This has given me an idea for a story like this:
So, start with a zombie apocalypse, obviously. And show how the zombies have no intelligence, but have some cognition (they can go up stairs, use spear-like weapons, have a small bit of ingenuity in a fight, etc.) So the zombie-ness is caused by a parasite that attaches itself to the brain stem to control the host. The zombies are normal zombies, no humanity. BUT, if the parasite is damaged, then it only effects the chemical output in the brain, it doesn't control the actual neurons. So these rare zombies with damaged parasites have some humanity, (characterized by only eating people who have already been killed, panicking and fleeing in moments of danger, and using every opportunity to try and prove/show to humans that they are different, etc) so things like what's shown here can really happen. And humans are starting to take notice, so they find this out. And because of the way the parasite works, there is no way to make a cure/antidote. But, they figure out a way to easily damage the parasite so that the zombies act human. And zombies can't reproduce sexually, so while everyone lives somewhat normal lives with them, we are just in a waiting game until they all die of old age, and then boom; no more zombies.
