  • This video follows MRL's regular daily manifest train which traverses the railroad between Laurel and Missoula MT; The M-LAUMIS (and M-MISLAU). One of the only true MRL trains that runs along the line. I caught it at a few notable locations like Winston Hill and up Mullan Pass. It had helpers attach to the rear for the pull up Mullan which really added a nice extra element.

    I had a feeling of daja vu watching that train round the bend heading for Mullan Pass.

    Mullan pass also known as "north pass" was originally discovered by Lewis and Clark and the Corp of Discovery. At the time they referred to it as the most sensible pass over the Continental Divide. They could not have been more wrong! The Mullan Road, named after John Mullan was a well-traveled wagon road from the Missouri River to Walla Walla.

    Thanks for sharing, Dan. I last made a trip to Skyline in 2014. I stayed most of a nice summer day watching MRL working over the pass. One thing that surprised me was how badly worn the inside rail head was on the curve. It was down to about 3/4" thick at most and there was next to nothing left of the inside rail head - it was worn nearly flush with the the web of the rail. BTW - I don't recommend driving over the pass past the trestle, unless your vehicle has at least 10" of ground clearance. The road has some very deep rain ruts, at least the times I've been there.

    The SD70ACes looks great in MRL's colors. The helper engines are pretty filthy, I assume they are working 24/7. Big Sky Country is a truly gorgeous state. Trees everywhere, nice blue rivers and cool hills. We can enjoy all these things in your video. Excellent update again Dan. I'm a fan of the MRL, so I really love these videos. Please keep them coming. 😊

    To answer about the 5 unit helper set that is very common for mrl going over mullan pass this one of my favorite rail roads to see the mrl will be missed

    Thank you for documenting Montana Rail Link's train M-LAUMIS on 22 May 2022, Dan! Seeing this train going over Winston Hill and through Mullan Pass and Tunnel was a wonderful sight to see. Do you know if that five-unit helper set, that helped the train over Mullan Pass, the usual helper set? Does the number of helper units in the set depend on the weight of the train that they are helping over Mullan Pass? As usual, this was an entertaining video. You did catch me off guard by posting a video on a Friday.

    • @TheRailfanDan
      @TheRailfanDan  Před rokem

      Thanks Thomas. Yes a 4 o 5 unit helper set is standard and even in this case where they only had one online pushing they decided to keep the pack together rather than split it apart to use the single motor.

    Thank you for the beautiful footage - very inspirational. I'm modeling MRL 2nd and 3rd sub on my model RR layout (Logan to Garrison), portions of which you've shown in your video. Wish you started a bit more eastward though with Logan, Lombard Canyon and also covered Helena and west to Garrison. Maybe another time...😄

    I loved the Skyline - Mullin Pass - Austin Creek - Mullin Tunnel, stretch.
    I imagine that you have to watch your signal strength, up around the bends flying through there.
    Thank you, again.
    I enjoyed the ride, All The Way!

    • @TheRailfanDan
      @TheRailfanDan  Před rokem +1

      Thank you Ron! Yes at Skyline I had to be careful not to drift too far to the right before the trestle as I was chasing the helpers and loose signal around the hill. I really enjoyed flying that section and didn't know I would be able to get the tunnel in view until it happened so that was a pretty cool surprise.
