- Is the F-14 Tomcat Still in Service? The F-14 Tomcat was the primary air superiority fighter, fleet defense, and reconnaissance aircraft for the US Navy. On 22 September 2006, the aircraft was retired, and the Boeing F-18 Super Hornet took its place.

Very true we had VF 11 and VF 14 on the Carl Vinson in 1996
The should make a navalized F 15 EX for fleet defense, until NGAD becomes operational.
We have f35s for that. F15EX/ E are already in the navy mix. Marines use them just not off carriers. Fleet defense isn't really done by aircraft. But the super hornet is more then capable. We have to remember Agis missle cruisers / nuclear attack subs / and other assets among the carrier group. It's not a lone carrier that needs aircraft to protect it. It IS the weapon system and is offensive others need to defend AGAINST it.
