Here's the hard and honest truth of equality in employment in India from an Engineering student. I'm a final year Btech Mechanical Engineering student at VIT Vellore preparing for masters. Since it's placement season going on right now, I am qualified enough, I think, to give an account of what the criteria for recruiting people is for companies in India atm.
1) A lot of companies like Mercedes are hiring ONLY WOMEN for starters. Not even kidding about this one, this was written on their circular.
2) Most other companies are giving female students clear preferential treatment. Mechanical branch has mostly male students and only a few females. The placement scene, however, is that almost 95% of the female students have been placed at 10+ LPA companies while most males with far better grades, resumés and more hands on experience are being rejected, and rudely at that, simply for being men.
From what I can see around me, general category men are the most oppressed class in the nation atm.

What is gender equality?
Expectations:
Men and women are equally punishable on any crime committed.
Men and women get paid the same amount of money based on the same amount of work load they have to bear with.
Men and women are recruited based on their knowledge and skills and not their gender.
Reality:
Most of the laws imposed are in favor of women and even if a woman gets arrested, they are given less prison time compared to men.
Women get to be paid the same amount of money even though they didn't work as much as men did.
As an engineering student, I myself have witnessed a number of companies, in the name of equality, recruit students based on their gender and not on their talent.

But on the other hand what I said was mainly about urban areas where in the name of gender equality women are nowadays more privileged. First off, yes, she should have mentioned how in certain cases men are not given enough consideration and shed some light on the need to have equal grounds both way. But we all know that the right from all the people who wrote the question to the one who answered and those who were listening, everyone expected it on behalf of women. Right or wrong, she delivered the answer that was expected fro her in that setting.
Secondly, people here need to understand that many a women are still deprived of basic human rights let alone respect. Being treated as a object/entity has never changed in most parts of the world. We have at best put a shiny cover on the old problem but it still exists there.
Thirdly all the people talking about the women quotas and several other considerations given to women. Understand the fact that we need this because we don't have a proper male to female ratio. recruiters do not give job to women saying you can't devote yourself to it or you are not physically as fit etc. when in fact they can do a good job in that profession.
All I am trying to say is that men and women are built differently. We must respect this fact but at the same time make sure that no one is being devoid of what they love and are capable of handling for the sole reason of being born a certain gender

To all the men and women who are saying that it doesn't exist now a days. Lets me tell you.. I am a medical student i still sometimes see the disappointed faces of the parents and family members when a girl child is born. Some of them ever try to run away from hospital if a gurl if born.
Some of my girl friends had to get married early because parents could only afford to give education to the BOY.
One time i saw a pregnant woman at emergency room who was kicked by her drunk husband deliberately on her pregnant belly after which she ended up loosing her baby.

Will they deliberately join army in times of war for the country? No, they will not. See the example of Ukraine where women airlifted out but men left behind to fight. I can go on and on. In India feminism is still a little valid in rural areas where women are mistreated. But that's it, other than that there is no gender inequality.

As a woman, the term equality to me means getting the same support and understanding as a man. Especially from the elders of the family and the community. For instance, if a woman wants to study abroad or be financially stable before marriage, then please support her just like you would a man.
