After over a year of using M8 as my first tracker, I know it’s a keeper.
I can't stress enough how unique support this boutique device has. Trash80, one freaking guy, is sitting on a Discord full of dedicated people forming a welcoming place full of ideas and resources without any gatekeeping.
Updates are frequent and come with new features and even new synthesizers. It’s bonkers. I have never seen something like this before.
Deluge is kind of the same story.
@@arkngle and I also have the Deluge and can't decide to sell it
Fucking love stories like this. Passionate, healthy communities are what make the world go round
mikey303 is a national treasure, so kind, so talented!
❤ 100%
This is what I imagined hackers did when I was 8 years old. As an adult this is epic.
the UI of that thing is phenomenal. I never used trackers before and had my doubts but it was one of the most effortless and quick learning phases I ever had with any gear.
Damn, he is going hard on that thing!
Massive respect 👊
11:06 Crikey. I honestly wasn't expecting to hear Afx style acid. I was expecting chiptunes 🥲
that design though! take my money 😮
Amazing video!! Thank you to both of you guys!
Mikey rules. He sold me his NERDSEQ and i use it everyday. glad to see you shout him out
That was awesome. Thank you very much.
I met these guys at SynthPlex really awesome guys. And the M8 is still just as mind blowing sense the day I got it. I wish I could have used the M8 arcade cabinet they built.
mikey is one of my favorite humans on the planet. i hope more and more people know mikey's kindness and absolute masterful control over everything he touches. my life wouldn't be the same without having met him! this was super cool to see on my recommended tonight
This was the best stream ever! (only slightly based here).
Fantastic video! Going to be going back to this one a few times!
Superb. I like this format. OT/M8 for newsbies.
Amazing session ! Thanks for all the sharing Mikey303 !
Glad you enjoyed it
That track he plays after plugging in the controller is monster
Cable Chaos, beast beats
Shout-out to Mikey303, you are a true wizard man!!! ♥
Amazing songs!
this is the first video ive seen on your channel where i just want to watch and have little GAS or desire to buy the product. this is so cool but i just don't have the brain space to learn this workflow, yet -- the portability, form factor and sound though -- holy $#!+ -- also that 'bundle' -- to collaborate!
INSANE tracks at>2h in. Awesome ! 👏👏🎶
mikey303 was so cool great to get his input, he is so chill and a master on the m8
So agree about the music processing! Rough rugged and raw, thats f*king hardcore!
What a great video! It was like watching two old friends geeking out about the M8. You should invite mikey back at some point 🙂!
That's the plan!
@@EZBOT_ cool! Can't wait 👍
Lovely sitdown and cool energy you share :)
Thank you! 🙏
never thought I watch these stream but after a couple moths watched twice wish I can find more content like this
31:00 WE HAVE ENTERED THE MIKEYZONE
awesome, absolutely love the M8 and this was great fun to watch. honestly for all the impressive things trash80 has done, the drum kit is *so* good. of course dude is an FM programming monster as well somehow
Love the mention of UK tracker history. ❤ My man.
I am a long time producer and must say thank you two this was amazing. Mikey303 wow king. I want to go to a class. I’m a nerdseq and renoise person and dang. I might sell my 10k modular and rethink things. Thangs yall
14:45 they are speaking about the Retrokits RK-008 here, in case anyone else wanted to check this awesome device out!
So funny for me to see people voluntarily restrict themselves to limitations that my brother and me HAD TO suffer from back in the 90s! :-)
I remember how much I was flashed when suddenly there were 8 (!) tracks instead of only 4. My brother created a whole hip hop album with only 4 tracks on the Fast Tracker that I had shown him on the Amiga 500.
Today most people can't imagine what that was like; we have almost unlimited possibilities (tracks, fx, etc) and rarely problems such as sound card driver breakdowns and blue screens.
I am so happy to finally be working with relatively stable laptops and software that doesn't limit me to 8 tracks and cryptic number dialling anymore!!
