was so unnerving and one hell of a memorable start to a game, and it's a lot more bland and straightforward how it's done in Reload. There's like no artistic direction like there was in the original. Like they did not need to make Yukari say those lines basically explaining what she's thinking, when it was conveyed so much better without it, and made it feel much more real and intense.

    I dislike how they changed how the MC acted while walking around, in the school he didn't have a shoulder bag because he carried his books under his arm. And the fact you can't run around with your hands inside your pockets anymore, he'll immediately take them out if you do start running in the remake. I don't know, I think it gave the MC more character or something...

      Don't know if I was the only one to do this, but I would always wait for the MC to put his hands into his pockets before I started moving or walking around. Probably just a small nitpick for me, but I missed those little awkward moments the MC had

    Glad to see I am not alone. The opening cutscene changes stood out immediately. While they are not bad, compared to the old animated cutscenes they failed to capture the same raw emotion P3 and P3 FES had. Thankfully as I continued, this was overshadowed by the additions Atlus has added to the game. SEES members feel a lot more fleshed out from the OG, and the newer scenes that they added are solid. I hope they do The Answer well in future DLC or rerelease as Atlus loves to do.

    The original opening scene is definitely creepier and more atmospheric than the remake.
    Also Yukari's "Who's there ?" sounds a lot more dramatic .The whole build up is more tense and menacing in the OG despite the low budget animation.

    Reload is absolutely better in my opinion but I still really love the look of the ps2 version. When I see that opening play all of the sudden I'm fifteen again, downloading this random anime game called P3fes onto my ps3 not knowing how much it would actually shape how I interact with video games. Even though Reload is the best way to play it nowadays, I very firmly believe that the ps2 version's visuals still hold up super well.

    Both openings are definitely a product of their time. Reload is pretty clean and is CG by todays anime standards. The original on the other hand, really reminds you of the rough and hand drawn anime of the early and mid 2000s. One that comes to mind is Boogiepop Phantom and many other anime during that time.

  • @MillyKKitty
    @MillyKKitty Před 2 měsíci +2

    The remake seems to be underutilizing the camera angles to create a sense of unease at the beginning.
    When the camera is far away from the protagonist's face, it creates the feeling of otherworldliness.
    The lighting is also at times a bit... Too bright. There should be less light sources with different colors for mood building. In your room, there should be more orange and red light coming from the windows to signal morning, and blues signaling night.
    One thing that's way better are the character designs and some individual scenes. Pharos looks really goofy in the original, and the roof cutscene has pretty bad pacing in the original. Some of the camera angles were weird, where both Yuuka and MC's faces don't fit into the same frame. The composition of the scene where Yuuka got hit by the shadow was also kind of unclear in the og.
