  • Klaipeda University Botanical Garden - Autumn colors
Klaipeda University Botanical Garden - a botanical garden belonging to Klaipeda University. Founded in 1993. The Botanical Garden is located 3-14 m above sea level, in the northern part of Klaipeda, on the right bank of the Dane River Valley. The total area of the garden area is 9.3 ha. The flow of the Dane River, which flows through the territory of the Botanical Garden, is very winding. The Botanical Garden is located in an area with exceptional climatic conditions: higher air temperature, higher rainfall, longer vegetation period compared to other parts of Lithuania.
After the establishment of Klaipėda University (1991) and the formation of study programs in biology, ecology and recreation, it became necessary to create a study and research base for students and lecturers of these, as well as other specialties. For this reason, the Botanical Garden of Klaipeda University was established in 1993. The initiator and first director of the garden was prof. A. M. Olšauskas.
After the establishment of the Botanical Garden of Klaipeda University, seedlings and green cuttings of coniferous trees and shrubs were donated by the Botanical Gardens of Kaunas Vytautas Magnus and Vilnius University, individual plant collectors. KU Botanical Garden cooperates with Lithuanian and world botanical gardens and arboretums (~ 100), exchanges seeds and green cuttings, accumulates a fund of cultivated plant seeds. For this reason, plant collections are constantly being supplemented with new plants.
Ornamental and other economically valuable plants are collected and exhibited in three collections: dendrological, medicinal and spice plants and herbaceous ornamental plants (perennial and annual flowers). There is a collection of climbing plants, a rock garden and a rosarium. A nursery was established for the propagation of trees, shrubs and flowers, an ethnographic flower nursery was set up, the main observation deck was renovated, and a suspension bridge was built.
The Botanical Garden exhibits ~ 3,000 taxon plants (2011). The composition of the introduced vegetation is given integrity and maturity by natural vegetation - more than 200 plant species grow naturally in the territory. Most of them are herbaceous plants, and the species diversity of woody plants is dominated by maple (Acer platanoides), black alder (Alnus glutinosa), white alder (Alnus incana), common and late ivy (Prunus padus, Padus serotina), European goose (Eusonymus) .
In order to show visitors the traditional ethnographic kindergartens of the seaside region, the KU Botanical Garden has set up an ethnographic kindergarten of the seaside region, with flower arrangements typical of this region.
According to the data of 2012, representatives of 14 family plants are exhibited in the ethnographic kindergarten of KU Botanical Garden, and most of them are representatives of the Asteraceae family. One of the most important factors in determining the diversity of plants grown in nurseries was the characteristics of the plants. In most cases, not only beautiful, but also otherwise useful plants that can be treated are suitable for seasoning food or used in the home - for dyeing fabrics, washing, and killing insects.
Green rust (Ruta graveolens), perennial herbs: Bellis perennis, Mentha spicata, Hyssopus officinalis, Tanacetum parthenid, , medicinal foam (Saponaria officinalis), medicinal peony (Paeonia officinalis), artichoke (Artemisia abrotanum). The ethnographic nursery is decorated with Rudbeckia laciniata and Viola tricolor. Annual ethnographic flowers are exhibited in the ethnographic nursery of the KU Botanical Garden: Tropaeolum majus, Lathyrus odoratus, Impatiens balsamina. In the group of biennial ethnographic flowers, Althaea rosea stands out for its ornamentation and variety of flowers, while in the group of perennial flowers, Phlox paniculata and Dahlia pinnata stand out.