But yea, limitations can be a helper and that little piece of hardware looks like it's huge fun to experiment with it.
I hope it's not "full stereo" (4 channels left only, 4 only right) like my Amiga back then. That was the only thing that was annoying me a bit at that time. And when the man from the studio didn't want to understand that the 4 bit sound HAS to sound like that :-)
really good. like this free form content a lot.
Well, that’s what you call a goddam ffff artist,,, brilliant! Absolutely mind blowing. ❤
OMG it's so cool to hear that trash80 was aiming to replace/emulate the Octatrack because the OT is what started my renaissance of gear lust about 10 years ago and I find that the M8 outperforms the OT as a "sequence and record external gear" device.
That's the tone thing I wanted the OT to do which it couldn't due to not being able to stream-record long audio and being limited to the RAM.
The clip launching is also much more versatile on the M8.
M8 to the rescue, I love it. (I got mine just recently and am starting to get into it more now)
Straight outta the machine og ✌️
Renoise is awesome! I use it all the time.
Serious skills there !
OK, I just bought the BRK version, now waiting for it to arrive ! 😎
Awesome, so much information here! Thanks. Also, I love that M8 theme on the thumbnail is it available to download anywhere please?
Mikey is so rad.
I need to get an M8 again… 😅
Never sell it when u watch videos of it u will want it back
absoluttly listening and dance music
Holy calamity scream insanity...
That last track is epic
Nice session! Although I don't own a m8, I was also into chiptune something like 15 years ago, time flies. I still have my gameboy with nanoloop, lsdj and arduinoboy. The m8 feels just like a natural evolution to it. bringing it to the modern world with synth engines, stereo and proper sampling features. I'm probably trying out headless but it's crazy how many features the m8 gets from version to version of the firmware so yeah, gonna save some cash, gonna buy this thing or maybe the next step with usb-c? ;)
The connection of jungle and tracker has many points. You have to keep in mind, in the 80/90's, akai samplers were way too expensive for most of the people. Some guy in germany came with the tracker idea for making a soundtrack for a game on the amiga, that's how it started, that's why it was sample based cause the amiga soundchip was bad compared to the c64 SID chip. trackers are really great for jungle cause u can be super precise with your breaks and stuff and u can manipulate each step. playing snares and breaks backwards and that jungle snare pitch roll was used because of how the tracker worked.
You should really get one!
@@cokomairena yeah, I guess^^
Kinda funny, I still remember a sleepless session more than a decade ago with LSDJ and korg DS-10, wishing the gameboy was able to play better samples on its wave channel. Don't get me wrong, its chiptune sound is awesome but yeah I wished for more back then.
Now I need to save up some money, that mpc live 2 was expensive as well but that LSDJ muscle memory is still intact after all these years I figured out some months ago with my gameboy ^^
@@cokomairena got one a few weeks ago, it's even better than I expected it to be! Such a fun device with so many features which make it easy to work with like auto save, super fast turn on time etc.!
This is so interesting and edu on a number of levels and I don't even have an M8 - its also f cool
lol that track at around 1:29:00 slaps so hard. Love how ezbot is smiling to himself at how hard that track slaps and mikey just keeps on talking like normal.
Omg that bass
I’ve watched this about 10 times now. Please get Mikey back for more videos.
It’s in the works!
Couldn’t agree more. More musical guests!
3:32 awesome! That’s exactly what I want to know.
dAAAAAAAUMMMMM! That track at the end tho 🤯
“I am exited for them to come out with a usb-c version with a larger screen” … welp. Thats what I pre-ordered this week. I got a teensy and have been doing headless. I got it set up on an emulator console that looks like a gameboy for now. I had it running on my steam deck and mac, but having the dedicated hardware will be great. I never thought I was enjoying working with a tracker till the Polyend Tracker got deep discounted and now I am here.
