OOh my GOd. i dunno how to express my feeling..all that i can say is ..AM the lucky person on the earth to be born in india.. to be able to listen/from the land of such heavenly music/musicians
I am a music lover without indepth knowledge on kerthanas, ragas etc. I love this rendition, though at some places feel violin's voice should be on top of the western instruments like guitar and drums. Absolutely peaceful hearing the violin. Congratulations Madam.
One of those rare fusions without confusion! You have really retained the poignant mood of the original krithi and I really appreciate that. I hope you can do more of such beautiful work. Best wishes!
Took me to heaven ...
Beautifully rendered bhajan. When we split the hair on Raga, we miss the whole 'Bhava' of this bhajan. Tyagaraja would be happy if we see the 'Bhava' that is the ultimate 'Sadhan' (Tool) for your 'Sadhya' (Objective). Enjoy the 'Bhava'
Just the best version I've heard!
God bless you so much that you dine with your great grandchildren in all the luxuries of that time...
Nice work. Very divine.
Ceylonese Tamil Canadians...Very proud of you guys. Keep it up.
Adbhutha! Its an amazing piece of work! May godess saraswati bless you all...
one of the amazing krithi in carnatic music......very nice playing...
the violin compiles the song into a river of emotions
Thank you for posting..god bless you.
When we split the hair on lyrics, we miss the whole point on Raga.
Creation of this raga "Jayanthasri" by Thyagaraja is an amazing act of virtuosity.
What is there to perfect the pentatonic scale of Hindolam? One might ask.
Thyagaraja inserted a panchamam during descent to perfect the perfection.
Such a deep passion in the violin !! Too Good......you guys rock :) Please keep posting such rare krithis.
This is my favorite song in the world today because it gives me so much feeling I love this song so much 😊❤💯💜💜💜❤️❤️❤️
very nice and a peaceful atmosphere I got when listening.

Excelent.. I loved it
This is fantastic , very very good work, it gives me peace when i listen after stressful work.
You guys are blessed, very warm regards and god bless
I am in love with this style. What intensity and sweeps. Seems like a surreal conversation between Tyagaraja and Raghava through the instrument of the violin and the violinist. Why this cover and hiding O Raghava.. Could keep listening for ever..
Thank you for this wonderful rendition.
I got sunk into the melody .fantastic! The day you were preparing for your B.Com exam in malleswram bangalore is green in my memory.
can you guess who?

Maruka (screen) + Elara (why) = Marugelara. This transformation is due to the 'sandhi' in grammar. 'Ka' then becomes "Ga'. Hope it helps everyone!
Imagine the feeling that the great Thyaraja wrote this. Involve yourself in the 'Bhakti'(devotion) that he prayed Lord Sri Rama with. A devotee calls his God with pure devotion, love, passion - once people understand this, we know where we stand in front of the legends!
I bow my head, and humbly prostrate to all those greats :)
Very melodious song.i love this kruthi
Master Piece!!!
And its good that you guys have given importance and maintained the "Bhava" or "emotion" of the krithi. For without that any music is like a corpse decorated with beautiful ornaments.

Love the music! Want to ask you about the video (the series of pics). Those look awesome too. Were these created for this video specially or are these out of some book ?
I guess that image is that of Lord Hanuman. I am not sure where to get this specific image though.
Beat sound mathalam , miruthangam that's like irunthal inum nalla irukum💓
jayanthasri raga...
Well Done
@vsu4u their based in toronto , canada :)
The song is fantastic, so full of karuna Rasa, the rendition of the song is soothing, but the background Noise (fusion drum of what ever it is ) is very annoying.
enni sarlu vinna tanivi teeradu
I hate people who hate Indian music and i do listen to american songs i even listen Japanese music. But some new generation kids (except me) hate Indian music. I did not say that only Indian music is great. Any music from any country is awesome. :)
@uptothe yeah u were pretty close...;)
Maruka Yelara Oo Raghava ? ? ? That's what it is . . .
Would it be possible to only upload the violin parts please?
+Akash Narendran I agree
Marukelara O RaghavaA
Marugu : Screen
Elara : Why
O Raghava (Lord Rama)! Why are you concealing yourself?
Marugela charachara rupa paratpara suya sudhakra lochana
Chara : the one which moves
achara : the one which does not move
Rupa : who has the form of
Paratpara : the one who is beyond all / everything
Surya : Sun
Sudhakara : Moon
Lochana : eyes
The Universe itself is your form! The Sun and the moon are your eyes.
Anni nivanusu antarangamuna dinnaga vedaki telisi kontinayya

