Ironically, very funny that one of the talking points in the video was how toxic the debate is and how both sides are incapable of giving the other credit…
Then this comment section is filled with “Chet’s a role player on a good team, carried by SGA” vs. “Wemby’s an inefficient loser!”

Yeah, it's neither of those extremes.
Chet definitely is *more* of a role player than Wemby -- not just because of the situation either -- but in the way Bill Russell was a role player. (Which is to say he's not actually a role player.) Chet just does the right thing every time. He defends, he's a good passer, he can shoot, he doesn't force shots. He's just a really really good basketball player and the ideal #2 next to any superstar guard.
He strikes me as the kind of guy who's true value is only unlocked playing with other great players. He's a ceiling raiser more than a floor raiser.
Wemby is more like Wilt. But if Wilt had carried more about winning instead of personal glory. Or like LeBron. Or Giannis. His physical gifts are so preposterous that he's inevitable. It's just a matter of how he and his coaches want to use them. He could be Wilt, Hakeem, David Robinson, Garnett, Dirk or all of them combined.

Not enough people talk about how Wemby, despite being a rookie, seems to have an extremely high basketball IQ at this level. He's arguably a top 5 defender already but its not just height/wingspan that got him there. He constantly makes the correct defensive read and has great timing that actually gives so much value to him as a rim protector rather than just jumping and hoping he gets a hand on the ball. Lots of people talk about his future offensive ceiling but I think his defensive ceiling is more interesting, since he's only going to get smarter and stronger.

Top 5 defender ? Wtf is you yapping about? Don’t get me wrong Wemby is the clear ROY, but Chet literally plays better than him defensively. Wemby’s perimeter D is meh, I feel like he only wants to defend when he knows he can block it. Averaging 3 blocks is easy when you’re a feet taller than the average nba player, and blocks don’t make someone a great defender automatically. He needs to learn how to follow his guy more. Wemby has one key attribute that all great players have. He steps up when challenged by superstars. Everything about Wemby and his game screams future superstar. The eye test just doesn't give me the same vibe on Chet. He's good, but won't be a superstar. For me, it's an easy choice, Wemby is simply a better player. And Chet won't miraculously save the Spurs and I doubt he'd have the same numbers with limited minutes and being the primary focus of opposing defenses. In OKC, teams can't afford to double Chet or help off of the perimeter. He has a legitimate MVP frontrunner leading his team and excellent teammates. In San Antonio, Wemby is on an island. The next best offensive player is Devin Vassel who isn't even close to all-star level. No one on the Spurs can pass aside from Tre Jones who can only pass and can't shoot. Sochan was their primary ball handler for most of the season and he is a power forward who has poor court vision. Getting the ball to Wemby has proven to be a tough task for the Spurs. Despite all that, Wemby made it work on the few chances he got. But it's tough because every time he gets the ball in the post, he is doubled or triple teamed. I doubt Chet would be able to do the same.

    • @bigraccoon2110
      @bigraccoon2110 Před 4 měsíci +11

I disagree. Wemby is the clear ROY, but their style is different. Chet is the perfect 2nd player on a team and he adapted to that role perfectly in half a season. It’s no wonder why okc is way better than last year. Wemby is better, but in the okc system, having already a lot of great shooters and ball handlers, he would be too much. His efficiency is mid while shooting A LOT, and can’t carry his team to 10 wins in 50 games. Chet shoots when he knows he can get the bucket and plays kinda smarter overall, he doesn’t need the ball to have the impact of an all star. He doesn’t shoot for no reason. Chet with spurs would be worse than wemby with spurs, but wemby with okc would be worse than Chet with okc. All depends onto the surrounding team and players.

Wembanyama is doing more in less time with a harder role to fulfill. There is no debate, he IS better than Chet, has BEEN better than Chet before entering the league, and will BE better than Chet for their entire careers.
Realistically, Chet might just end up being a role player his whole career. He doesn't have the competitive spirit to want to grow as a player, as demonstrated by his stats going down and efficiency also dropping since the start of the season, even though he was placed into a role that perfectly optimizes his chances to succeed and thrive on the court.
Wembanyama came into the league with expectations to be the best player on his team, and the best rookie of the recent years. Yet he has not once disappointed in terms of living up to those expectations, and continues to grow and thrive in difficult matchups even with a minutes restriction.

