I did similar , used "Gorilla 18-ounce Wood Glue" , used galvanized plastic sheets as protective covering , unfortunately the bat did last for only couple of training sessions.
Gorilla glue is good only for surface and handle not for cracks
For cracks which glue is better

The wood you’ve used for filling in, is a very cheap wood, the bat is repaired and looks good on the camera, but in Actual this will break ery easily.

What’s the point of using the orbital sander
Only with obrit sander can sand the shapes like curves edges etc ... That's why we use obrit sander

Steel polishing compound mix with bee wax , if you are not using a polishing machine , its always recommended to melt the mixer before you use it .