I’m seriously considering selling my Digitone to fund an M8… I also rarely use it and haven’t used a tracker since FT2 in 98/99. I dreamed of having a portable tracker back then. The closest was the Yamaha QY70 but it was midi only I think. Still the features of the M8 are what I want in the Digitakt. It’s like the DT+Sy+OT all in one.
That first song at the end was super dope! Any way of obtaining it somewhere. It's not cable chaos, is it?
That was a great watch!! Glad to see Mikey303 on here, hes a wizard 🪄 And yeah thanks EZBOT for that Chord preset, grabbed it from the discord and use it all the time 😁
Awesome!
Genius! ;)
How should I sample my td-3 to have ”same” sample that Mikey uses on his 303-squelch technique in midway of the video? Or better yet, can I buy/get mikey’s sound pack somehow? Tried to search from m8 discord with no luck/wrong search words 😅 This was great, I come from ft2-era vis Renoise and have had m8 for year and it’s absolute swiss knife keeper! ❤️🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Guys that was a very enjoyable video!! Well done and nice to pick up some cool tricks! Too bad I don't really have time to get too deep into it :-( About the fact that the NerdSEQ doesn't have all the (same) FX commands etc...I really don't want to copy the M8 or whatever but do my own thing (plus not everything makes sense in the same way). Of course many things are and will be very similar with the NerdSEQ and the M8. I talked with Timothy about it and this works also in both ways and we are cool about it. And there is still much stuff I want to add...
About the REP command, it is actually sort of there. The ADD/SUB/MUL/DIV commands do sort of the same thing but then with the 4 possible calculations which is applied to the last used FX+Value. It does not repeat automatically for the upcoming steps but if you use it from a table you can let it auto repeat.
Anyways...keep up the good work and too bad Mikey that you left the NerdSEQ boat (for now!)
💚 Trackers 4ever!
Thomas! I love the NerdSEQ so much; thank you for your hard work on its development. I hope you don't feel like I was calling XOR out at all. I just love that REP command, haha! I'm excited for the NerdSEQ portable too and hope to get my hands on one when it's ready. NerdSEQ is 100% my favorite eurorack sequencer :) Thank you for stopping by and for taking the time to comment
If I ever return to Eurorack, the NerdSEQ will go right back into my rig 🙏 thank you for everything!
@@EZBOT_ oh no worries, all easy :) Thanks for the nice content!
Because I have that kind of audacity!.. GOOD ONE!
Thanks a lot: super entertaining video! Is there a way to ”lock” the keys of the m8, so that you don’t accidentally press them while playing?
no but there is a temp save and undo command
it started kicking at 30:57
1:22:15 Wow, you guys really got that one right 😂
Iv watched this like 3 times.
That track at 2:10:00 is INSANE so sick
For the time-stretching stuff at 22:13, it seems like the procedure here just changes pitch to find a tempo you like. Is that right? Or is there a pitch correction step somewhere that I missed or that wasn't carried through in this vid?
Trying to figure out if there is a general purpose time-stretch method other than the LFO trick that you and Mikey prefer (for both breaks and vocal melodic samples) that can be done purely on device, or if in this example it just accepting the pitch change because the sample is percussive.
Yeah that is what we're doing here. I generally do not like the pseudo time stretching LFO because of how it makes the sample sound. Gets too crusty. For me, I would rather use the Pitch and Fine command until the tempo sounds close enough. That's the old school way to do it :)
@@mikey303 As a new M8 user, It was super inspiring to see your workflow and techniques in this vid! Much love for sharing and for you taking the time to clarify.
1:16:38 - This track is sick! Is it available anywhere?
arent these things just fancier versions of the amega tracker carts? basically an interface for a audio synth chipset?
hELLO.
thanks for the video.
where can i get this custom 303 instrument for m8 ?
I’ve had my eye on the m8 for awhile but the waitlist was so gnarly, can you get one now?
preorders are open now for second batch, they just shipped the first batch and they're making them like crazy this year
@jimreplicant yes! Preorders will be shipping end of this month/next month! Get one ASAP!
