Meet the NFL’s First Male Cheerleaders

- College and high school cheerleading teams have been co-ed for years. But NFL cheerleaders were always only women (with the exception of some male stuntmen) until 2018. That’s the year professional dancers Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies auditioned for the L.A. Rams cheerleading team, made the squad and led the way for other men to follow. Peron and Jinnies capped off their first cheer season by making history yet again when the L.A. Rams played in the Super Bowl, and they became the first male cheerleaders to perform at the big game. We talk to the guys, who are both gay, about the audition process, the thrill of breaking boundaries and the responsibility they feel as role models for men as well as the LGBTQ+ community.

I legitimately thought that male cheerleaders were already a thing and was so confused why this made news. Like I always see them in movies, shows, cartoons and even magazines, there are even cheerleader competitions here in my school were the teams would look for boys who were good at dancing and flexible

I think this is actually cheer dance and not cheerleading they are kind of two different sports
They were a thing but it wasn't as the main focus. They were kind of like an assist to the cheerleaders and they didn't do all this stuff that these guys do. These guys are pretty much copying the women, which is slightly unsettling to be honest
He's a male cheerleader playing the part of a female cheerleader. Male cheerleaders in college and high school is a different thing. They act masculine. Sorta.
As a non US who watched 'bring it on' movie, I thought it was already a thing male cheerleader in the US.

18matts Funny, your comment made me think about the episode of Star Trek TNG where they visited a planet like that. The women were larger and more dominant. They also held all the positions of power. Many cheerleading groups do, but the NFL's group didn't until now.
Yeah most all star cheer groups and high school cheer squads have been accepting guys for ages. It wasn't really a thing in NFL teams until recently as the person above me said.
Because the NFL aren’t really cheerleaders they are dance teams. The don’t tumble and do gymnastics.

Um, there always been male cheerleaders. Former president George W. Bush was a cheerleader at Yale, and many times, male cheerleaders were gymnastics people during the off-season.

My 16 year old Son is the only male Cheerleader on his high school cheer/competition dance cheer team and also part of the LGBTQ+ community! They have taken 2nd in their last 2 competitions and I couldn't be more proud! I sent this clip to him to show how empowering this is, for him!!!!!
