People need to shup up and listen to this guy, he's a great musician, but some people seem to expect him to be like John, shut up! He's good on his own way

He's pretty damn good. He brings out a lot of emotion in all his solos. The thing is they have shitty mixing so his guitar is always really quiet. That, or Josh just turns it down since he's a shy guy. He needs more courage, since he's an awesome musician!
I hate people who say the band is dead because John left. It just changed. For the better in my opinion, since it was already dead. They had no new content after 2006 and John felt like he didn't belong in the band anymore.
+Yzacata Realistically I think that it has always been the case that the guitar is less prominent. IDK why but yeah Josh is a great guitarist.
It's changed but it's not better IMHO. When John was off he was better than Josh at any time. When John was on there is basically nobody else in the world that could drive it like he could. No offense to Josh, but he'll never bring the creativity + energy to the LG slot in RHCP that JF did.

What I love about Josh's take on the Chili's solos is they have this weird kinda "mystic" vibe to them.
Everyone likes to seemingly criticize Josh. There's a reason Frusciante and Josh worked together a long time before Klinghoffer became lead guitarist. This kid is still young and he's only improving, give him a years time.

Josh seems to veer between being very very quiet and occasional bursts of sound with way too much distortion.
This video Is 3 years old. Before making any critics listen to the last concerts. He has improved a lot.

What I like about Josh is that his guitars seem so small and so light in his hands :)

I remember earliest John Frusciante's shows with the Chili Peppers, and he was nothing compare to his shows on ''By The Way'' and ''Stadium Arcadium'' tours. Give Josh some time !!!
You obviously haven't heard John playing on their earlier shows. He's a fucking blowtorch. Check out Subway to Venus live on Night Music c. 1990. Amongst many MANY others.
supermassivedwarf that wasn't his early days. he means his early days when he returned. john was not very good in 98 after rehab, good by 99 and then kept getting better until about 2006. he was a legend by about 2002. josh will be soon too if he keeps it up :)
muckscott He said "earliest" shows, presumably meaning pre-addiction, in which case supermassivedwarf is absolutely right. Not really fair to compare to 1998 Frusciante who was very fragile at that time and still slowly recovering and regaining his strength and faculties.
It kind of is though.. josh wasn't a guitarist, he was a musician that could play a bit of everything needed to a degree. a session musician, basically. so it is comparable to an 8 year hiatus. john came back and had to build his vocal chords and guitar skills just like josh is having to to become the next great singer and guitarist of the chili peppers. I think you'll be eating your word when the next album is released.

Except on the most iconic solos. One thing is to improvise and add your own style, another thing is to butcher the most exciting part of the songs by playing notes that don't match them.

That's why I'm With You sold about half as much in the first week as Stadium Arcadium? Saying John would have no future is ridiculous. The Chilis will never sell a million records with Josh on guitar. Adventures of Rain Dance was the biggest hit off I'm With You solely because of Flea.
jben3231 dude, did you cheked john's latest album? he is doing electronic music, he wouldn't be good for the band since he is not interested in doing something with them, get over it, be thankful that josh decided to play with them, he is probably the closest thing you'll had to john, since they played music together, the dude has to fill a big pair of shoes on the band, since everyone loves frusciante, but face it, josh is a fucking amazing, talented and creative guitarrist who probably will never get the respect he deserves since he is replacing john anthony motherfucking frusciante, give the guy some fucking respect
+A Fire Inside Josh is the best replacement, but the band isn't near as good to me personally. (Still better than any other mainstream band by a landslide) I'm With You for the most part sounds like throwaway songs from Stadium Arcadium. I know John won't be back because he's too creatively weird to box himself in for too long. For the record though, there were 5 years in between OHM and Californication too. That didn't seem to affect the numbers.

I think this album that they're working will be josh at his best, i said that, by the recent live shows... he is much more confortable, and found his place in the band, remids me a little the space between john's first album with the band and BSSM, of course, keeping in mind, that on that time, they were a young band, still grouwing, nowdays they're on the rock and roll hall of fame, so its much more difficult to still making sucess...

I think he's opened up massively 5 or 6 years on from this video.
He is so quiet on the guitar compared to John... even thou they both seem to be pretty introverted as a person, john totally freaks out on his solos and makes his mind and his feelings to sound.
Not to say that Josh wasn't good, but sometimes i really think that he fears someone could hear him.
+BlackXbonE I think they lowered the volume of his guitar because he's fresh meat which is fucking stupid if you ask me. Josh is incredible, I listened to all his work with Frusciante, with Dot Hacker and it's mind blowing, especially the work he's done with Ataxia. He can really bring a new sound scape and new stuff to the peppers if they just let him... That's just for them to decide..

i saw them in oakland earlier this month and the guy kicked ass. such a good show.
Honestly, the thing is they're both amazing guitarists. But John's playing and singing complemented every single piece of the band all the time. The way his voice mingled perfectly with Anthony's and his guitar fit solid and funky with the bass was the ultimate expression of the Red Hot Chili Peppers sound.
People need to stop saying Josh needs to stop imitating John. He has NEVER tried to be John! Josh has always injected his own style which I think is perfect just the same. The RHCP era with John is over. People have got to move on! C'mon, Josh is awesome! He is perfect for what the RHCP has evolved to be now.

This is an epic way of saying, "John is impossible to match or replicate, my friend!" Lol
Yes it's still a long way to go for him but kudos to his bravery and determination to be an RHCP lead. On my own point of view, there are two reasons why there's a lot of pressure on his shoulders. First, he knows that people will start to compare him to john until forever and second is that, he is now undeniably legal and official RHCP lead guitarist. Give him a break. RHCP will still be a great band no matter what.
Josh is fantastic. What he is doing with the Peppers is totally different and, if you open your mind, some of the best and most varied music they have ever made. While it isn't their best record, it's high quality music. I think that Josh just has to find his confidence, and make his voice heard more. That will come with touring and playing more shows. It's no different than when John joined the band. I'm With You is like his Mother's Milk. Hopefully their next record will be his BSSM! :)

Josh's a good guitarist, but when the solo make it almost impossible for me to know even what song they're playing, idk, it takes away from it, don't get me wrong I like a unique solo, but when the solo has so much effects and is so personalized, I think it losses a bit of the nostalgia.

I think the new band has more concerts that sound really good than the glory days but nothing compares to Slane Castle!!!!!!

What gretsch model is that in californication?
I'm starting to come around to Josh but to me there seems to be a fundamental flaw. The essence of RHCP is their funky soul style of music. Everything comes from a vibrant deep yet funky idea. Josh seems to have the soul but more of an emotional or dark one that I can hear come out in his music. Anthony has has plenty of songs that portray the dark side of and the bands life but the music plays out triumphant and inspiring. Josh's tone leaves me more with a "pondering on my feelings" vibe then the "I've been through tough times but life is great" vibe if that makes any sense. I think it's mixing okay but I hope those two styles mesh some more in the future because I'll listen to RHCP as long as I'm on this earth :)

I think Josh just plays too much. If the solo is predetermined then it usually come out a little bit better, but look at John's solo on "Dosed". He plays all of 3 notes for the longest time and it really serves the song beautifully. Josh is getting better and some solo's are better than others, but it is just my feeling that he overplays often or tries to hide behind effects.

I don't know what it is about Josh's solos, but somehow they just don't feel coherent. Almost like he's playing one song and the band is playing another.
Because his playing is weak and not very advanced.
I don't think he is a bad guitar player by any means, but jesus when he goes into a solo half the time his tone just goes to shit.
