Sustainable, vegan, cruelty-free leather? Yes, it exists!

Sustainable, cruelty-free vegan leather that's also compostable has been a pipe dream for long. But one company from Kerala is changing that. Based in Kochi, Malai Biomaterials uses a bacterial-cellulose growth process to create a leather-like biomaterial from coconut water! Founded by Susmith CS and Zuzana Gombosova, the startup uses Coconut water and natural fibres to create sheets of material 'Malai'. This process takes 3-4 weeks. They use natural dyes to keep the entire process environment-friendly.
