Not only was George Harrison's son ok with it, so was Tom Petty and everyone else. This is what Rock was all about. It's not a goddamned funeral, it's a tribute and Prince was honoring what Rock was about and what George Harrison was about in the context. Lighten up people. If Tom Petty was alive, he'd tell everyone to go take a dump in their hat. Prince nailed it, at The Rock & Roll hall of fame honoring a deceased. This is not the society of morticians.

Prince is such a HUGE part of my musical life and growth, due to the sheer amount of work he produced and styles he played in. He opened my eyes to what music was all about, and I’m so grateful for it, and him - he’s sadly, and sorely missed 💜
P.S. Regarding the throwing of the guitar at the end - he’s not throwing it up into the rafters, he’s throwing it above the eye-line of the camera so it appears that’s what he’s doing.
He’s actually throwing it up and towards the big guy at the front of the stage who held him up when he leant backwards off the stage during his solo.
This would definitely be one of Prince’s guys because there’s no way he’d do it with a ‘normal,’ crowd because he wouldn’t know how it would go, and it’s not going to look good if he gets pulled into the crowd mid-solo.
If you notice after he’s thrown the guitar, Prince looks down to this guy to make sure he’s caught the guitar (his favourite Fender!), before he turns and walks off the stage.
The camera angle is slightly off at this point as well so it looks like the guitar is being thrown straight up, when it is actually being thrown up and outwards.
If you watch the newer directors version/cut of this performance, you can just about see it coming down right at the end (but you’ve got to be quick to catch it! 😉) 👍

See the version from The Concert For George from 2002, with Eric Clapton, who played the original guitar solo on the Beatles album. Guitarist Marc Mann, who played the original Clapton rhythm parts on The Concert For George version, duplicated Clapton's original album solo before Prince played. Concert For George had many of George's musician friends paying tribute to him by playing his songs, (plus Monty Python and an Indian music segment), and the tone was that of love and respect. The concert had many high points, such as Clapton and McCartney covering "Something". George's son Dhani Harrison has said he isn't thrilled by how the original spiritual intent of the song has been overshadowed by guitarists using it as a vehicle for showing off, and trying to top the original solo. On the other hand, George himself said he liked Jeff Healey's cover. Here is what Dhani said in a radio interview :

Huh? Prince was a legend then. He was inducted THAT SAME night. He was specifically requested by Dhani Harrison to be in the tribute (a good indicator that Harrison himself felt the same way). How is it that folkx don't know Prince's legendary guitar play? He literally played guitar and every single instrument in ALL his albums (check his album credits). GLOBALLY, Folkx compared him to Beethoven be and Mozart in his prime (and he MASTERED more instruments than either). Every other legend on that stage ALREADY knew he was great and ALREADY had said so in various interviews in the last few decades, calling him the greatest alive. Even check Clapton, old Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Eddie Van Halen interviews where they talk about him in the 80's, the end of their lives (Vaughn and Van Halen) and through the the millennium. I disagree vehemently. What Prince did was disrespectful. You can show out a bit sure, but what Prince did was showing off and saying through this performance "Look at me." I matter more." He ended up making his performance about himself showing up a dead person especially the likes of an all-world icon like former Beatle George Harrison. This is horrible. No one talks of George after seeing this...it's all about Prince...Prince...Prince. I really lost almost all my respect and have very little left for the human being Prince. His work speaks for itself. At this venue, for this occasion, he was as awful a human being as anyone could be. To take away the focus and step on a dead man's honor this way is just unforgivable. To see a proper tribute to George I'll provide you with a link to "The Concert For George" tribute that was done exactly one year from George's death. I will even provide a link to this very song and how friends and colleagues truly give tribute. czcams.com/video/CrTMc2i6Lzc/video.html In case I didn't get my point across I say; "FUCK PRINCE" on this occasion.

George Harrison’s son (on acoustic guitar behind Prince) seems OK with it.

We understand your perspective, but it looks like we will have to agree to disagree.
Would you prefer that he half-assed his performance and didn’t give it his all?
Everybody knows what kind of artist he was, and, while they may not have known exactly what he was going to do, his reputation definitely preceded him.
If you should be upset with anybody it should be with those that decided to book him. Seems like a waste of energy to be upset with Prince for being Prince
We like to imagine that George would have loved that solo, and it seems like the other legends on the stage (who were mostly personal friends of George) had a great time being there.

@@SightAfterDark I'm sorry too. I did go back and edit my statement a bit to say there is a difference between "Showing-Out and "Showing-Off" That's all. Prince crossed that line IMHO. He should have just been honored and humbled to have been invited to be on that stage... I think the only proper response to my opinion on this is probably "OK Boomer" because my sensibilities come to me from a different time and place where boundaries were more sharply defined lol

Haha no need to be sorry! Like we said, we may not agree, but we do respect your opinion and your right to voice it. Thanks for watching!

Never ever liked Prince. He has nothing to do with rock n roll. I think Lemmy had it right about him. Can he play? Yeah. Does he have manners or common sense. No. Good Riddance.

he's not rock and roll. he's funky dude. that's why his playing guitar is always in complete connection to the rhythm. and he's not a guitarist, that's why he is always following and dialoging with melody and armony. he is a musician dude, that's what rock and roll is about, if you are not living in the seventies.

Why don't you go storm the Capitol with the rest of your inbred crew. He is beyond rock and roll. When Cats like Miles Davis the definitive artist of the 20th Century, Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams the greatest drummer to ever live are into you. Who cares what some Hoosier who wouldn't know any type of high brow music if it whacked him up his head!!!

In an interview Tom Petty did , Prince didn't rehearse with them at all, he didn't get a chance to. He was supposed to do all of the guitar solos since he was being inducted as well. Every time he stepped forward to do his solo Marc Mann took over all of them. Prince told the producer to let Mann do the solos and he would do the outro. Prince left and never rehearsed with them but assured the producer not to worry. They had no idea what he was going to do. The times where Prince kept looking at Tom Petty he was taking direction to see if he should keep going. Tom said he was continually nodding his head at him telling him to go on because he knew he was making musical history. He described it as one of the most satisfying musical moment he had in his history of making and producing music. Prince also had a guitar tech catch his guitar when he tossed it and hand it to Oprah.