Madini : in my mind

By deep contemplation, inquiry, and search, I have directly perceived that you are everything, and everything is within you. There is no place in my mind for any other God. Please protect me
Discussion of the Meaning :
In this song, Thiyagaiyar asks Rama to come before him. He says O Rama, why are you concealing yourself? Lord is concealed with a screen called maya. Only the lord can remove the screen. Thiyaggaiyar says that inspite of you having the screen, I have perceived you. Your trick of having the screen hence is useless. Why keep it any longer? Please remove it and come before me.
He also asks Rama, "Can you even try to conceal yourself?". There is clear proof of Lord's existence. There is the Sun and the moon - which are the two eyes of Rama. The world itself is there and functioning which again shows that the Lord is there. How can HE conceal HIMSELF?
The song reminds me of "Tera tiyagaraadhaa" in Goulibandhu where he asks Lord Venketeswara of Thirupathi as to when the screen will be lifted which is separating him and the God. While there is actually a screen which is placed between the idol of the God and us sometimes, Thyagaraja is not referring to that alone. He is also referring to the screen of maya which separates us from seeing the God.
It is said that one of the five things that the God does is "Thirodhanam" - which is "concealing". While typically "Thirodhanam" is attributed to Lord Shiva / Goddess Lalitha who carries out the five different activities (As Lalitha Sahasranamam says - "Pancha kritya parayana" : Srishti, Sthithi, Samharam, Thirodhanam & Anugraham), it looks as if Thiyagaiyar is referring to the act of "Thirodhanam" here as well as in the other song - tera tiyagaradha.
Lol the background music is from a casio basic keyboard, however its a nice tune
The violin is absolutely divine! God Bless! The arrangement is fine up until the pallavi, after which is overdone. The choice of the rhythm completely undermines the bhaava of the song. I wonder why they took such a fantastic lead rendition, and converted it into a "casio arrangement"....could they not getting better sounding backing instruments. Also, what is with the time signature? Did they change it from the pallavi to anupallavi (seems to go 1-2 1-2 1-2 1-2, rather than 1-2-3-4)....
+Enriching Exchanges I am wondering the same. What an eternally beautiful lead violin and what a disappointing backing! I love fusion but this backing does no justice to the lead and is totally contrasting as well as feels out of rhythm :( I love this krithi like my life, it always make my eyes wet. I always search for its versions.
What are you talking about? the time signature is the same with different overlays. I get if you want to try to criticize but please do it accurately instead of making up your own time signature pseudo-science. I find this conversation hilarious because violins were never part of the original carnatic ensemble as they were never native to India. I'm sure some curmudgeon from yesteryear many years ago had the same thing to say about the violin when it was first introduced...and now you are drooling over it. The irony is too much for me! Just for the record, i think all of it is very good with the Jazz undertones to a carnatic piece. Hello hand...meet glove.
The tranquility was somewhat lost when the drums kicked in. But i guess you don't seek fusion music for tranquility and peace. Would have loved to hear a predominant violin rendition with minimal background instruments
it is MaruGelara... not MaruKelara..
Thats the differences in languages ...
pragnashree munigoti dialects brah....
Jasprit Singh @ but the originality of the song ( in which language the song was originally composed ) needs to be preserved
@msivapalan. The word is "Marugelara" not "Marukelara". Thyagaraaja swamy is asking Rama why he is playing hide and seek with him. And in the anupallavi he tells that Rama present in the every object - animate or inanimate - in the entire universe.
Indirectly Thyagaraaja swamy is telling "Rama in spite of the fact that you are present in the entire universe, I am unable to see you with my eyes. Hence have mercy and stop concealing yourself from me."
Please could you post the notes for this,
Thanks X
Its really irritating to see some people bothering too much if its Marukelara or Marugelara.. Dont breach the creativity of the singers.. Its upto the singers discretion what pronounciation they choose.. Also Tyagaraja's language of compostition is so different from present.. so stop all criticizm.. listen and enjoy the music.. and if you want to listen to pure grammatical language.. go and sit in a Telugu literature class room.. you will listen akshara shudha language..
'It's upto the singers discretion what pronunciation they choose'.
Please, we must remain true to the krithi. Akshara Shuddhatha is part of what will make the krithi a true treat to hear; those who butcher lyrics in the name of so-called creativity are not achieving their goal, but merely destroying an age-old, hallowed composition for their own base cravings. Purity is paramount. If you do not care to pronounce the krithi properly, then it is apparent you do not care enough to learn it.
Chetan Truepower Basically, nobody is 'pronouncing' the song in violin. Even if someone is singing a song that is not in their mother tongue, the best attitude would be to appreciate the positive aspect of the singer's talent. That is what real music lovers do irrespective of the language that you understand or not.
Venkatesh Ramasubramaniam I agree with your reasoning. But I replied originally regarding Jak 's sweeping statements on creativity, and not regarding the violin or this specific rendering. 'Marugelara' as rendered in this video is beautifully done, and my sincerest compliments to the violinist.
But what irks me is the tendency of certain people to play fast and loose with that which is pure, that which has been rendered with bhaava and Bhakti beyond compare. Even if we do not quite understand the language when we listen, it should not matter to the singer. I merely feel it should be a singer's ethic and respect to the original composer when he/she sings and preserves the original spirit of that composition; that deep respect and fascination for the krithi adds a different dimension to the rendering, I think.
Chetan Truepower Agreed
i totally disagree with you. every lyrics has its meaning and give its beauty to the song, its music + lyrics= song. "wrong pronounciation" of lyrics is like "out of tune music". would you listen to a song which is "out of tune"?
More over.. its Instrumental.. How it matters if its Marukelara.. or Marugelara..
good attempt. saint Tyagaraja written this "Marugelaraa" (not "maruKelaraa" ) in Telugu. one of the finest.
with out modern beats as back ground music would have been much better, as the Violinist did splendid job.
extremely melodious
