John Barry was a huge compositional talent able to switch from one style/genre of TV & film to another, whilst still holding onto his identity- ‘his sound’ in the soundtracks he created. 🎼🎵🎶🎵💛😊

The "black hole" theme Barry developed is interesting. It sounds like the orchestra is trying to develop a motiv, but its weighed down by gravity, so its short, sharp and it keeps trying to restart but it keeps getting pulled down. Everything is pulled down to the center, and the notes are dissonant as it cant hit the key specified. lots of accidentals. interesting.

Fantastic!!! I was 8 1/2 when this came. I was standing in line with my father. Star Trek was also playing. The critics failed to understand how powerful it was. The scenic desighn alone. The doorways, passageways all unique i dont know of a single sci fi film that has ever repeted the look. My thinking is alien probably took most people away from this film because it was unique, mixing horror with scifi. The black hole was a wonderful part of my childhood and always will be😂

Is the "blaster beam" that xylophone-sounding instrument? Because if so, I can see why people are talking about Star Trek, as I do remember hearing this sound somewhere in Trek.
Edit: actually, I think it's this rumbling metal tube sound. For what it's worth, they're both percussive sounds, so they could be one and the same. Wonder why the hell they called it the "blaster beam", though, other than it being so unorthodox it's memorable.

John Barry reached a stage where all his music sounded practically the same. This, Moonraker and even Out of Africa had the same droning sound. Far inferior to his earlier works.
