Rob was trained in opera in college and has not sung it in 15 years! Austin trained in musical theater with some opera too. His professors wanted him to continue with opera but musical theater was where his heart was. Austin talked Rob into doing this video to showcase Rob’s “ hidden” talent! They were super nervous about releasing it! What a fantastic surprise!

@@beadwright But there has always been a special friendship between Rob and Austin, from when they first met. Austin has said that when he heard Home Free on board ship, Rob's voice was the one that struck him most, and it was Rob who privately told Austin that there might well be a vacancy coming up for a high tenor. They have great admiration and love for each other.

Yup, Rob surprised me with this one, too! Another reactor explained this video in this way: "Rob sounds like an opera singer. Austin sounds like Austin singing opera." Rob's always been my favorite member of Home Free and this video just cemented that for me. I mean, I love Austin's voice, but he always sounds like Austin to me. With Rob, he's got these different modes to his voice: soft, angelic, delicate Rob; take you to church, soulful Rob; country Rob; rock, just-a-little-dirt-in-his-voice Rob; and now opera Rob. But I'll always love Home Free as a group more than the individual pieces
100% in agreement with every word you wrote. And all respect to Austin--but this was Rob's video.
Austin sounds really good for a 'classical crossover' genre. I mean, if he were actually on an opera stage, his voice would be utterly drowned out by the orchestra. He just doesn't have the projection and technique you need in order to do it without a mike. But he DOES sound good when properly miked!
HOWEVER.... Rob is actually a passable opera singer. He's no Pavarotti ... but you probably wouldn't feel cheated if you went to Turandot and you got him as a standby. He's got a rich and colorful tenor range, and due to his acapella career... he probably does better in the baritone range than most of the professional tenors out there. :)
@@Mr.Ekshin In fact Austin's voice has what in opera is called "spinto" - the incisive quality to enable a lyric tenor to cut through orchestration. Commenters with real training and experience in opera have remarked on how rare it is to find a lyric tenor of his power and tone.

Austin has the perfect voice for what he does, but he's no operatic tenor (spinto or otherwise). That's a whole different ball game.

Thanks for that explanation, Patricia. I should've realized Italian had a word for that property. Often when a group sings in unison, one voice cuts thru the others and it can be marvelous to listen to. But sometimes the 'spinto' voice isn't the best voice ... and that's not a plus. 🤣

Ashley, that was so *STUNNING* Rob definitely shined and he said it had been 15 years (since he studied opera in college) since he'd really sung any opera. Now you see just what kind of talent these boys really have !!! Makes me like them even more !!!!
Loved your shocked expression. Rob studied and sang opera about 15 years ago but not since. This was Austin's idea and allegedly took some encouragement on his part to get Rob on board. Most reactors have gone into this assuming it'd be classic Home Free shenanigans or perhaps lip syncing. Hopefully, given the overwhelmingly positive reponse they've received to this, it will motivate them to do some more. So much fun when they surprise us.

Rob was actually trained in Opera. And of course Austin's musical theater background. The got me in the Free for sure. Truly enjoyed watching your reaction to this song.

There is no question that every Home Free fan was left shocked, breathless and jaw dropped when they listened to this performance for the first time.
Furthermore, what Rob and Austin did was to introduce their legion of fans to opera. It was most likely their first time listening to opera.
I've been having a blast watching reactors lose their minds and being speechless from shock with this one! I thought your eyes were going to pop out of your head. Lol! Knowing that they are completely capable of turning songs into comedic events had most of us wondering exactly what was going to happen and come out of their mouths. We had a little taste with Austin singing Bring Him Home, but Rob shocked people so much that they thought it wasn't him at all. Great reaction as always!
Rob and Austin's extreme nervousness in the premiere live chat told those who watched the video then that this was serious business (no-one gets that jittery about a comic video).
Great Reaction! I have never been a fan of opera except maybe some Andrea Bocelli & a few others. But I have always appreciated the talent it takes to sing opera. I was pretty impressed with Rob & Austin's version of Nessun Dorma. I have heard this famous song done by Pavarotti. I think I was more surprised by Rob's range & powerful delivery than even Austin's. Pretty good for a couple of country boys! Nice to see them dressed up in suits & looking classy.

