Is this how most class in the US looks like? Why are they barely participating? Only a few ones does with one liner answers like 'yeah' and 'I also agree.' As a student who have lived in a competitive environment, I could sound an insufferable know-it-all throughout this class because of this hidden urge to answer all the teacher's questions and explain about it.

It's a pretty common argument for people to say morals are subjective. The problem hopefully becomes clear when you follow that argument out. A pedophile has their own moral standards and is likely to say there is nothing wrong with pedophilia. This doesn't mean they are right though, especially since someone else is hurt in the process. Instead, this points to the problem with claiming morality should be up to the individual. I don't think the student realized they were making that argument. In hindsight hopefully he's changed his mind. Most people don't want to look at morality as objective, with a standard that is outside of themselves, most commonly because of the conclusions which that leads us to.
