    Once you accept the idea that a large number of Best Picture winners weren’t even the best picture of their respective years, then you understand how subjective rankings can be. I disagree with a lot of the specific placements in this list, but so what? There are a lot of films here that I love, admire, and view repeatedly for a variety of different reasons; there are also some that I positively can’t stand. Again, so what? This ranking is as valid as any other. It is also extremely well done with an excellent selection of representative shots and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it.

Yes, it was old and "veddy British," but there was no denying the sweep of early 20th-century history that it depicted. Highly affecting: the mother Jane, just having learned of the death of her son Joe, wanders the streets full of revelers celebrating the end of WW1. She raises her noisemaker with the rest of them, but only for a moment before her grief crowds in on her again. I've never forgotten the heartbreak of that scene. I appreciate the compliment on the making of the video.
      I have to disagree that 'everyone' believes Shakespeare in Love shouldn't have won Best Picture. The crowded Oscars party I was at here in North Carolina erupted in cheers when the win was announced. My co-workers were generally enthusiastic about it as well. Not to mention that large number of professional artists and craftspeople who actively voted for it. The movie not only took home Best Picture, but also wins in 6 other categories. It wasn't until I got home from work the next day and logged into the internet that I encountered a bunch of bellyaching.
      Nevertheless, Shakespeare in Love continues to be one of a couple handfuls of Best Picture winners that I sit down and enjoy on roughly a yearly basis. On the other hand, while I have no problem with the wins it did take home, Saving Private Ryan pretty much gathers dust on my shelf.
      Anyway, I generally think everyone should enjoy whatever movies make them happy. That's what popular art is about.

I give you credit for having the conviction to rank them, giving us a glimpse of so many the average fan has never seen, and a beautiful presentation.

    • @cardboardbelt
      @cardboardbelt  Před rokem

      Here's the thing about cinema. It smashes together so many different crafts/art forms/tech that the result is going to naturally be very subjective in overall quality.
      Sometimes a film has such amazing cinematography or such great design elements or such a great set of performances that it overwhelms any of its small shortcomings. At the same time, a movie can be strong throughout without ever being genius in any way. All this is to say that making a list like this is unavoidably going to be based on the individual's experience of the films in question.
      I will tell you that one of the things I keep in mind is rewatch value. While I have seen lots of people say that they never want to watch Schindler's List or Spotlight again, I have found great value in seeing each of them several times. I am engrossed in them each time. Other movies on this list I have tried to watch multiple times only to find that my first negative impulse was pretty spot on (for me). Tom Jones will likely never get a third watch attempt from me.

    The winners are awarded as a result of various circumstances of the period in question, and not by their artistic merits on most of cases. In the 20s and 30s it was the big espectacle, in the 40s the war theme, in the 50s social-realism, in the 60s the big superproductions, in the 70s there was a return to social melodrama, and in the 80s Hollywood was becoming too politically correct, and it got worse up to this day. Many of the films of the last forty years are easily forgettable, and we wonder how they got the prize in the first place: Diving Miss Daisy, Out of Africa, Ghandi, Slumdog Millionaire, Twelve Years a Slave, to name a few. The Academy has always been too soppy and too sugary.

Just as 'best films' today in the last 22 years will be seen 'differently' in the latter part of this century.Very difficult to do. Too many historical/cultural/'mindset' variables to take into account. I remember movies from the 50s but really only began to 'critically' view them starting in the mid/late 60s. I'm sure that someone born at turn of this century and then compare take all of them into account from, say, early 80s and have us three 'rank' them would come into different conclusions as to what which were awful and which awesome.

    1. LOTR: The Return of the King
    2. Gladiator
    3. Schindler's List
    4. The Silence of the Lambs
    5. Rocky

    Shakespeare in Love #7?? That movie shouldn't even be on this list but since it is, it deserves last place. The best movie doesn't always win.

    By the way, for the first year of the Academy Awards, the award category for which "Wings" won in 1927 was called "Outstanding Picture" (becoming "Outstanding Production" two years later until the 14th awards when it would be called "Outstanding Motion Picture" and that until the 17th when it would become "Best Motion Picture"). Another award that evening of the 1st awards was "Best Unique and Artistic Picture" (for the only time) for which the winner was "Sunrise." For this reason, some say that "Sunrise" was actually a second Best Picture winner that year, since it can be argued that both categories combined to eventually become the Best Picture category.