Check the off-mic performance of 'How Great Thou Art' in the storm in Kearney, mo. I heard about two weeks before this came out. It was totally obvious that Rob had the strongest voice of the five.

That’s so funny you mentioned “Ave Maria” because I would love to hear Rob sing that one really bad!! Of course, I love Austin, but Rob has that male angelic voice and I think that would be a perfect song for him! Ashley, I had just about the same reaction at the end the first time I watched this video. I had to re-watch it several more times. They did a phenomenal job with this song! Yes, shocked, goosebumped, jaw dropped, teary eyed is definitely the most common reaction to this, once it lifts you're left with love and joy.
The range of the singers in Home Free is amazing. Both Tim and Austin are song writers and wrote most of the songs on their latest album. It's hard to believe that Rob - who does a great imitation of Sir Mix-a-Lot also sings wonderful opera or that Austin (wrote and sings "Earn It") does do. Tim has a range of 5 octaves and Chance is pretty close to that. Of course, Adam Rupp has won world championships in beat boxing.
As a Rob Lundquist fan (and who isn't?) I think you might like a Home Free video called "Spaceship" - it has Rob, his wife and his utterly adorable children.

You have reacted as so many others have. The first time I heard it, I cried because it was so beautiful. Everyone has been tongue tied, amazed, couldn't make a complete sentence for quite a few minutes. So glad to see that other people appreciate what they did here. From what I understand, the guys were really worried about how this would be accepted but I think they nailed it totally.
We're having a lot of fun out here watching the shocked look on the reactors' faces. Knew this would blow up after seeing/hearing this the first time. Thanks for not disappointing.

Actually we need to remember that these are only "country" singers by accident! if you remember, Home Free called themselves a country band to stand out in the Sing Off. Rob is a city kid through and through, and both these guys have pretty sophisticated musical backgrounds. I think the title of the video was just to lower expectations in case people didn't like it. I wish people weren't surprised at who is singing but how well they sing! As you said, the contrast between the voices and how well they blend is awesome. I love these gorgeous guys.

I'm surprised you don't know the aria, which is the single most recognisable aria in all of history! Everyone in Europe knows it because of its performance at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Rome, and subsequent association with football.
Trivial fact: Austin's necktie is the one he wore in the video for "Crazy."

Alright people, we know that together and as individual artists these guys are great talents. So let's all take just a minute to shout out all the people that made this stop motion video to go with this fantastic song. Stop motion is one of the most time consuming methods for making videos and this one was very well done, so thanks to everyone that had a hand in this production!
Alot of people have stated that very statement about being blind and not knowing who was singing.
Your pronunciation is fine. I hear a lot of variations from reactors. The way some say Nessun Dorma is a case in point, I've heard Neesun, I've heard N'soon, but no, it's just as it looks, as it Lundquist. (Amd don't get me started on the variations on Geoff Castellucci I hear) LOL As for this song, I love it, and normally I don't. Others have explained so I won't repeat it.

Not bad is it !! In case you didn't know Ash, "Nessun Darma" which literally means "No one sleeps" (I speak Italian). It was the great Luciano Pavarotti's big song. It's from an opera by Puccini called Turandot (tour an dough) . Andrea Bocelli also brought it out and as someone who also listens to opera as well as Home Free, Pentatonix also sang in a rock band for over forty years (go figure) 😂 I can tell you in my opinion, Rob does it better than Bocelli and as good as Austin sounds, Rob knocks it out of the park. The power in Rob's voice was the thing that got me he is overpowering Austin and we have never seen that before usually the other way around who knew he could sing like that
Austin re-recorded his part to be more in line with Rob, who he was clearly allowing to set the pace (those little glances).
I was lucky enough to see the video of them off-mic in Kearney, mo during a storm. There are different phone recordings in various places around the picnic table they were standing on. You can hear who has the strongest voice. It was the way Rob sounded that shocked me. Been enjoying watching reactors ever since I saw Lyle react. Then the flood gates opened.

I have to give the point to Rob for sounding “more operatic” than Austin even though they both did very well. If I had heard it on the radio first, I MIGHT have recognized Austin’s voice but not Rob’s. The opera techniques he used in this made his voice sound very different from what we’re used to in his Home Free performances because the techniques are so different.
