Work Contracts Are Worthless In Estonia As A Foreign Worker (Myths Dispelled)

  • In this video I lay out the myths of being a foreign worker in Estonia and the rights that guarantees you. It very clear there are two different standards for Estonians then as foreign workers, and likewise you will be evaluated and judged differently depending on which category you fall into. Be aware just like in America there is no loyalty to you as a foreign worker here even with a contract. These contracts often mean very little and you can be "left high and dry" if you are not prepped accordingly in these situations.

I am a foreigner from Iran, I have been here for 4 years and what he is saying is 80% accurate ... about being looked at differently in a negative way in Estonia is true .. in the streets and other public locations but this is the case more for older generations not the younger generation... regarding work environment, I can only talk about IT related companies ... this is NOT the case in It companies.. I have worked in 2 different companies in IT field and I have never been treated wrong or non-equal even once .. BUT .. I have heard and seen that people in other industries are being treated differently.

@@arabiclive007 yes ofcrouse, the short answer is it depends on your home country if you're from Europe yes it is easy to find a job here, but if you're from Asia (middle east, east Asia etc.) it is very hard almost impossible, the quickest way to find a job here is to apply for studying here, study for masters or PhD after you're done you look for job, it would take you less than a week to find a job

Yes, there are 2 types of contracts here and "töövõtuleping" really doesn't offer too much protection. Coming to Estonia with the idea of getting a low-skilled entry-level job is a bit risky but obviously, some people are making it and even manage to study at the same time. I am judging by hardworking people at Bolt and Wolt which are quite visible on the streets of Tallinn

I don't know the context but u can sign 3 types of contracts here. One of them is normal actual contract (tööleping) with all benefits and you can't be fired without a reason. Next one i don't know that much about (töölevõtuleping) but it's kinda like contract so u must do something in required time, how you do it or if you hire someone to help you etc. is your decision. Then there is the last one (käsundusleping), never sign it if you want stable job. With that you don't have almost any benefits even sick leave. And your boss can let you go with really small notice. What i think is they make many foriginers sign the last one so they fuck you over.
Also jobs where you must talk with local clients like waiter or cashier, the law requires at least communication level of Estonian.

I have a good life in Estonia as a student as i wanted to live there and work because i want to serve back for the country as they claimed "shortage of labour". I'm definitely a qualified for most jobs in Estonia because i have skills and great education but i have no job offer. I'm willing to take lower salary than twice as what I can get in my country. I learnt their language and pass A2, but i couldn't go to B1 because my permit almost ended. So i return home as nothing I can do there. I got a remote work in my country and go to Estonia and stay every 3 months with my visa free access. I don't give up looking for a job there but after years, my interest becomes thinner. Maybe someday I will finally say goodbye to the country.

Woww, someone has had a bad day.
This person in video seem not to understand how things work and also do not understand the culture that Estonians are neutral/content and foreners (that do not know Estonian culture) often misunderstand neutrality to to negativity.
Your own bad experience (seems to be because have no understanding of things) is what you express not the actual situation, you and your brother, it that all the example sample ?
I have worked personally with dozens and contacts with hundreds forein workers in Tallinn, they do not seem to have these problems (been years in same positions or even got promoted), some of my good friends who work in Talinn are foreners, most have been there for many years and they love it and never want to leave.

In my opinion it’s time to let Estonia be a nice small Nordic country. Estonia very deserves to be a Nordic country, because Estonia has done a lot of work, we have many smart people, we are good at digital things, we have northern lights and we are very similar to Finland and other Nordic countries like: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland. We are not similar to Latvia and Lithuania and the other Eastern Europe countries. It’s time to stop calling Estonia Eastern Europe country and Baltic country and forget all this terrible, rude and mean Soviet times. Let’s just stop this Eastern Europe and Soviet stigma thing and let Estonia turn the new page and let them be a normal small Nordic country next to Sweden and Finland!!! Estonians call themselves the Nordic country and many other people and tourists had also said that Estonia should be a Nordic country, because Estonian people are Finnic people not Balts and we are more similar to Scandinavia. Yes many people had agreed with that Estonia must belong to the Nordic group and seperate from Latvia and Lithuania. They don’t even need these countries, because Estonians communicate more with Finns and other Scandinavian countries. Estonia will be a very good partner for the other Nordic countries. We will do a very great work and we will be very strong!!!

I work as a lawyer in estonia and im estonian and i have to agree with you (unfortunately). Thats why its made very easy to issue a claim against your employer to the labor dispute committee (and its free!). Estonian labor laws are very strict- employer is not allowed to end labor contract without a reason and these reasons are limited and these reasons must be legal. I have represented many labor dispute cases in the aforementioned commitees and in court (if you are not satisified with the decision of the committee you can appeal to County Court and its also free). Usually these instances favor the empoyees (employer must prove that his/her actions were legal). Also there have been many cases where the companies have tried or even made people to sign athorisation agreements or other service agreements in order to hide the real employment relationship (as labor laws are strict) and labor dispute committee and also court have said that this is illegal thus re-qualified these contracts to employment contracts and have issued benefits to the employee. I strongly recommend to all employees to as legal adivse in any cases where there is a chance that the company is acting illegally and turn to the dispute committe or court (its easy and you can also seek free legal aid in terms of representation).

Do NOT go to Estonia to do accounting work. Everything outside of specialist IT work is bad pay. Also the capital has become expensive. Add onto that its freezing cold and not many ppl and you are likely to be miserable. So ... short answer is unless you can get a job paying more than 50000 USD do not even consider it. India has much better opportunities and lifestyle today esp in some of the major cities.
