Steve Albini is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer, and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman, and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago.

This Interview was filmed for the DIT documentary, initially the concept was to create a compilation of interviews about DIY music around the world to explain how DIY works nowadays and to give an insight for younger musicians that could perhaps help them to choose their own road, this movie played in almost every possible venue that would be interested in having it and took many forms, depending on the requirements of the event or venue.
but the idea was to also upload all of the interviews in full, thereby giving the option for everyone to see all of the great ideas and stories. Finally after many years we can put some time into re-editing all of the interviews to upload them separately, I hope you like it.
Currently we're filming livestreaming concerts at the independent venue called OCCII in Amsterdam, and other music videos & political interviews with a new project called Bad Vibes.

I don’t see how any up and coming musician makes it on music anymore unless they already have money or connections. Not saying that you can’t but I imagine it has to be extremely difficult.
Steve is an interesting man. I knew he was a Producer/Studio Engineer but didn't realise he was an active musician. Can anyone give me the name of any Band Steve is in?

Steve was rich regardless, Electrical Audio is worth millions of dollars and he always had bands from all over the world.
He was probably the cheapest worldclass engineer available but still charged 900$ a day before studio time.
No one said he was effing poor but he wasn't a millionare either.

He did damn well but $900 a day isn't far off from trade wage. He had periods where he struggled, running a business like Electrical is very expensive.
$900 a day is close to operating cost for a constantly in demand studio, mostly labor. steve famously took to playing professional poker to support the studio. got pretty damn good at it from what i heard. i hardly doubt the man was considerably wealthy. he worked his ass off every damn day. no time for spoils in that way of living, aside from making the occasional record for yourself. not a bad life, all considered

I don't get that argument... like if some racist Nazi group uses Shellac music as their theme song, he will find out about it somehow. I'm sure he wouldn't be OK with that..
Another otherwise great interview, good setting, good lighting, good sound yet ruined by bad camera work and editing. Example: Why does the camera-woman step in the shot and why was that shot of her left in? It’s distracting from your subject and looks unprofessional. Additionally the out-of-focus and unstable shots from her only distract from the information & don’t add anything of value to the video, even if they are considered artistic and are currently in vogue.

cuz it was filmed on tape, at the time we didnt have a camera, but we really wanted to ask Steve some questions, so we borrowed the cameras from a school, and the friend who filmed it was a teacher at that school, later the tapes were damaged but we tried to retrieve as much as possible to put it together, the audio worked fine but the shots were damaged, so we had to cover it with what we had left of that footage, maybe i shouldve used photos instead but i thought itd be best to use footage of that day, ofc its not cinema quality but then again it was what we had at the time.

I like almost everything Albini has to say, but he conflates caring about nothing but money with capitalism. Actually, he is a capitalist. He makes money. He employs people. He saves money, etc.
The alternative to capitalism is communism, in which an individual receives money from the government and only the collective owns property or can make money.
Under such a system (and such systems have always proven to be maintauned by brutal police states) everyone is poor (which means equality is ever-present) and an individual can do nothing to further his lot in life.
Given that the only thing Albini seems to mean when he says 'capitalism' is making everything subservient to maximal profit, it would be better, clearer, if he'd simply say that.
We can all agree, surely, that money matters but that we shouldn't let it be the supreme king of our lives.
That's really about trying to live deeper, more meaningful lives.
nah dude, he's an anarchist. Participating in capitalism to survive in society doesn't make someone a capitalist. And communism isn't the only alternative to capitalism.