    A refreshing list for sure! I also have The Departed lower on my list, as I know for a fact there are several Best Picture Winners I enjoyed more.
    The Apartment is one of the best films I have ever seen, and seeing it your number 1 is refreshing!
    It’s all about taste and experience at the end of the day. Not everyone is going to see said film the same way, and that’s what makes it interesting.
    Great ranking! 👍

      I always enjoy seeing lists like this when they break a little from the 'agreed upon' favorites, even if I disagree. For sure we should know what that standard homogenized list looks like, because then we get the pleasure of moving away from it.

      I believe there may be a couple of more non winning Scorsese movies better than The Departed. Can you guess which ones?

    • @cardboardbelt
      @cardboardbelt  Před rokem +1

      My personal favorite Scorsese film is 1982's The King of Comedy. The ones that appear to have been runners up on the nights of their respective Oscars ceremony were 1980's Raging Bull, 1976's Taxi Driver, and 1990's Goodfellas. To my mind, it's too bad that one of those didn't grab him his first big Academy win instead of The Departed.

      It’s more important and technically advanced than those films, but I really only truly admire the 40 minutes or so that involve the chariot race. I can’t imagine wanting to watch the whole thing a third time.

    Great list! We have a lot in common. I could try and come off as a cinema connoisseur, but that would be lying. I appreciate your honesty (just disregard comments that get personal opinion mixed up with what gets you brownie points). Contrary to popular opinion, I found Out Of Africa, Gandhi and The English Patient unbearably boring and Forrest Gump completely overrated, since it's ridiculously far fetched and a cliche fest. I think The Deer Hunter is too low in your rating, I love that movie even though the pacing is very uneven. #1 is an excellent choice! Some of the lesser known Oscar winners I haven't watched yet, so I can't comment on these. Many of my all time favorites didn't win the Award anyway.

      @cardboardbelt  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much for your kind words and for dropping by to watch. There’s a lot to like about the Deer Hunter, but I found myself wishing it had stayed focused on their home town prior to and after being at war. Some of the elements broke my suspension of disbelief.
      But that’s why art is great. We all get to experience it through our own lens.

      @@cardboardbelt Yeah, The Deer Hunter. The Russian roulette scenes (and others) relied way too much on coincidence, even though I get the basic idea. These are Smith&Wesson revolvers, where the cylinder runs counterclockwise (as opposed to the Colt revolvers). So I conclude that it's all rather a metaphor, comparing rituals, but a metaphor for what? Film "experts" continue discussing this to this day. The sequence where the Rober DeNiro character returns to VietNam is rushed. At least two cuts are extremely abrupt (the first reunion scene in VietNam cuts abruptly to a hut by a river, when the DeNiro character runs after Chris Walken's and misses him, it cuts back abruptly to Pennsylvania).

    Wonderfully constructed montage of Best Picture winners. I appreciated that "How Green Was My Valley", the picture that beat out "Citizen Kane" for Best Picture, was ranked fairly low, and I appreciate the uniqueness of your choices in the rankings. You showed a love for some underrated films, which I liked very much. Good job!

    • @cardboardbelt

      I agree that the context of the era should be taken into account. At the same time, I have no choice but to respond to what is actually in front of me, especially when there are other great films from the same year that are both really well made and have remained engaging to this day.
      1931: Chaplin's City Lights is better than Cimarron in the key elements of script, editing, and performance. Hugely so.
      1963: 8 1/2 is considered an all-time great that hasn't aged poorly to the degree that Tom Jones has.
      1952: Both High Noon and Singin' in the Rain are hallmarks of their genres that continue to delight new audiences, while the Greatest Show on Earth has flaws that are just impossible to ignore.
      I have found things to admire about even the lowest ranked movies here, but it would be dishonest if I were to pretend to like any of them better than I do. After all, I'm never going to find myself in a position where I'm recommending movies to people who currently live in 1931.