Very informative. Where can I get/buy those synth drum packs from Trash80?
on the dirtywave website in the shop ;)
@@de_krocky awesome! Thank you
MOD music will never die.
Is there a link to the trash80 drum kit / pack discussed around 12:30 somewhere?
I think it's on the Dirty Wave website
Question then if you havethe budget to buy a M8 or a Octatrack beside portability wich one do you choose ? 😊
For me, Octatrack
Mikey303!
Did he released its sample based 303 instrument? 🙏🙏
Nice guys nice video ❤
He shared it on my discord if you search tracker channel
One word: Impressed.
where can I find the song @17:09!? it's so gooooood!
its cool, a novelty to me, since renoise holds down most and laptops can be so tiny nowadays. still watching but I assume it loads .mod and ft2 files ?
i see the dirtywave m8 is alway out of stock... is there a way to order it ?
@EZBOT do we get the 303 preset Mikey made?? 😅
It was uploaded on the M8 discord under resources
@@CrustyRetro yep, finally was! Ty!
You were right the first time... Dmitry has to go to Tracker Prison. Where he will spend the next 20 years forced to create music on an Amiga 500 with Noise Tracker, and a 6 sample library. :P He gets an alotment of 3 floppy disks to work with. Two of them write-protected.
SKILLZ^
Mikey should do more tutorials
Very cool, features & price ? Thx
???
either utube or channel is deleting price and weblink, google dirtywave, preorders are open now
I think they are $600, I don’t know, I bought it years ago.
$599 plus shipping. Plenty of videos going over features, but this video went over a ton!
I tried the quick render and set velocity to 7F but the didnt make the volume unity with original track rows that i rendered from
This needs to be investigated further because I think it's important info. Drop a line in the M8 discord
@@EZBOT_ unfortunately I'm not a discord member. But had you tried it yet? If so did it work for you? Because in the video it sound like his render was at unity volume..
Since the beginning of the launch I try to get one of it. But it's constantly sold out, no chance....
What is this keyboard like gadget under the M8?
Omx27
@2:04:12. My god.
Is a bigger M8 really coming?
I believe so, I don’t know when
We all want a balls deep clone
Looks amazing , sounds very good , looks very portable , however this way of working is a world in its own.
Not mine. I am watching the video explaining everything and I still don't feel like trying it out. I enjoy how well you are using it
but gee that is some brainiac approach !
Peace
It would be interesting to make a device which uses M8-style grid-based UI with similar navigation but without tracker workflow.
Does he make tutorial videos? Please do
Mikey? Not really
Please let him know we need him to teach the community.
1:46:51 how did you load a new project and it loaded up a template with 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 all laid out?
Create a new project, and then create a template that you want all of your new projects to look like, then save and name it TEMPLATE, and then shut off the M8, put the SD card in a computer, move the TEMPLATE.m8s file to the SYSTEM folder, eject and put the Sd card back in the M8, and you'll see the template load whenever you create a new project!
@@solmare_WOAH. I thought he just saved a project as template in songs and then renamed/resaved it every time, it's crazy you can do that!
Thanks!!🔥❤@@solmare_
The 303 sounds more like an Alpha Juno.
1:23:50 like if you have been there also😅
sounds better doubled up lol
Haha, this is an ordinary tracker from the 90th (i.e. Impulse Tracker, Scream Tracker and so on) before any Cubases
Except that it is battery powered, a stereo sampler, and has built in synthesis among a bunch of other features. It’s based off LSDJ.
Without intending to be rude, I completely disagree with the notion that there are only two kinds of music - dance and listening (as mentioned in the interview). I believe that, like any other aspect of life, there are as many kinds of a certain thing as one's perception is able to discern. If a composer sees only two kinds of music, then indeed, for him, there are only two.
Great point!
miscreant son of octatrack
I am just glad it had a baby
