    Hi Remi - I have a south window that gets a LOT of light, but it is very direct all day as there is no overhang (it "touches the plants" I think you say). I thought that would be too strong, so have a sheer curtain over the window between the glass and the plants. Do you think that is enough for a N. 'Bloody Mary"? I do have the Sansi clip-on 10W lights but use those for my Cephalotus.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  Před rokem +1

      Maybe try without the curtain to see how the leaves react? I looks strong but depending where you live it can still be ok. ;)

      @@WindowsillNepenthes - I am in Washington State, south of British Columbia, and we are known more for our rain. 😅 I noticed my N Ventricosa 'Red" was getting red tinge on the leaves, but I am unsure if it's sunburn or natural coloration. I have never seen sunburn in person. All of my Neps say "diffuse bright light" so I am also unsure what "diffuse" means vs "direct".

    I grow my Nepenthes on a west facing window, it's still super bright though since my oldest plant has reddish leaves (not sunburn, its a deep kind of purplish red throughout the whole leaf.)
    in October, November and December we get about 7-9 hours of sunlight a day. Would that be enough for N. Rebecca Soper and a Ventrata?
    I was planning on moving it from an east facing window to a west facing window as the day progresses. As much as I'd love a grow light, the economic crisis here in Lithuania is quite severe, so not only are the grow lights expensive, but the power to use them is aswell 😅
    Thank you!

      Those are strong hybrids so it may works. Worst case scenario they won't pitcher for a few month but they will stay healthy. I did that for years. ;)

  • @divingaquarist

    Due to energy prices, using a powerful light like that for my plants will bankrupt me within a few months. 😭 I'm currently using 9 and 12W LED shoplights. My small Nepenthes get around 2500-3000 lux, according to my phone. It dóes colour up my N. 'Rebecca Soper', and slightly burn my N. 'Gaya', so I guess it is enough for now. The light is like 20cm above the plants, so I guess I can get away with that.
    I realised this summer that the sun is too high up in the sky to get into my windows, due it being blocked by the balcony above me. In autumn/winter, the sun is low enough to shine onto my windowsill, but most of the days it's cloudy then, so that doesn't help.
    I'm thinking of a lighting system for the bigger plants that doesn't break the bank in electicity costs, but I fear that I can't skimp on this.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  Před rokem +2

      If your Nepenthes is colouring nicely and is pitchering, you have the good amount of light ;)
      But LED aren't expensive to run when you do the math. Here is a Google Doc to help you see exactly how much you spend: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1vMPGZn4k6t_6xz6l9wzBYOoUzhkChyQOQ4n5MeAlor8/edit?usp=sharing

      You can microwave the sphagnum for 2 minutes, increase the airflow my also help. If the seeds didn't sprout yet, spray with hydrogen peroxide. if they have sprout then remore themold and wait for the seedlings to be bigger then you can repot in 1-2 months. That happen all the time....
