Healing Waters at Kulen Mountain
Kulen Mountain national park is named after the holy mountain that is contained within its boundaries. The Khmer word Phnom translated into English means Mountain. Kulen is the name of a native Cambodian forest tree which bears a sour fruit. This national park is in the Province of Siem Reap and 49Km from town center of Siem Reap.
There are 3 ways to climb this mountain. Steps can be used, and there are about 1000 steps to reach the top of the mountain. The 2nd way is to pay for a ride in the back of a pickup truck to the top of the mountain. The 3rd way is to take a motorcycle up the mountain. The moto uses a different road than the truck.
Wat Preah Ang Choub is the name of the famous Pagoda located on the flank of Kulen Mountain. Located on the grounds of the Pagoda is a sacred pool and also a source for sacred water to drink at the feet of the Buddha in the Pagoda. The translation of the Khmer word Preah to English is Buddha.
As one would expect, this water first became recognized in ancient time by the Khmer people as a source of sacred power. Initially, the Khmer people followed Hinduism religion and holy water was used in Hindu religious ceremonies. The Khmer people became Buddhist and the sacredness of the water was still recognized by the people, and this belief is still held today.
At today’s Pagoda, these sacred healing waters are used in two different ways. This water is found inside the Pagoda flowing at the feet of the standing Buddha. The water that flows from the feet of the Buddha is used for drinking and internal healing.
The second way the water is used is by entering the pool and immersing the body into the healing waters. The water in this pool is always clean and changing, because the water flows from the mountain into the pool and out again. The pool is used by people, both old and young, monks and nuns. In summary, the people immerse themselves in the water to cleanse the body of disease causing spiritual sources.
