- Forge Welding and Making a Stainless San Mai knife. Going through the steps of preparing and forging two layers of stainless steel to a layer of 1095 steel for the core of a San Mai (Three Layer) knife billet. After the billet is made I will proceed to make a harpoon style hunting knife and discuss the techniques for preventing splitting problems associated with san mai knives that sometimes occur after quenching the the knife to harden it.

Where do you buy your 410 stainless from? Every supplier I have looked at had too thick stainless, or it cost too much.
These were 1/4 inch thick. They are high but I will have to find out where I bought it last. I’ve had several pieces for about 5 years. I will have to get some soon though, I’m low. I’ll look around and let you know.
Just looked on Jantz supply. They have it. You can use 1/8 and then use a 1/8 core of 1095. It will still be plenty of steel.
@@TonySeverioKnives Thanks!
You’re welcome 😁
Applying clay is a great tip that none of the other stainless san-mai bladesmiths mention.
It will prevent splitting for sure. Thanks. 😊
Wouldn't have thought about clay until it was too late . . . hello Stainless W2 jacketed knife of my future!!!
It works! An old bladesmith taught me this trick. 😁
Lol! You got me with that heat treat split!
Ha awesome! 😁😁😁
Very good information to share. Stayed away from San mai because of most people experiencing the split. Now armed with your advice, thinking I need to order some stainless. Thanks Tony for another great video
You’re welcome my friend. Thanks for watching! 😁
I have encountered a bad experience with stainless san Mai. Now I know why. Thank you so much,😄
Awesome man, I’m glad this helps! Thanks for watching! 😁
Have a good weekend!
You too my friend. 😁
Thanks for the video Mr. Severio!
You’re welcome my friend, thank you for watching!
Great video friend. Your technical experience is very valuable to up and coming folks new to the craft. Thank you for sharing
Thank you sir. I hope to help someone along the way. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for the absolutely awesome video 👍 that's going to be a beautiful blade when it's finished. Im trying to work on a knife today myself since I didn't make it to blade show
Thank you sir! I hope so. It’s got to be good or else! Have fun! 😁
Great work dude.😀😀
Thank you!
Very nice 👍
Thank you for the knowledge 🙏
Thank you! And thanks for watching! 😁
Always nice content
Thanks buddy!
I love san mai, but it's a real pain to make without a press, so I normally don't make it.
Yes it is but I’ve made a bunch of it with a hammer. Not stainless though. The stainless is tricky. Have to make sure it’s sealed up air tight to forge weld.
tony great video my friend you always have great info appreciate it this weekend im doing a knife making class with matt parkinson at dragons breath forge hope to learn something we will be forging chef knives. thanks again !! Mark
Thank you my friend! That sounds like fun man! Let me know how it goes.
@@TonySeverioKnives i will for sure buddy
Great!
Wouldn't the refractory cement make a hamon on blade?
Too thick down the side but not so much on the low carb stainless. If it’s on the carbon core running up it would
Is the process exactly the same for say a stainless core wrapped in tool steel or even damascus?
I would anytime that stainless is in the mix.
Thanks for the video ! 🙂 Did you quench it in oil and at what temperature was it (quenchant) ?
You’re welcome. Yes the cat re is 1095 steel so it’s quenched in Parks 50 oil at about 120 degrees. Thanks for watching 🙂
👍✌️⚒️
🙂🙂
What type of stainless did you use for your jacket material?
That was 410 stainless.