I would bet the farm on this won't age well... as they will have vastly different careers and outcomes. This is like comparing a high school track star to Usain Bolt, and saying they both have merit because the race has just begun. Wemby is doing things that will refine greatness in this league and we are seeing small glimpses of it, Chet is good, and is everything his team asked and coached him to be and more, starting a year ago (cough cough not a rookie)
Wemby is rookie of the year by ALONG LONG way. And Chet, barring something horrible, (knock on wood), will be a team leader and assets to any team he on, as either a #1 or #2 option most of his career. Stat wise Victor is well ahead and pulling father ahead every week. And how the best players in the league are reacting and treating Wemby says more than enough.
I mentioned it early, but the easiest way to clear this up is, if you are leaning toward Chet at ROTY, put Wemby in his place. Wemby is on track for one of the highest stocks totals in the last 20 years. Not just by a rookie - by any player.

This was a great unbiased video. One thing I would mention about Wemby being the guy and ask to do more. That has recently started to happen. The 1st 24 games of the year was weird.
Seemed like players did not like the Wemby hype, were not throwing him the ball. Pop was trying to avoid Wemby being the guy. Did not run plays for him or did he even make adjustments to get him involved. His teammates either just did not attempt to throw him the ball or could not get him accurate entry pass.
You have seen all the Change in the last 10 games or so ago. Don’t forget his minute restriction. Chet usage rate was higher than Wemby. But in-spite of all this Wemby was still out performing Chet and it was not because Wemby was being asked to be the guy, taking more shots, being the focus point of the offense. He just maximized his chances and often times had to force it. Hence his splits the first 24 games vs the last 15 games.
All in all. My unbiased opinion on Chet is he is playing really well better than most rookies in his position. Wemby is just on another level right now if he just stays consistent through February. He would have put up number we have not seen since Shaq rookie year

This video encapsulates how Chet thrives as the third or fourth option in his team because he has SGA, JDub, and Giddey playing beside him. He gets more open looks because those other three player takes away the defensive focus from him. Also, it helps that he has a MVP-caliber PG in Shai, and also an All-Star in-the-making with JDub who can find him in the right spots and set plays for him. Meanwhile, Wemby is playing without a PG or in this case, he’s the PG and he has to create most of his shots. All his shots are contested. No easy looks because the defensive focus is all on him as the first option. Opponents gameplan with him in mind, and all throughout the season, he’s always been double or triple-teamed everytime he touches the ball. Another thing about him is that the Spurs are also keeping him on a leash with that minute restriction that started since December. PER doesn’t actually measure efficiency, it’s just a formulated combination of every box score stat. Chet’s got a higher FG%, 2P%, 3P%, and TS% with half as many turnovers.
That’s not saying Chet’s a better player, just that he has been more efficient by pretty much every measure of accuracy.

Right now I give the slight not to Wemby bc of the slightly better stats, but it's still early in the season. If Chet can finish the season at 20 ppg, 8-9 rpg, 2-3 apg, 2-3 bpg, 1-2 spg- I might vote for him, bc he has a more limited role on a better team. If they switched teams, their numbers would more or less switch as well.

You can say the same about wemby if he average 23-11-3, 3.5 blocks, 1-2 spg😂. You can’t boost chet stats without think wemby stats can increase because wemby been on a great stretch only time he dropped less than 20 points in 2024, he had a triple double

Im a Spurs fan, so I may be a little biased. The past dozen games Pop has been running Tre Jones at PG and the Spurs have had much better results with that switch, and ever since that change Wemby has been averaging 26ppg on 27min and actually winning some games. This game Tre Jones was out on a sprained ankle, so our offense was a total wreck. On top of that we were completely outscored at the 3pt, having made like 2/12 or something in the first half. Put Tre Jones in that game, and if a few more of those threes go in, we couldve actually seen a close game maybe even a win.

Wemby is clearly ahead in terms of head to head stats and effectiveness on the court (come on, triple team as a rookie?). Chet is also a monster but I want this ROTY discussion to be over and want to watch these 2 monsters in the years to come when they have equally good team and see the playoff masterclass these 2 can have.

This comment section is filled with good takes, I love it. But both sides can present equally valuable arguments, so *at this point of the season* I say just give two ROTY awards. So far both players deserve it, just from different perspectives. I do however feel like Wemby developes his game faster then Chet, and kinda root for Victor to win the award, since I've seen him a few times in Euroleague and this boy is hella good.
