- Cmdr. John Koenig has been replaced/taken over and the crew try to figure out what is going on. Maya, the resident shape-shifting alien, changes into another member of the crew to gain access to a mysterious crystal.
This was the mid-late 70's and budgetary restrictions as well as the lack of technology means there is no attempt to show the transformation.
However, most of the time Maya transformed into huge (rubber suited) space monsters so it makes a nice change to have her become another female. - Zábava
I always loved the sound effect when Maya transformed; it was my favourite part of the show.
This was my fave programme as a kid...
This clip brings back so many fond memories. Space 1999 was definitely ahead of the other shlocky shows of its time. Maya's character was all class and imagination. And the blonde in this clip is HOT! :)
I used to watch this for the Maya transformations; I just loved that SFX!
Given the lack of technology at the time, never mind the lack of budget season 2 had, it conveys Maya's shapeshifting ability reasonably well.
Haven't seen Space 1999 since it was on in the 70s. I had a crush on Maya at school and swapped a classmate a silly amount of things to get an A4 size picture of her from Look-In magazine that I put on the back of my bedroom door. A friend visiting one evening put a sticker on the middle of her face that I couldn't get off, which caused a fight and we fell out. Seeing this clip brings it all back. Time has healed the bitterness...
I remember an episode when Maya "imagined"
herself SMALLER than her real size (to
get out of a space she was stuck in.)
I wish I could see that again!
Maybe today shows have better special effects, but we have more imagination and fun with this old shows.
bloody hell...I was so in love with Maya...i must have been 6 or 7!
Series 1 had the better stories but I loved Maya in series 2!
That is so cool! But it's so sad that Tony Verdeshi (Tony Anholt) has already passed away! He died of a brain tumor on July 26, 2002 in London England UK!
Bring back Space 1999!!! If Star Trek could do it then Space 1999 can too. Or do a remake of it for a whole new generation,....but keep the shape shifting character of MYA. She was what made the show great during Season 2.
In Fred Freiberger's original written concept, Maya was to have been played by a black actress.
Catherine Schell is so stunningly beautiful that I could easily overlook the alien eyebrows and sideburns.
I liked the character of Maya.
Imagine an entire NEW series of Space:1999! That would be wicked!
@gamewizard That makes sense. Fortunate that Maya had a clipboard handy to carry into the laboratory or the guard might have been suspicious ;-)
The intro tells us the moon broke out of its orbit on September 13th, 1999.
Both ladies look great, and I really like the orange flight suit for the extra.
I loved Maya as a kid. Rewatching, I still like the character but I also miss VICTOR. Did he ever come back?
The one thing I can recall is that the title of that episode came from someone (either the writer or the producer) driving along a road in England and seeing a sign for a town called Luton!
I remember this show. I don't remember it
well because I was only 3 when I watched it but what I remember is that even though I was really young I had a crush on the blond woman. The shape shifting woman scared me.
I liked the episodes with maya
a great show
She was great. Martin Landau always thought the Trek premise was unrealistic. Irony is , that he and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) co-starred on Mission Impossible.
@kaferere I adore Maya, and at the same time I know exactly what you mean. You can sum it up by saying "If she could fly an eagle, we can get rid of the rest" She was for me the epitome of the "magic alien" (re Spock) who could solve any problem they encountered because [MAKE UP STUFF HERE] No matter whether it was alien hi tech, monster, strange environment, your alien can solve it. In both shows they were not so much the alien as THE alien. On the other hand, as one fan said: ...GOOD MOVE!
I always loved this show, but the laser guns always seemed to remind me of staple guns.
I'd love it too, but what would we call it? 2099 maybe? 1999 is now the past.
maya was the only thing i remember about this. i was born in 1972. she may have been in the run for my first crush, alomg with princess from g force.
What episode is this please?
@kaferere Obviously, she was mainly conceived as this shows answer to Mr. Spock ( as Star Treck was the other popular sci-fi show with which this was competing ).
That "New Guy" was Fred Frieberger, the man responsible for the third season of Star Trek TOS.
@jennyinthepark
In the original script for the season 2 opening episode ("Metamorph") it was reported that Professor Victor Bergman had died from a faulty spacesuit.
Wow! Maya changed into a gorgeous blond, shame she didn't stay that way...
Yes, that's one (little) detail that always annoys me. Would be that much better if they had to copy/acquire the clothing some other way.
Maya could only hold another form for one hour. Of course, there are plenty of things that can be done in under an hour...
This is the first time I have seen this since I was a kid and my dad made me sit through an episode of the first season. Still pretty cool but slightly dry. I guess thats how British tv is. I don't mind it though because I love British humor, like Coupling especially (way funnier than Friends by the way.) Catherine Schell is hot!! I actually met her in France while in the Army. She is so cool and I got a few pictures with her as well to boot.
You were one lucky sod!
Without all the sideburns and warty eyebrows, Catherine Schell is very beautiful.
But, Barbara Bain who played Dr. Helena Russell had in her contract that if they added a female star with a large script.. she had to have alien makeup! True!
Pretty vain and petty, huh?
I thought it was a staple gun... With with a kill setting...
before there was a mystique, there was maya.
@kaferere Oh, but of course she was much easier on the eyes than Spock, I must add.
I wanted to be her so bad when I was a little young boy.
I completely forgot that Maya could transform into dopplegangers of other people.
If only she could have transformed her eyebrows into normal ones...
i love to have that power...
It seems ironic to me that all the comments on this thread are about Catherine Schell--and I agree, she was stunningly beautiful and might still be--when most of the scene was carried by another (also quite lovely) actress who played the woman whom Maya was doppleganging--and the part of the real Cranston as well. Anybody know what HER name is?
Funny how shape shifters always change outfits too. Must save on clothing costs. LOL
Maya was a great character but the stories from season 1 were a lot better.
I don't know. Something about chicks with sideburns makes me all hot!
Now now folks, let's not get to het up ;-)
I'm obviously happy to suspend my disbelief.
But, compare a shapeshifter like Maya to Mystique from X-Men - are Maya's clothes part of her? If not how do shapeshifters in so many movies manage to duplicate the clothes as well as the body?
I think about stuff like that too much lol.
Disguizer
Martha Nairn
@disguizer Well, I think you can blame tv censorship standards for THAT.
Nice cellphone
I liked Maya but that over-abundance of makeup on her cheeks sure was distracting.
